There are many books on the market about increasing web traffic; I have read several of them. After completing significant research, I have found that this book is one of the best available. It breaks the process down into simple "bite size" tasks that the reader can complete over a few days - provided they have read ahead.

The information in this book has helped me drive significantly moretraffic to my website and to several of my colleagues' sites as well.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to increase their web presence.

Review of PHP Fast & Easy Web Development, 2nd Edition [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

This book is a very good starting point for anyone who wishes to begin programming in PHP.

I picked this book up in hopes of getting somewhat of a grasp of PHP. The book was very successful in presenting appropriate concepts for beginners such as: varibables, arrays and operators. The book also had a few chapters on using MySQL, which is very helpful for anyone who wishes to create full-blown web applications such as shopping carts, forums and news services on their websites.

However, the book was somewhat vague in the amount of content presented. The book is like a giant PHP coding tutorial, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you're not a beginner. For a complete introduction to PHP/MySQL I would suggest buying this book AND PHP/MySQL Web Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thompson. With these two books, a beginner will be on the right path down the complicated road of online applications.

"E-Tailing" is a great book for any business owner who wants to have a better understanding of electronic commerce. I have had a web site for three years, but now have a new understanding of the elements thatcreate a stronger online presence. Bernadette Tiernan has successfullymanaged to address e-tailing in an easy-to-understand and comprehensivemanner. I have specialized in business planning for many years and wouldadvise every business teacher and student, and business owner tofamiliarize themselves with and utilize the concepts presented in"E-Tailing". Kudos for doing a great job of addressing adifficult subject.

Review of PHP 5 Fast & Easy Web Development (Paperback)

This is an "ok" book for web developers.It has some nice features if you can get past the amount of errors in the coded examples and the sometimes confusing and contradictory explanations.There is very little discussion of basic concepts, therefore, I would not recommend this book for anyone who does not have some programming background.
The title, PHP 5 fast & easy web development, is indicative of the book's contents.It provides a series of potentially useful PHP scripts that you can adapt to develop database interactive web pages (emphasis is on the MySQL database).However, like the 2nd edition of Julie Meloni's "PHP fast & easy web development," this book is plagued with coding errors which are not only annoying, but also make understanding the various features of PHP more difficult.
The book starts with instructions on how to install PHP, Apache and MySQL.The remainder of the book consists of a series of increasingly complex scripts, detailed step-by-step.For the first half of the book, the examples are relatively easy to read and carefully documented.However, halfway through the book, segments of code begin to appear without adequate explanation, and as the book progresses, it becomes more a cookbook of code to retype rather than a clear explanation of what the code mean.Instructions about where to insert new lines of code are difficult to follow.In addition, some explanations appear contradictory, which adds to the confusion.The errors in the coded examples are excessive.I can understand a few typos, but lines of code that are substantially different or are missing completely can be found in every chapter.This is unacceptable and unprofessional in a book that is supposed to help you learn a new programming language.

Review of HomeSite 4.5 Fast & Easy Web Development (Paperback)

I'm not completely through this book yet. I like the format and the step-by-step approach with lots of boxes for special notes and cautions. There are a few typos (as mentioned in previous reviews) but, in my opinion, they are minor and did not distract from the subject material.

I am writing this reveiw now because: 1) the www.prima-tech.com site is not working and 2) I wanted to tell readers how to get past a difficulty that I had on page 84.

You need to know the IP address of your PC in order to utilize Personal Web Server while testing your work. There may be other methods, but I did the following: 1) open a MS-DOS window and 2) type "ipconfig" at the c:\windows>" prompt. You can then use this address within your browser (connected or not) to test your work. The author assumed that I already knew how to get and use my IP address. He should include a box on page 84 to explain how to do this for each operating system covered in the book.

Review of Creating Web Pages For Dummies (Paperback)

Don't be fooled by the title "for Dummies".This book includes everything you need to know about creating your own Web page with all the knowledge and software you'll need.You will need to invest some time in this project - but it is worth every minute!It's a simple, step by step process and you will need to take it slow if you're an average creator.

