Review of PHP Professional Projects (Paperback)

This book was a great disappointment! I am building a large application in PHP and was looking for some good project planning strategies and patterns. Instead I found the usual shopping cart examples written as if for a small scale project. The code snippets are full of white space and a few lines of code takes up an entire page, hence it is hard to follow. What little code I did try was full of errors and bad syntax. This book does not have a CD with it so you must type in all the code that you may want to start with. I suggest the book 'Web Applications Development with PHP 4.0' for your true professional projects.

Product Description
This book provides a hands-on approach to learning PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, which is a server-side scripting language. The book is aimed at both novice as well as advance level readers. Readers might only have the basic knowledge of HTML or might already know Web-based programming. The readers will use the PHP concepts that they learn in the book to create professional projects.

The book starts with a few overview chapters that cover the key concepts of Web-based programming. These chapters act as an information store for programmers who may need to brush up their prior programming knowledge. A major part of the book revolves around professional projects. These projects enable programmers to learn about various tasks by following a simple to complex approach. Each project covers a specific subject area and guides the readers by using practical scenarios. The projects range from a simple project that involves creating plain data entry Web pages using HTML and saving the information in a text file. Then the books moves to complex projects that involve creating Web pages containing PHP scripts and storing information in MySQL databases. These projects help programmers to accomplish their goals by understanding the practical and real-life application of PHP in Web page designing. Each project in the book is a guide for the reader to create a part of a large Web site.

Apart from the overview chapters and the professional projects, this book also includes two additional sections, Beyond the Lab and Appendices. The Beyond the Lab section serves as both a summary of what the reader has learned throughout the projects and as a road map for where the reader can go to expand on this knowledge. This section also covers the future direction of the programming language. The Appendices act as a quick reference for PHP functions and certain concepts that a reader might want to explore further.

Use PHP to accomplish real-world, professional tasks.

Incorporating five hands-on projects, PHP Professional Projects is your key to unlocking the power of PHP. Each project focuses on a specific PHP concept and is based on a real-world situation. You will be able to use the skills that you develop throughout the book to modify the projects as needed to fit your professional needs.

Review of Online Investing Bible (Bible (Wiley)) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

This fine (and fat) book is just the thing for people who currently trade online or those who are considering it. It provides a nice assortment of screen shots of useful sites to become familiar with and concludes each chapter with a concise summary in list format. The book is 823 pages long but still doesn't go far enough on specialist topics. But this book is a comprehensive and carefully constructed primer on the entire waterfront from Stocks to Bonds to Mutual Funds and of course to the particulars and precautions of setting up an account, making trades, gathering timely information etc. I like that it doesn't take an AOL-centric point of view because that would be too limiting. If you are interested in Online Investing, buy this book and supplement it with a subscription to "Online Investing" magazine (monthly) which would bring you up to date on new developments and also cover special topics with more depth.

Review of Complete Guide to Internet Publicity: Creating and Launching Successful Online Campaigns (Paperback)

Steve O'Keefe's first book, Publicity on the Internet, changed the way people in public relations and marketing, particularly those in the publishing industry, publicized and promoted books, companies, products, services and other endeavors on the World Wide Web.For the first time, someone had outlined -- in great detail and with remarkable candor -- what we had to do to take advantage of the Internet's innumerable opportunities for getting "talked about" in cyberspace and, by extension, in our offices, living rooms and places of play.In his new book, Complete Guide to Internet Publicity -- a complete overhaul of his earlier work -- Steve goes several steps further and makes the art of Internet publicity almost a no-brainer for professionals and non-professionals alike. With a host of specific case examples, he tells us how to harness the power of online news rooms, discussion groups, newsletters, chat tours, online seminars, contests and what he calls "syndication" (a great concept unto itself) to develop positive publicity far beyond what most of us could achieve or afford with traditional public relations or direct mail marketing, as important and impressive as these approaches can be in certain circumstances. But the book is far more than a collection of tactics. Most important, it is salted with expert advice and counsel on how to use the Internet wisely.Steve is a practitioner of what he describes, but he is also a teacher who cares about the values of his readers. He wants us to succeed credibly and accountably with our publicity initiatives, not at all costs.Philosophically, he reverses the old maxim, "the end justifies the means."Like Camus, he thinks "the means justify the end."Still and all, the book is a wonderfully practical primer that helps us to concentrate on creativity and substance in generating the kind of publicity that we only dreamed of a few years back. The book is also well-organized, well-written and well-edited, three qualities that make it not only easy to read, but easy to grasp and easy to translate into action. If there is a "best" book on Internet publicity, this has to be the choice hands down.

