Sales Proposals Kit for Dummies is not only effective, it is an excellent read.So many books on sales techniques are so dry and virtually unreadable, but Mr. Kantin's witty style and real world examples of proposal design have had an impact on the quality of my proposals and my philosophy of sales in general.I found the proposal RATER particularly useful, as it pinpointed the areas that I needed too focus on in my proposals.My only regret is that Mr. Kantin did not write this book three

years ago. It would have saved me a lot of pain and rejection.Since I've read the book, only a few weeks ago, I'm three for three.This book is a must read for anybody who writes more than the occasional proposal.

Review of Nonprofit Kit for Dummies (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)

OK this book makes you feel like incorporating is as easy as bying the book ...

But it is way too vague, and omits to tell you what you get yourself into !

After reading this book, I incorporated and for additional info I bought Nolo's How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation in California by Anthony Mancuso (or How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation if you don't live in california) and I got really scared.
This nonprofit kit is really for dummies, it doesn't even talk about applying for state tax exemption which is as important as federal tax exemption, or your responsibilities and duties as a director or officer.

I would really advise you to buy Nolo's book (nolo.com). The author is much more responsible, he clearly tells you that you should prepare your bylaws, your federal and state tax exemption application BEFORE submitting you articles of incorporation ...

Plus, this nonprofit kit for dummies is making some huge mistakes! It tells you that the Board of Directors is composed of the president, vice president, secretary and CFO ... which is totally untrue, they are officers

Review of PHP and MySQL for Dummies with CDROM (Paperback)

I found PHP & MySQL for DUMMIES by Janet Valade to be an extremely useful starting place for practicing those tools, and if your circumstances and needs are similar to mine, then you may find it helpful as well. I have a database that I want to serve on the web. I have some experience with relatively simple programming, including C, but I am not a programmer per se. At my work, I have access to a web-server running both MySQL and PHP and an administrator to make sure that they are working. I am also someone who likes to do things themselves so that the result matches precisely what is in my head. All that this dummy needed was an introductory lesson on the syntax and structure of these two "languages" and Valade provided it.

MySQL & PHP for DUMMIES uses the example of setting up an online catalog for a pet store, demonstrating how to build a multi-table database in MySQL that employs the various necessary components, e.g. user login, querying and formatting the output. The computer operations covered are simple enough to just read on the train (i.e., I didn't need to be seated at my computer running the exercises to understand them) and provide a good primer for the kinds of that I could do... that YOU could do too.

Having praised the book for what it is, I want to make clear what it is not. The index is almost useless and the functions of both MySQL and PHP are covered in only the most superficial way, so this For DUMMIES book is a poor reference for projects beyond the advanced beginner; it does not necessarily replace more comprehensive texts. For my own rudimentary dabblings in web databases, I now rely more upon the PHP and MySQL code I have already written based on what this book taught me than the book itself. But, MySQL and PHP for DUMMIES provided the framework for me to take the first baby steps towards a really flexible web-based database.

Review of Windows 2000 Administration for Dummies (Paperback)

Having worked as a systems administrator for a Windows NT (as well as Unix and Linux) network(s), I found this book to be completely silly, and of hardly any real use whatsoever. Bellmo's attempt at providing an intelligent and useful guide to the implementation of a W2K server and network is no better than a Public Relations blurb for Microsoft. He relies on a number of unsupported assumptions about the superiority of W2K without actually discussing (or demonstrating) how this latest version from the Microsoft family is better than the previous one. He wastes valuable time praising the new "bells and whistles" W2K has to offer, when he should have spent more time and energy explaining (and showing) how W2k might make your LAN more reliable and less costly. This book, like so many others, is mostly just technical hype.

Doing Active Directory right was important to my small technology company, so I bought more than ten books on Active Directory, Windows 2000 Server, and DNS. This Dummies book I took home and planned to skim through itfirst, thinking it would be a nice quick introduction.

The book gotmislaid, and I did not pick it up again until I was nicely up to speed withActive Directory and had done several installations. I read it anyway on aSaturday night as a quick review and was surprised at the clear style, niceorganization, and adequacy of its coverage of the subject matter.

Don't be fooled by the title "for Dummies".This book includes everything you need to know about creating your own Web page with all the knowledge and software you'll need.You will need to invest some time in this project - but it is worth every minute!It's a simple, step by step process and you will need to take it slow if you're an average creator.

