Review of AppleScript in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (Nutshell Handbook) (Paperback)

This book is somewhat out of date, first of all; it covers only a fairly old version of OS X, doesn't mention AppleScript Studio at all, etc. This is somewhat understandable, and it is at least much more up-to-date than Danny Goodman's book.
But the writing -- my god!It has the feel of a book that was written in one draft and never edited.Every single page of the book (and I just finished reading it cover to cover) had errors, typos, bugs, and poorly worded or unclear passages. In many cases I re-read sections several times and was simply unable to decipher what they were trying to say at all.I am a very experienced programmer (worked at Apple for several years, in fact), and I couldn't make head or tail of some of the passages in the book. There are huge omissions (I can find no explicit description of what "get" does, for example, anywhere in the reference section of the book). Many subtle (but important) details are glossed over completely.
Just pathetic that this is the best book available on AppleScript.I wish I could get my money back, on this and on Danny Goodman's book.I give it two stars instead of one because at least it is reasonably up to date and occasionally helpful.

Review of Truth in Grading: Troubling Issues with Learning Assessment (Paperback)

I admire anyone who can take an educational issue like grading and make it interesting. That is exactly what these authors have done. From the philosphy behind grades to the practical implementation of different grading systems, they cover it. How to avoid (or at least minimize) the pitfalls that accompany each type of system is addressed as well. One look at the chapter where they instruct you to figure out a set of "mock grades" by hand (without your trusty computer), and you'll be wondering how you didn't notice all of the subtleties of grading before. I believe that this book is a must-read for teachers.

Product Description
In the past decade, an unprecedented trend toward accountability has emerged in American public education. With the advent of computerized grading, stakeholders often have instant access to student grades. Consequently, teacher grading practices are under intense scrutiny. Since 2004, Truth in Grading has been helping schools avoid problems and potentially serious consequences that can result from flawed or careless assessment practices. A practical guide, Truth in Grading assists educators in developing and improving learning assessment practices.

"As our state moves forward with the implementation of rigorous, standards-based curriculum, it is critical that a discussion of the purpose and process of grading and assessment take place. Truth in Grading provided the catalyst for our conversation in Paulding County."

-Trudy Sowar, Superintendent, Paulding County School District, Georgia

"Truth in Grading is a great professional tool for any staff ready to examine the teaching profession's dark little secrets with regard to ineffective or inaccurate grading practices. It masterfully examines this issue from both teacher and administrator points-of-view. Common problems with current practice are clearly outlined, and the foundation for teachers and administrators to create their own applicable solutions are provided."

-Susan M. White, Principal, Cedar Hill Elementary, Gwinnett County, Georgia

"With competition for slots in American universities increasing, the examination of how to evaluate student effort and work should be thoughtfully reconsidered by every teacher. As a veteran teacher, I found that Truth in Grading presented excellent questions and ideas to be pondered. Since educators are about teaching, learning, and what is best for students, this topic deserves a more careful examination. For those who want to ensure fair and accurate evaluations for every student, Truth in Grading is a must read!"

-Michael Cheatham, Middle School Teacher

From the Publisher
Truth in Grading is a practical guide that helps teachers to develop a philosophy of grades and grading so as to better assess their students' learning in today's era of high-stakes accountability.

Review of Managing NFS and NIS (Paperback)

Hello, My name is Mike Eisler, and I am one of the
co-authors of Managing NFS and NIS, Second Edition.
I'm writing this note to offer additional information
to potential readers.

At the time I submitted this note, most of the
customer reviews for this book referred to the first edition.
One of the reviews states that the book is focused on NFS
version 2 over UDP and the old style automounter.
Actually, you'll find the second edition of our book
is more modern. New topics in the second edition
include NFS version 3, NFS over TCP, modern autofs-based
automounters, Kerberos V5 authentication for NFS, NFS Access
Control Lists (ACLs), and client side fail over.

Another difference is that first edition of this book
used SunOS 4.x as a reference for examples. The second
edition uses Solaris 8.

The second edition provides information you won't find
in NFS product documentation, such as using tools like ethereal
to debug NFS problems. This book will give you the benefit of
insights from people who probably wrote some of the code for
your clients and servers. You may find (and I hope) that
it will save you the trouble reporting a problem to
your vendor's customer support line.

Thank you for considering our book.

Review of Effective awk Programming (3rd Edition) (Paperback)

Awk is one of those handy Unix tools with which you can easily impress people. Using a simple

/pattern/ { action }

syntax, you can construct powerful one-liners. Do you want to how much time in total you spent surfing the Internet? Here it is:

awk '/Connect time/ { s += $8 } END { print s }' /var/log/messages

It doesn't get much shorter in any other programming language, does it? Need to strip text of HTML tags? Need a frequency count of words in a text? Awk is the perfect tool for tasks like this. With its pattern-action structure, powerful regular expression mechanism, associative arrays and basic program flow control, it provides a powerful tool for manipulating flat text files. Even though other scripting languages may be richer in features, there exists a niche where Awk is just the right tool to do the job.

Arnold Robbins, the author of this book as well as of several other books on Awk, serves also as the maintainer of GNU Awk (gawk for short), the most influential version of Awk available today. With the version 3.10, released in 2001, GNU Awk became richer for a handful of new extensions over traditional Awk, most important among them are the TCP/IP networking and the support for internationalization. All new extensions are described in the book. How successful these new extensions will be is doubtful, however. Networking scripting niche is already well covered with Perl and Python, and internationalization doesn't really matter much in short throw-away scripts Awk is usually used for.