I am a professional in the e-business thought leadership arena, and have searched high and low for a solid book on e-procurement.Neef's book has it all!!

It is well orginized, and backed up with solid data and research.Whether your an e-business professional or an executive looking to understand what B2B commerce and e-procurement can mean to your business, buy this book.

Product Description
e-Procurement is hot. And no wonder: companies are reporting that e-Procurement systems are saving them millions of dollars annually -- in some cases, billions. GE's Jack Welch claims that GE will save $10 billion dollars from e-procurement. Cisco Systems's John Chambers says it is Cisco's #1 priority. Now, there's a start-to-finish guide to implementing e-Procurement in any enterprise. Dale Neef covers it all -- from making the business case to architecting the solution, managing the risks to reaping the benefits. Neef begins with an up-to-the-minute overview of the promise of B2B e-procurement in supporting globalized, extended enterprises. He reviews the options for deploying e-Procurement, including internal solutions and e-Hubs; then identifies key issues associated with e-procurement in the enterprise. Learn how to make the business case for (or against) e-Procurement, and how to architect the optimal solution. You'll find detailed coverage of today's leading e-procurement technologies, including XML; and today's leading approaches, from ERP-based solutions to enterprise application integration.Neef covers the entire lifecycle of the e-Procurement initiative, identifying key pitfalls and areas of risk -- and proven solutions.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

Business people these days are becoming weary of new fads, movements, and revolutions, and rightly so. We have, in less than a decade, been taken through such "revolutionary" transformations as total quality management, business process reengineering, enterprise resource planning, activity-based costing, and retail e-commerce. Companies have downsized, outsourced, empowered employees, shifted processes and organizational structures from vertical to horizontal, completed strategic sourcing initiatives, and purchased IT systems (often on the basis of dubious return on investment), with investments amounting to millions of dollars. And, of course, they have paid management consultants and software companies many millions more for advice on implementation and change management.

Yet, completing business-to-business transactions over the Internet is genuinely something very different. The unexpected emergence of the Internet as a tool for business has meant that we have once again been thrown inescapably into the fray of major investment and change. As I have argued before1 it is all part of an accelerated pace of change that will bring about a fundamental restructuring for all industries, worldwide, and participation is essential for the survival in the new economy.

I have written this book about e-procurement in part because I believe that there has been a mistaken emphasis on e-commerce (electronic retailing) in our approach to the use of the Internet. Swayed by the activity around online retailing-the fortunes to be made with dotcom startups, the venture capital that was available, the relative ease in which a Web site for retail sales could be built, the massive coverage of the subject by the business press-we have failed to understand that e-commerce is a relatively unimportant step in the development of the Internet. It is a vital part of an overall e-business strategy, of course, but online retailing-unless it is fully integrated into the supply chain-is simply a mildly effective extension of the sales process. Moreover, expanding revenues, given the margins made in most industries, is far less effective as a strategy than is fundamentally and permanently reducing major costs-something that affects the bottom line directly.

The real value of the Internet, as many companies are beginning to experience first hand, comes instead from business-to-business, buyer-vendor transactions that include electronic procurement and full integration of the electronic supply chain from customer to supplier. In fact, as electronic procurement and supply chain software continue to evolve, the relative value to companies of online retailing will almost certainly continue to shrink in relation to the enormous cost savings and fundamental restructuring of companies that will come about as a result of the evolution of Internet-based business-to-business activity.

The purpose of this book is threefold. First, it is simply to explain to those who have not previously dealt with the area of procurement the fundamentals involved with purchasing and replenishing materials. Though certainly not as glamorous as many (in fact, most) areas of business, procurement-whether for everyday office supplies or for materials used directly in the manufacturing process-is nonetheless an enormous expense for companies, large and small, and in every industry. In fact, so enormous is the expense and potential savings that e-procurement should from this time forward be seen as an integral part of your company's overall e-business strategy. I hope that the book can therefore serve as a primer for introducing the importance of the subject to organizational leaders and for elevating the subject from the tactical to the strategic.

The second purpose of this book is to explore the phenomenon of the electronic trading communities-the volatile and fast-growing area of online e-markets, auctions, reverse auctions, and exchanges-that is effectively revolutionizing the relationship between buyers and sellers in virtually every industry, worldwide. A battle for control over the influence and utility of these online exchanges is now being waged between a powerful group of software companies, industry-leading alliances, and third-party application service providers in a volatile mix of competition and collaboration that is at once both explosive and effective, and that will eventually affect virtually every supplier and buyer in the economy.