First you'll learn all about Web Publishing Basics, Website strategies and just enough HTML to get started (it's not that hard!).Besides creating your first Web page, you'll learn how to get the darn thing published on the WWW!That's half the battle, but worth the effort!There's lots of information on what to avoid (before you go there) and what makes the best Web page.Before you know it, you'll be upgrading your Web page all the time.You'll never get bored updating and changing your page until it's just perfect!

The book includes an invaluable CD that is useful for Windows and MAC!It contains Microsft Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, Dreamweaver (great design tool!), Frontpage Express, HTML conversion tools for Word (nice short-cut), BBEDIT, GraphicConverter (MAC), Homesite HTML Editor (MAC), Hotdog Express (for Windows - great tool!), SiteCheck utility, an Internet service provider software (if you don't already have one - most likely you have a sufficient one), HTMLValidator (catches errors), WEB Wizard (a nifty quick-and-dirty page maker), Reptile (for making cool backgrounds) and Paint Shop Pro, which is my favorite tool.There's plenty of other stuff too that I just can't get into detail here.

Once again, this does take a little bit of effort, but of all the books I have perused, this one seemed to be the best value for the money.It's all here and updated annually.It is worth every penny.Get your Web site up and running in less than a weekend (even though the book says one day).You'll feel smart when you're done!Enjoy!

Review of ASP.NET for Dummies (Paperback)

In its 420 printed pages, ASP.NET for Dummies covers the key topics to get you up and running with ASP.NET. You learn the basics of obtaining and displaying information on your sites. You learn how to use built-in functions such as date routines, math routines, and browser routines. You even learn how to work with data and databases on the server. This includes coverage of Active Data Objects (ADO) - a key way of doing database access. Building ASP.NET Web forms is covered in detail along with using server side controls ranging from radio buttons to drop down lists. Programming topics such as arrays, array lists, and hash tables are also explained as well as shown in examples.

While ASP.NET for Dummies is "for Dummies," you should already be familiar with programming concepts. As with most Active Server Page-related books, ASP.NET for Dummies uses Visual Basic .NET as its choice of programming languages. If you don't know Visual Basic .NET, don't fret. The book spends several chapters teaching the basics of what you need to know in order to program for ASP.NET. If you have never programmed before, you will most likely find that this moves too fast. However, if you know a scripting language such as JavaScript or VBScript you should have no trouble keeping up with the coverage of Visual Basic .NET in this book.

It is worth pointing out that this book doesn't stop at just covering the creation of ASP.NET pages, but it also covers creating full-fledge ASP.NET applications. The book presents a couple of ASP.NET applications that are larger and more practical than standard book examples. Within the text of the book a chat room and a classified application are both included. On the CD there is also a guest book application. Code for all three applications is on the CD.

The CD with this book is worth noting. Most ASP.NET books don't include a CD, let alone a CD with lots of useful stuff. This CD has five bonus chapters containing over a hundred additional pages. It also contains the author's source code so you don't have to hunt it down on the Web. A number of third party software products are also included. Some of these you may not find useful. Others such as the editors you may find extremely valuable.

Will ASP.NET for Dummies make you an expert ASP.NET developer? The answer is no, it won't make you an expert, however, no beginning level ASP.NET book will. What ASP.NET for Dummies will do is get you up and running with the foundational topics necessary for creating real-world ASP.NET pages. Once you are done with this book, you'll be able to create a wide variety of ASP.NET pages. If you are going to create professional-level pages, you will want to follow this book up with an intermediate advanced book.

In summary, if you have a little programming background, then you should be ready for ASP.NET. If you want a book that teaches you the basics of implementing ASP.NET in a relatively straightforward manner, then ASP.NET for Dummies accomplishes the task. With a price of only (...) including a CD containing valuable content, I have to give this book five stars. It is definitely worth the cost. In fact, I would say this book is under-priced (...) --which seems unusual for a computer book these days! If you can get a copy of this book at a discount, then this book is a steal!

Chapter 10 informs the reader on 10 places to go, to learn SW.I wanted the book to do this!

The enclosed CD includes Case Studies, Customer testimonials and Sales and Marketing hoopla.The CD is totally worthless for someone who purchased the book to learn SW.If I wanted Sales literature, I would have obtained free literature through a VAR.

For a few years now, I have wanted to learn how to program in JAVA.I bought books on JAVA but always hit road blocks along the way (because the author assumed I already knew something) that unmotivated me.In Java 2 for Dummies, Barry Burd has written a step-by-step book that could teach a near computer illiterate how to program in JAVA.He even includes directions to setting up the computer for convenience while programming.Explanations make the reader feel as though s/he is in a conversation with the author himself.I did not imagine that learning a programming language could be so easy.