With all due respect to the creators of Awk and their book (Alfred V. Aho, Peter J. Weinberger, Brian W. Kernighan, The Awk Programming Language, Addison-Wesley, 1988), I have to say that "Effective Awk Programming" is probably the best Awk tutorial on the market today. If you are serious about learning Awk, you shouldn't be without it. If you are still hesitating whether it wouldn't be wiser investing those 28 USD elsewhere, here is chance to read it before you buy it: install GNU Awk 3.10, and the Texinfo source of the book comes with it. But sooner or later you will find O'Reilly RepKover binding too tempting...

Review of Great Demo!: How To Create And Execute Stunning Software Demonstrations (Paperback)

In Great Demo, Peter Cohan applies his own methodology for how to give a demo in how he writes a business book.Even though the book is nearly 300 pages, it gets directly to the main premise.Show your prospect the best part, the most valuable aspect, of your product right at the front of your demo.Cohan does this with the book as well by giving us the "punch line" on page 5, not page 205.Just after the Introduction, the author gives us the "answer" to effective software demonstrations - "Do The Last Thing First."Show them that part of the killer demo that's meant to knock their socks off; that part traditionally following the grand build up like a symphony musical.Just skip the prelude, build up and all that other stuff and show the customer what they really want to see. Then you have their attention to fill in the details because you've proven (hopefully) up front that you are relevant and worth their time.It is interesting to observe how many proven advertising schemes already have this grab `em-up-front tactic built in.This can be seen in some television and magazine ads, most trade show tables, and yes even SPAM.Great Demo addresses this human need for immediate resolution - why is this worth my time at all? - in the board room during demos.

With 250 more pages of regular content (not counting the Appendices, glossary, etc.) Great Demo has a lot more to say about knowing what the most relevant part of your system might be to show each individual client and how to deal with the inevitable questions, etc. But, the core of Great Demo is simple, memorable and effective.I have had the opportunity to give several demonstrations since reading Great Demo and I have found this up front approach really changes the dynamic with the prospect in a healthy way.I think it helps differentiate our company/products since competitors may not be leading off with their best foot forward so intentionally. There are also practical benefits since executive level prospects/audience members may be present only in the beginning of a demo but not the end.If the opposite is true you can always show the best stuff again (and may be asked to do so), but if that exec leaves the presentation early and you haven't shown your best stuff, they may never see it at all. Of course, the book is well aware of this and many other practical benefits.Cohan has a web site called DemoGurus so he has a good base of info in addition to his own extensive experience to build the Great Demo method upon.

Interestingly, the book develops as if it is following its own method by unfolding more and more answers about the method itself as the chapters progress (as if it were the product being demo'd). In the early going this can be a little slow to develop, but by the middle of the book, there is a wealth of knowledge being presented. The presentation of the entire book also has business appeal. The pages are short and most follow a checklist type format. This makes the content easy to locate and train/test others on.

In addition to the Do the Last Thing First tactic, Great Demo also emphasizes showing only those Specific Capabilities that are necessary to address the customer's problem. This second point is also extremely important, but unlike the Do the Last Thing First advice, it can be found in most contemporary software demo methods.Great Demo, like its rivals, is smart enough to know software products these days are just too deep or broad to show in their entirety, this would only frustrate the prospect.Great Demo is very good about combining up to date management insights with its own unique contributions. In fact, Great demo is partially based upon the best thinking from the field of personal performance such as Covey's 7 Habits, and Solution Selling from Bosworth.Bosworth's Solution Selling is recommended multiple times as an important supplement to Great Demo. These thought leaders inform Cohan's organization of the Great Demo method.A reading list at the end of the book has helpful comments on these books and others the author has found valuable.

As the chapters progress, practical topics such as preparing the sales setup, tech aspects of the demo and dealing with questions are discussed point by point. The preparation chapters (especially technical) receive a lot of pages and account for about a quarter of the book. Chapter 11 is about doing remote demos and is worth the price of the book because it clarifies some practical approaches to this increasingly common medium for demos. As many of us can attest by now, remote demos can be really tedious/ineffective. In a nutshell, you must make the remote demo interactive even though it seems like a poor medium for doing so.Chapter 11 tells you how to manage the remote demo so you can turn it into an advantage for everyone.

I've read/reviewed other books on giving software demos and I think the Great Demo method is the most up-to-date and down-on-the-street effective. If you want to differentiate your demos from the usual fare everyone is tired of, do it by making them Great Demos.

Product Description
Great Demo! provides sales and presales staff with a method to dramatically increase their success in closing business through substantially improved software demonstrations. It draws upon the experiences of thousands of demonstrations, both delivered and received from vendors and customers. The distinctive 'Do the Last Thing First' concept generates a 'Wow!' response from customers.

The Great Demo! method is presented simply and clearly, and is elaborated more fully in each successive chapter, providing a rich toolkit for software sales teams. Real-life anecdotes, examples, and axioms offer humorous and effective punctuation.

Updated with new best practices, tips and techniques, this second edition now includes a complete chapter on remote demonstrations-an area of increased activity and unique challenges. An additional chapter on managing evaluations (for fun and profit) extends the utility of the book to those in sales and management.

Great Demo! is a terrific read on an airplane or between customer visits. It offers a straightforward process for creating and delivering highly compelling software demonstrations, excellent advice, tips, and the occasional epiphany.

About the Author
Peter Cohan leverages twenty-five years of experience in selling and marketing business software and as a customer. The Great Demo! method comes directly from extensive firsthand experiences in developing and delivering software demonstrations, and in coaching others to achieve surprisingly high success rates with their sales and marketing demos.