And finally, this book is intended to help managers, executives, and other organizational leaders to take the first important steps necessary for defining and implementing their e-procurement and overall e-business strategies. I have therefore devoted several chapters to the development of strategy, to project approach and structure, and to the activities necessary to creating an effective plan of change management. As many have learned from past lessons with enterprise resource planning systems, business benefits come not only from the functionality of the software system, but often more importantly, from changes in the way employees do their work. Just as e-procurement should be seen as strategic rather than tactical, we should also avoid seeing it solely as a technical solution. After all, to be effective, the behavior of employees in the purchasing department (not to mention the behavior of those employees throughout the organization who today buy "off contract" with little concern for price or administrative overhead costs) will need to change dramatically. For this reason, I have dedicated several chapters specifically to "lessons learned" around project and change management, relating at a more detailed level some of the leading techniques that have worked well for successful companies and consultancies in the recent past. I hope these will be useful to the soon-to-be managers of enterprise-wide e-procurement initiatives.

I should, at the outset, admit that although the book examines the basic software platforms and major players in the e-procurement industry, the business-to-business e-procurement marketplace is extremely volatile. Software vendors merge, realign, and bring forward new offerings on an almost continuous basis. Electronic markets and auction sites are multiplying rapidly, while at the same time beginning to falter and collapse, as competitors vie for dominance. The models for e-procurement-enterprise-based, outsourced, or networked-are all in a state of evolution.

In short, it is a marketplace that is constantly changing and evolving, and therefore this book is by no means the last word on the subject. But the fundamental principles behind electronic procurement are sound and well understood, and it is critical for organizational leaders to understand these principles, the major players, the marketplace, and the key issues in order to be in a position to create an e-procurement strategy with confidence. E-procurement initiatives are seldom simple, compared with building a Web page, but their potential for cost savings are enormous, and few companies have the luxury of waiting for a much more settled marketplace before acting.

Review of Selling Online: How to Become a Successful E-Commerce Merchant [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I'm a firm believer that the best way to learn about doing something is to consult someone who's done it or to just start doing it yourself. This book really doesn't provide either of these things. The authors don't seem to have had too much success in the e-commerce world (or else choose not to share their expertise with readers in this simple book).

Selling Online is better than a lot of the other really, really bad "online commerce" books I've seen out there, but not by a lot really. The overwhelming majority of the information here could be found for free on the Web, as the book does little more than give very, very vague overviews of various aspects of e-commerce and then point the reader off to a series of vendor sites (many of which no longer exist, and which in any case are not very informative and try to take advantage of would-be Internet entrepreneurs).

Do yourself a favor, really. Buy books on HTML and CGI, and then get yourself a computer and fire up Google and search for information about setting up an online business (be specific so as to avoid lots of the scam companies... if there are flashy graphics and the word MILLIONS written all over the site... then leave quickly and avoid the pop-ups that will follow you!) Once you have the technical background to build a website the other technical details of running an online store will all fall into place.

Product Description
Whether your organization is large or small, Selling Online is a perfect resource for any employee or entrepreneur interested in building a successful, profitable, and sustainable online retail business.

In Selling Online, Carroll and Broadhead discuss what makes an online business fail or triumph. From the nuts and bolts of how to build a site to an in depth look at merchant accounts, a systematic business plan walks you through the complex issues of doing business over the Internet.

Review of ASP.NET for Dummies (Paperback)

In its 420 printed pages, ASP.NET for Dummies covers the key topics to get you up and running with ASP.NET. You learn the basics of obtaining and displaying information on your sites. You learn how to use built-in functions such as date routines, math routines, and browser routines. You even learn how to work with data and databases on the server. This includes coverage of Active Data Objects (ADO) - a key way of doing database access. Building ASP.NET Web forms is covered in detail along with using server side controls ranging from radio buttons to drop down lists. Programming topics such as arrays, array lists, and hash tables are also explained as well as shown in examples.

While ASP.NET for Dummies is "for Dummies," you should already be familiar with programming concepts. As with most Active Server Page-related books, ASP.NET for Dummies uses Visual Basic .NET as its choice of programming languages. If you don't know Visual Basic .NET, don't fret. The book spends several chapters teaching the basics of what you need to know in order to program for ASP.NET. If you have never programmed before, you will most likely find that this moves too fast. However, if you know a scripting language such as JavaScript or VBScript you should have no trouble keeping up with the coverage of Visual Basic .NET in this book.