Internet Marketing for Dummies Internet Marketing for Dummies is a must read book for any small business person new to online marketing. There's a lot of hype about marketing on the Internet, but the book's authors Frank Catalano and Bud Smith - do not hype your expectations. I knew that Internet Marketing for Dummies was not going to be another "let down" when I noticed that the authors included many of the online marketing resources that I frequent on a daily basis! Catalano and Smith begin their book by explaining that "Internet marketing" is "marketing" but using the Internet - and this is very important to understand. So many businesses want to rush into "online marketing", but don't have any clue about how even to market at all. The fundamentals of marketing, apply online as well as off line. Internet Marketing for Dummies walks the user through a fast over view of the Internet - explaining what AOl is, as compared to full access to the Internet. This chapter is very helpful for the many small businesses that are really not so sure what the Internet is all about. Chapter 2 and 3 of Internet Marketing for Dummies realy lays in to the nitty gritty of marketing, with a consentration in chapter two on developing an "Internet Marketing Plan" I was very impressed that the authors of this book took a whole chapter to also discuss and help the reader decide their domain name. Your business name, may indeed be "Faulkner, Grade and Berkmenstein" - however, you may wan to try out "greatlawyers.com" for a domain name! There's a lot of gems in Internet Marketing for Dummies , such as a nice section on effectively using email as a marketing tool. On page 155, chapter 8, Internet Marketing for Dummies lists "techniques for gathering visitor information" on your Web site. See, Internet marketing is more than "just" Internet marketing, but its a blend of leveraging your own Web site, reaching out to others, adveritising on Web sites, building an email list and etc. Internet Marketing for Dummies is one of those books you just keep as a guide on your desk and refer to daily. After you've launched some successful online marketing campaigns you'll be a pro and can then refine what you've learned in Internet Marketing for Dummies.

Review of Network+ Certification for Dummies (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)

I read this book from cover to cover as my main learning aid for Network+ certification. I passed on my first try with a score of 85%. The author did a great job in the format of the book, chapters are short and point out theimportant stuff. He pounds the information into your head by summarizing itbefore going into the detail, and throughout the book he goes over theimportant stuff again. The end of chapter exams are great as well as theend of book exam. The practice tests on the CD are worth the money alone. Idid find some errors but that just helped me to understand those particularareas better. Besides, try to find a book without errors, you won't. GreatBook! Highly Reccomend!

Review of Mac OS X Tiger For Dummies (Paperback)

Once again, the "for Dummies" series has come to the rescue of newbies and others who just want to learn more about their Macs.I am not a newbie.I've owned Macs for well over a decade. Even so, "Tiger for Dummies" had some great tidbits of knowledge that I was reading and learning for the first time.I always enjoy reading articles and books by "Dr. Mac" Bob Levitus, too.His style is easy-going and helpful, and he doesn't assume you know more than you likely do.

The true test of a "Dummies" book, however, is how much it helps someone unfamiliar with the Mac become a more efficient and better-informed user.The book is broken down into a number of tasks, and then walks the reader through a task step by step.Playful icons guide the reader through the task, warn of potential pitfalls, clarify matters, and direct the reader to additional software or resources that may be helpful.

"Mac OS X Tiger for Dummies" will help you configure a printer, get on the internet, use cool new internet services, get the most out of the included software on your Mac, and navigate the system preferences, explaining in detail (but not too much detail to bore you) many of the customization options your Mac has available.You will learn about Spotlight and how to find anything on your Mac exceptionally quickly.You will learn about downloading and installing Widgets to complement the ones Apple provides in the default Dashboard. Dr. Mac will also explain to you the Finder and the metaphors common to the Macintosh experience (concepts such as documents, the desktop, folders, windows, icons and menus).You will get a good education on removable media, disk images, downloading things from the internet, backing up your files, and even a couple chapters on networking.

In reviewing this book, I loaned it to a couple brand new Mac users; they now own their own copies, which they purchased after enjoying my copy for a brief time.They said that "Tiger for Dummies" is a great book and helps them acclimate to the Mac, especially helping them overcome some common hang-ups or sources of confusion encountered by switchers from Windows.

My only gripe: too many bad jokes.Not enough to dock it any moose in the 5 out of 5 moose rating that I am giving it, but suffice it to say that after 400 pages, the jokes wear thin.Less jokes, more content, would be my desire for the next version.I enjoy Dr. Mac's humor, generally, but like anything else, it's best taken in moderation.

