Review of SolidWorks For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

The book spends the first 52 out of 322 pages explaining to the reader how to establish and setup a SW session. It is not until page 81 that it addresses the Feature toolbar. There are a few areas in this book that provides sound engineering design principles for any user, using any 2D or 3D software package. The book is very disappointing with the lack of specific usefully information on using SW and sounds more like a marketing and sales pitch / tool for purchasing SW.

Chapter 10 informs the reader on 10 places to go, to learn SW.I wanted the book to do this!

The enclosed CD includes Case Studies, Customer testimonials and Sales and Marketing hoopla. The CD is totally worthless for someone who purchased the book to learn SW.If I wanted Sales literature, I would have obtained free literature through a VAR.

Review of AutoCAD 2007 and AutoCAD LT 2007 Bible (Paperback)

When the publisher calles this book 'Bible' he means it. 1200+ pages on how to use the software. The back of the book says that this book is intended for 'Beginner to Intermediate' users. To be sure there is an introductory chapter at the beginning of the book might be enough for a beginner to get started with AutoCAD. But I'd recommend starting somewhere else, like say a 'For Dummies' book.

This is more of a reference book for the user looking to do something that he hasn't done before. As such it is well designed:

First there are a series of chapters organized in a logical manner with headings that actually make sense. Then under the chapter headings there are sub headings that further identify common tasks.

Second the index at the back of the book is 40 pages long, filled with small type where hopefully you can find nearly every subject. By having so many entries there are multiple entries for what you might be looking for.

All in all, this is one of those books you keep nearby when you are using the software.

Product Description
Popular among both novice and experienced AutoCAD users, this comprehensive book begins with an overview of the basics of AutoCAD, such as creating drawings, using commands, and specifying coordinates. Coverage becomes more in-depth as each chapter builds off the previous one, with discussions of 2D and 3D drawing techniques, using layers, creating dimensions, 3D coordinates, and rendering. You?ll learn to customize commands and toolbars; program AutoCAD using AutoLISP and VBA; and review AutoCAD LT. A "Quick Start" will have beginners creating a CAD drawing on their first day. The accompanying CD-ROM provides before-and-after real-world drawings, bonus appendices, freeware and shareware programs, the book in searchable PDF format, and a 30-day trial version of AutoCAD software.

From the Back Cover
"The AutoCAD Bibleis an object lesson in good design, concise and helpful writing, and a near-genius level of organization ? Your book has been the single most significant factor in my successful mastering of a new skill-there is not a paragraph I would rewrite."
-Paul O'Kelly

Even Autodesk developers keep this book on hand!

Six previous editions of readers from novices to experienced pros can't be wrong. This popular and comprehensive reference is what you need to master the latest AutoCAD software. No features are left out. Each of the book's seven sections thoroughly focuses on key elements in a logical sequence, so you can find what you need, when you need it. Start drawing today with the one book you need to succeed at AutoCAD 2007.

Review of Designing Web-Based Training: How to Teach Anyone Anything Anywhere Anytime (Paperback)

note: I submitted my review yesterday and incorrectly put the publishers name instead or Horton in the review. I have corrected thaterror below

Excellent overview and covers the in depth considerations necessary for any successful WBT program

I do consulting in education on WBT and I am a Director of a WBT Consulting Certification Program and consequently usually do not have the time to write reviews. However, in this instance I had to take the time. Horton has done an excellent job of providing an overview of WBT and an in depth study of the instructional design related to a WBT program. He covers most of the issues you will be facing setting up WBT and his book should be on your shelf and one of the first that you read if you are just getting started in WBT or in need of further guidance in this area. He doesn't go into the practical development side of the how to do the graphics, programming, and Web architecture, but that is OK because that is a separate area in itself. If you need to know most of the considerations involved with WBT, then this is definitely your book. After you have read his book sit down and use his suggestions to plan your WBT program and you will not go wrong. He also addresses very practical issues in the instructional design of the WBT program and the courses within the program, how to set them up and conduct them.I can't say enough about how well he covers these topics. If you need a book that will give you ideas and make you think about your WBT program and the instructional design and development within your upcoming or current WBT program, his book will do all of that and more. His book will definitely make you think and will provide insightful assistance for WBT program managers, WBT instructional designers, WBT course development teams and WBT instructors alike. I particularly liked the instructional design of his book; it is full of illustrations that are as thought provoking as his words. The book is truly an idea generator. It is an easy read for a newcomer and a must read for the WBT professional.

Product Description

Packed with over 100 examples, this well-illustrated guide walks you through every phase of designing WBT, from analyzing your course requirements and assessing the needs of potential students to designing a course for a global audience.

You'll find out how to combine elements into effective and interesting learning sequences, discover how to overcome any technical hurdle that may arise, how to offer materials that motivate learning, and how to use Web technologies to create 21st-century alternatives to traditional courses.

Praise for Designing Web-Based Training

"Horton has done it again! He's addressed the cutting-edge problem of Web-based training design with his pragmatic, research-based approach. His work is task-oriented and down-to-earth. He doesn't waste our time with excessive educational philosophy. In short-comprehensive overview, practical advice, engaging presentation."-Robert E. Horn, Author, Visual Language: Global Communication for the 21st Century

"As each new media wave is adopted for instructional pur-poses, there is a lag in effective exploitation of the unique features the medium brings for supporting learning. Designing Web-Based Training bridges the gap by providing a rich and detailed reference."-Ruth Clark, EdD, President, Clark Training & Consulting

"Designers have been seeking guidance on how to exploit the Web's distribution potential while combining it with powerful instructional programs. Horton provides structure, stimulation, and substance in this important book. Web-based training is definitely what is happening now. Designing Web-Based Training will be a de facto classic in the field.* Design guidelines

Review of AutoCAD 2008 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computers)) (Paperback)

Since deciding to become a CAD goddess, I've found reviews for 2008 CAD books in short supply so here you go ...

CAD For Dummies is in all truth a book for beginners, more experienced users may be able to profit by the tidbits that refer to new features in this year's release and tricks but since I'm a beginner and I've found it all easy enough to understand, I don't expect it will be much more that a pleasure read for CAD veterans.

With this book you can expect to become familiar with AutoCAD 2008. You will get comfortable with it, you'll know what the buttons are for, what the tools do and what the program's overall capabilities are. In other words, you'll be proficient. Not a grasshopper anymore but not quite a master. It prepares you to tackle more specialized books in whatever field (architectural, electrical, mechanical, 3d, etc) you're interested in with a great set of honed skills and a reasonable amount of confidence. It's an excellent foundation on which to build.

A couple of other things I'd like to mention are the awesome icons that can be found throughout the book, they serve to point out crucial information that you shouldn't forget, useful techie stuff, tips to make your AutoCAD life easier and how to avoid horrible-pull-your-hair-out-in-desperation-mistakes. Lastly, there are really no exercises, I'm a hands on kind of chick, I wanted to be drawing right away. So my solution to this was to buy another book to supplement this deficency and I'm happy to say that AutoCAD 2008: No Experience Required is as well in the awesome side. I'll be reviewing it soon.

Now, CAD For Dummies is not a CAD Bible (thank goodness), it doesn't tell you everything and at times it refers you to AutoCAD's Help features (very convenient). In my experience "Bible" books are more in the nature of a very overwhelming, unreadable, unliftable reference tool. And they don't tell you what you need to know as a beginner, they are manuals to a program.