It is worth pointing out that this book doesn't stop at just covering the creation of ASP.NET pages, but it also covers creating full-fledge ASP.NET applications. The book presents a couple of ASP.NET applications that are larger and more practical than standard book examples. Within the text of the book a chat room and a classified application are both included. On the CD there is also a guest book application. Code for all three applications is on the CD.

The CD with this book is worth noting. Most ASP.NET books don't include a CD, let alone a CD with lots of useful stuff. This CD has five bonus chapters containing over a hundred additional pages. It also contains the author's source code so you don't have to hunt it down on the Web. A number of third party software products are also included. Some of these you may not find useful. Others such as the editors you may find extremely valuable.

Will ASP.NET for Dummies make you an expert ASP.NET developer? The answer is no, it won't make you an expert, however, no beginning level ASP.NET book will. What ASP.NET for Dummies will do is get you up and running with the foundational topics necessary for creating real-world ASP.NET pages. Once you are done with this book, you'll be able to create a wide variety of ASP.NET pages. If you are going to create professional-level pages, you will want to follow this book up with an intermediate advanced book.

In summary, if you have a little programming background, then you should be ready for ASP.NET. If you want a book that teaches you the basics of implementing ASP.NET in a relatively straightforward manner, then ASP.NET for Dummies accomplishes the task. With a price of only (...) including a CD containing valuable content, I have to give this book five stars. It is definitely worth the cost. In fact, I would say this book is under-priced (...) --which seems unusual for a computer book these days! If you can get a copy of this book at a discount, then this book is a steal!

One final note, a number of excellent ASP sites are not mentioned in the book. This includesASP101.com. 15seconds.com, 4GuysFromRolla.com, ASPWire.com and more.

Review of Internet Marketing for Dummies [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

Internet Marketing for Dummies Internet Marketing for Dummies is a must read book for any small business person new to online marketing. There's a lot of hype about marketing on the Internet, but the book's authors Frank Catalano and Bud Smith - do not hype your expectations. I knew that Internet Marketing for Dummies was not going to be another "let down" when I noticed that the authors included many of the online marketing resources that I frequent on a daily basis! Catalano and Smith begin their book by explaining that "Internet marketing" is "marketing" but using the Internet - and this is very important to understand. So many businesses want to rush into "online marketing", but don't have any clue about how even to market at all. The fundamentals of marketing, apply online as well as off line. Internet Marketing for Dummies walks the user through a fast over view of the Internet - explaining what AOl is, as compared to full access to the Internet. This chapter is very helpful for the many small businesses that are really not so sure what the Internet is all about. Chapter 2 and 3 of Internet Marketing for Dummies realy lays in to the nitty gritty of marketing, with a consentration in chapter two on developing an "Internet Marketing Plan" I was very impressed that the authors of this book took a whole chapter to also discuss and help the reader decide their domain name. Your business name, may indeed be "Faulkner, Grade and Berkmenstein" - however, you may wan to try out "greatlawyers.com" for a domain name! There's a lot of gems in Internet Marketing for Dummies , such as a nice section on effectively using email as a marketing tool. On page 155, chapter 8, Internet Marketing for Dummies lists "techniques for gathering visitor information" on your Web site. See, Internet marketing is more than "just" Internet marketing, but its a blend of leveraging your own Web site, reaching out to others, adveritising on Web sites, building an email list and etc. Internet Marketing for Dummies is one of those books you just keep as a guide on your desk and refer to daily. After you've launched some successful online marketing campaigns you'll be a pro and can then refine what you've learned in Internet Marketing for Dummies.

Product Description
This update to Marketing Online For Dummies includes all of the great topics from the original book, plus an additional focus, Internet advertising, a very hot topic. The right Internet advertising campaign can cost very little and make a product launch or even a company a winner; the wrong approach can be a huge waste of time and effort. The authors have hands-on experience doing both guerrilla marketing and million-dollar deals in this critical area. Also covered in this edition is a quick-start guide to getting net-savvy, a survival requirement in the Web marketing world.