I recommend "Tiger for Dummies" to any Mac user, but especially to new users or as a gift for new Mac users in your life.Pick up a couple copies for the Mac users on your gift list!

Pros: Easy to read, well-illustrated, another fine Dummies book
Cons: Too many bad jokes.

I've worked in the customer support field now for seven years and I consider myself somewhat of an expert in the field.I bought this book because I thought that I could use a few suggestions or reminders to helpme hone my skills.What I found was a goldmine.

When I first started inCustomer Service I dealt pricipally on the phone speaking to customers. That has changed and now I deal mainly via e-mail.The reason this bookwas so great for me is that it contains three chapters that deal withnothing but e-mail.

I have recommended this book to all of my co-workersand my manager is going to provide the entire department with complementarycopies because it is such a great resource.He has read it too.

I wishthat I could describe in detail each and every reason that you should buythis book, but I would probably end up writing a book myself.

Whetheryou're an old pro, like me, or a beginner, this book has something for you.

Review of PHP & MySQL For Dummies 3rd edition (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) (Paperback)

I just finished PHP and MySQL for Dummies last night. I took C++ about 7 years ago in highschool and I think that helped with following the PHP part. Here are the pros and cons I found.
Cons
1.Not enough info on PHP and Mysql setup. One of the reasons I picked up this book was for help in getting everything configured. I had tried numerous how-tos on the web that weren't working, this did not offer much help either, although you can email the author for additional support. Solution: save the headache and download WAMP5, everything is configured for u with php, mysql, and apache server.
2. I found it annoying that the author would throw in lots of functions that were not included in the chapter into her example programs. Sure, they're there (some of them) in the last chapter, but they are not referenced so some of the examples are hard to proof unless you change them or read ahead.
3. Read the chapter "PHP Gotchas" at the beginning of the php chapters intead of at the end. If you follow along in order you will already know everything in that chapter, with much frustration, by the time u get there.
Pros:
I now know how to design a fully functional web program and have already figured out in my head how to do 2 others, plus modifications to the sample programs.
This is not the last PHP/MySQL book you will buy but it's good to get your feet wet.

Review of C++ for Dummies (Paperback)

I've been looking for just the right introduction to programming for some time. I've spent more than a dozen hours combing through the shelves in my local Borders and B&N, skimming over 50 so-called"introductory" texts, looking for one that I could really learnfrom. By way of background, I am an advanced computer user/tinkerer, butI'm completely inexperienced in the field of programming -- never so muchas typed a lick of code.

In reviewing other books, I didn't want to startwith a book about C, because conventional wisdom says that it's a bad ideato start with C (a procedural language) if you plan to use it to jumpstarta study of C++ or java (hybrid OOP languages). I also didn't want to startwith a book on QBasic, because it seems to me that the language is prettymuch obsolete. For me, I wanted to learn OOP, and that meant a commitmentto C++ and/or java (preferably both, as each has its strengths andweaknesses, and they are similar and popular enough to studytogether).

That said, I looked at somewhat advanced introductory books byDeitel, Savitch, and Horton, all of which are extremely well-reviewed hereon Amazon. I also looked at several books from Microsoft Press, as Iplanned on learning by using components of the Visual Studio. Horton'sBeginning C++ came close, but its massive size and more advanced approachleft me looking for a different introductory text (I plan on returning toHorton's book though, to supplement what I learn from Mr. Davis'book).

Finally, this new edition of C++ for Dummies came out just intime. This book really hits the mark on many levels: (1) it assumes noknowledge of programming; (2) it does a great job of explaining trulycomplex topics without going overboard or hitting you over the head; (3) itis clear and entertaining; and (4) it is new and compliant with the lateststandards, which is more than I can say for books written, say, pre-1998.

Do yourself a favor -- if you have no programming experience and want tolearn a cutting edge OOP language like C++ or java, start here, then usethat knowledge to branch out to more advanced material. Personally, I'msupplementing this reading with Horton's Beginning C++ and Beginning Java 2(JDK 1.3 Version), and Bruce Eckel's highly praised Thinking inJava.

I found Final Cut Express 4 for Dummies to clarify a lot of technical information that I was trying to understand in Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Express 4. When reading for Dummies, I had no trouble understanding it and was able to compete a production easily on Final Cut Express 4. It talks plain, layman's language. I love it.