From the Author
Internet Marketing For Dummies is based on our first book together, Marketing Online For Dummies. IMFD walks novice online marketers through all the key steps in developing strategy and tactics. IMFD includes new chapters on Internet advertising and public relations, plus updated information on choosing the right domain name, effective e-mail marketing, marketing on your Web site, and how to develop just enough marketing strategy to ensure your tactical marketing efforts are successful and measurable.END

Review of PC Magazine Wireless Solutions (Paperback)

The target reader seems to be a Win-XP user with a D-Link DI-624, who does not really want to learn much.If that is you, then this book may be fine for you.If you only want to run the wizards & menus & little else, great.I happen to use Win-XP on some machines, and have a D-Link DI-624 on one.But I actually was hoping to learn more, and this book disappointed me.I'm taking it back to Barnes & Noble.
The authors use acronyms(initials) but usually make you go to the index to find out what the initials stand for.Seldom is there an explanation of what it really means.Sometimes the acronyms/initials are not defined, and at least once, the initials were defined two ways at two points in the book (see MAC as medium access control on page 90 and media access control on page 123 & the index).
What I really disliked is the total omission of Linux, a bunch of the technologies & components involved in wireless, and a good explanation of the basics. This book omits way to much for me.The authors apparantly think readers do not need to understand wireless technology basics.I'm not looking for wireless network certification or employment, just good basic understanding and this book doesn't have it.It does have some good material for the newbie, and is not overly verbose, so 3 stars.

Product Description
Wireless is freedom. Wireless is now. And who better than PC Magazine to help you break free?

Wireless is more than cell phones. It's Web surfing from your deck, or tuning up your Xbox? to take on opponents on the opposite coast. But whatever wireless is, it isn't simple--or it wasn't, until these two guys made it so. Here's the straight scoop on setup, security, trouble-shooting, wireless capabilities, and a whole lot more. Plenty of books will tell you how to build a wireless network, but only this one offers proven solutions from PC Magazine.

No strings attached! Here's how to
* Share printers, files, Internet connections and more--all without wires
* Wirelessly connect your video, audio, and game consoles
* Connect and control wireless "smart home" devices
* Guard your Wi-Fi network against intruders withWEP and WPA encryption
* Surf from anywhere in your home or office
* Untether your employees for greater creativity and productivity
* Take your wireless world on the road
* Understand wireless standards and protocols
* Learn how to choose the right wireless equipment

A Taste of Honey

A honeypot litters the airwaves with simulated access points, inviting intruders to take advantage of the network but. . . offering them no-where to go. Instead of trying to hide your real AP. . . you put it out with fake APs, hiding (it) by giving the intruder too much to do.

Review of PHP & MySQL For Dummies 3rd edition (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) (Paperback)

I just finished PHP and MySQL for Dummies last night. I took C++ about 7 years ago in highschool and I think that helped with following the PHP part. Here are the pros and cons I found.
Cons
1.Not enough info on PHP and Mysql setup. One of the reasons I picked up this book was for help in getting everything configured. I had tried numerous how-tos on the web that weren't working, this did not offer much help either, although you can email the author for additional support. Solution: save the headache and download WAMP5, everything is configured for u with php, mysql, and apache server.
2. I found it annoying that the author would throw in lots of functions that were not included in the chapter into her example programs. Sure, they're there (some of them) in the last chapter, but they are not referenced so some of the examples are hard to proof unless you change them or read ahead.
3. Read the chapter "PHP Gotchas" at the beginning of the php chapters intead of at the end. If you follow along in order you will already know everything in that chapter, with much frustration, by the time u get there.
Pros:
I now know how to design a fully functional web program and have already figured out in my head how to do 2 others, plus modifications to the sample programs.
This is not the last PHP/MySQL book you will buy but it's good to get your feet wet.

Review of Instant Messaging Systems: Cracking the Code (Paperback)

I made the mistake of purchasing this book without thoroughly looking through it. I saw some of the code samples and it looked interesting. I was primarily drawn to it because of the use of Jabber, which is referred to prominently on the back cover and in the first chapter.

The actual book is pretty bad. As a previous reviewer stated, the editing is horrible. Many of the sentences make no sense and go back and forth through past and present tense.

The system that the authors built and describe in the book is not a Jabber solution. They built their own IM system based on web services and basically built an adapter to link up to a Jabber server. They offer no reasons why they do not implement a full Jabber server/client system. Their examples make no sense.

I highly recommend that you stay away from this book.

Product Description
* Complete instant messaging applications with design specifications, flow diagrams and source code with line-by-line explanation.
* Includes 2 different Jabber-compliant IM solutions - Java based and .NET based with C#.

Review of ePublishing for Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

The inevitability of more publications being distributed via eBook format is pretty well conceded by any expert familiar with the dollar and time benefits of ePublishing. How soon we start seeing titles in eBook format, which subjects they cover, and which format version becomes the accepted standard depends on how easily the issues are understood and the techniques for creating eBooks explained.
"ePublishing for Dummies" makes a major contribution in that advancement. The more publishers, technical writers, and budding authors read and apply the topics covered by this book, the sooner ePublishing will take off. ePublishing does not spell the end of paper books... it simply offers another delivery medium for published content - superior for many readers. Thank you Victoria for making writing and ePublishing approachable.
ePublishing is not for the faint at heart, it is still "early adopters" territory. But this book does provide credibility, easy-to-use instructions, information, and insight - and that's a start!

Product Description
Make your dream of writing and getting published a reality using this complete guide. The ePublishing explosion has caused everyone to ask questions about electronic book formats, how to eMarket their work and if they can create their own ePublishing business. This book will show you how to effectively package knowledge for the right audience, in the correct format, and the best way to market the resulting product. This book will showcase the most effective tools for authors and publishing entrepreneurs to build an internet-based publishing business, but will also benefit students who want to start a profitable part-time enterprise or a freelance writer searching for new projects.

Review of Macromedia Flash MX for Dummies (Paperback)

When Flash MX was released, I wanted to get myself up to speed as quickly as possible on how to use all the new features of this new version of Flash. The first book I bought-and the one I still refer to the most often-is Gurdy Leete and Ellen Finkelstein's "Flash MX for Dummies."

Flash is said to have a steep learning curve, and the pursuit of learning a little Flash to liven up one's website has been known to cause more than one otherwise sane and intelligent individual to pull out her hair in fits of frustration and despair. When I was first learning Flash, I purchased and studied a wide variety of thick (and expensive) tombs on the subject, and yet, in spite of hours of agonizing over code and techniques that I never could get to actually work, I finally discovered the clear writing of Gurdy Leete and Ellen Finkelstein. Within a week after purchasing and reading my first "Flash for Dummies" book, I created my very first movie in Flash, and I was thrilled with the end result.

"Flash MX for Dummies" contains just the right amount of clear, concise information, along with step-by-step instructions that will walk you through the creation of your first Flash movie. As you read through the book, you will feel that you have a pair of friendly and competent mentors at your side. The authors have a way of making even the most difficult concepts accessible. Their tone is warm and friendly, yet never condescending.

In addition to providing thorough coverage of the basics of learning Flash, the book also introduces a number of intermediate concepts such as using masks, importing sound and video into your Flash movie, and making use of templates. The chapter named "Getting Interactive" provides the reader with clear and easy instructions for accomplishing such advanced tasks as using the SetMask method to make a movie clip into a mask and dynamically loading music from the web. I also appreciated the section entitled, "Frequently Asked Questions" which provided crystal clear, step-by-step instructions for doing some fun things like creating a custom cursor and making "drag-and-drop" objects.

If all of this isn't enough, the book also comes with an accompanying CD that is packed with resources, including a library of vector graphics you can use in your movies, Flash movies that you can open in Flash and dissect in order to further your understanding of Flash, and even a whole library of sounds you can practice with, courtesy of SoundRangers.

Not only does this book provide you with top-notch instruction for learning Flash, but you won't have to pay an arm and a leg for it. The price of the book is less than half the price of many other books on the same subject.

The book is perfect for those just starting out in learning Flash. At the same time, it provides more experienced Flashers with a wealth of information, resources, and new ideas.I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in furthering herunderstanding of Flash. Buy the book. Then you, too, can be one happy dummy. : )

Review of Macromedia Studio MX 2004 Bible (Paperback)

The small non-profit company I work for needed a website, and I drew the short straw for designing and maintaining it.We bought the Studio MX suite, and I hoped this book would cover everything I needed to design a simple, yet cool website.

The thing is it DOES cover EVERYTHING I needed, but it is SO overwhelming in all the details, I was pulling my hair out and wondering what I'd gotten myself into.

You really have have some experience with website design before attempting this book.I had no idea what to do, and couldn't filter out what applied to me and what didn't; I needed a little more hand-holding than this book offered. Now that I've been through the H.O.T. and Naked series of help books (which others complain of being too basic), I'm much more comfortable with this book.I'll definitely be using it as a reference as I add dynamic content to the simple website I've built.

Overall, this book is an excellent resource for intermediate or advanced users.Beginners should shop around for other books before buying this one.