First you'll learn all about Web Publishing Basics, Website strategies and just enough HTML to get started (it's not that hard!).Besides creating your first Web page, you'll learn how to get the darn thing published on the WWW!That's half the battle, but worth the effort!There's lots of information on what to avoid (before you go there) and what makes the best Web page.Before you know it, you'll be upgrading your Web page all the time.You'll never get bored updating and changing your page until it's just perfect!

The book includes an invaluable CD that is useful for Windows and MAC!It contains Microsft Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, Dreamweaver (great design tool!), Frontpage Express, HTML conversion tools for Word (nice short-cut), BBEDIT, GraphicConverter (MAC), Homesite HTML Editor (MAC), Hotdog Express (for Windows - great tool!), SiteCheck utility, an Internet service provider software (if you don't already have one - most likely you have a sufficient one), HTMLValidator (catches errors), WEB Wizard (a nifty quick-and-dirty page maker), Reptile (for making cool backgrounds) and Paint Shop Pro, which is my favorite tool.There's plenty of other stuff too that I just can't get into detail here.

Once again, this does take a little bit of effort, but of all the books I have perused, this one seemed to be the best value for the money.It's all here and updated annually.It is worth every penny.Get your Web site up and running in less than a weekend (even though the book says one day).You'll feel smart when you're done!Enjoy!

Review of Macromedia Studio MX 2004 Bible (Paperback)

The small non-profit company I work for needed a website, and I drew the short straw for designing and maintaining it.We bought the Studio MX suite, and I hoped this book would cover everything I needed to design a simple, yet cool website.

The thing is it DOES cover EVERYTHING I needed, but it is SO overwhelming in all the details, I was pulling my hair out and wondering what I'd gotten myself into.

You really have have some experience with website design before attempting this book.I had no idea what to do, and couldn't filter out what applied to me and what didn't; I needed a little more hand-holding than this book offered.Now that I've been through the H.O.T. and Naked series of help books (which others complain of being too basic), I'm much more comfortable with this book.I'll definitely be using it as a reference as I add dynamic content to the simple website I've built.

Overall, this book is an excellent resource for intermediate or advanced users.Beginners should shop around for other books before buying this one.

This books is WAY too general in it's discussion of Web Design.If you're looking for something that's focused 100% on the theory of web design, this book might be for you.If you're looking for any sort of how-to at all, this book is NOT for you.I purchased this book as a textbook for a Web Site Administration class and I'm wondering why it was even required.

Having been a text-based HTML guy for years, I decided I needed to get with on the WYSIWYG bandwagon.This book has been a tremendous help!Amateur or professional, you can pick up this book and get the information you need in seconds.Whether you use it for refreshing your knowledge of seldom-used functions, or (like me) are learning from scratch, I think this book is a must-have for Dreamweaver users of all skill levels.

Review of Online! The Book (Paperback)

The Internet doesn't come with a manual, but if it did, this is it. This sounds like an exaggeration, but it is not because the book literally covers almost everything for people at all levels computer literacy.

That sounds like a tall order, doesn't it? I agree, yet Dvorak, Pirillo, and Taylor have pulled it off. The book has almost 700 pages of rock solid content in 28 chapters covering hardware, music, meeting people, gaming, networking, email, and more.

Though I read as much as I can about technology since getting my first computer in 1980, the book has material that cover areas I know less about such as enterprise instant messaging and peer-to-peer communication.

The topics are tackled at the 30-foot level and the 30,000-foot level. For example, we know emails are those messages that fill up our mailboxes with some in the ugly disguise of spam. The email chapter has contents on its history, protocols, clients, spam (of course), header analysis, filtering, and etiquette.

Protocols, header analysis, and filtering are uncomfortable terms for some people. Techie words and concepts are clearly explained without leaving the reader scratching his head and re-reading the paragraph until his eyes cross. Most of the technical terms and tips are in a gray box, so if you don't want to deal with it you skip over the visual cue. Tips are also in little boxes with a photo of Pirillo running into a window (again) or Dvorak in his Hulk Hogan wanna-be garb.

Business folk benefit from chapters on commuting, Internet marketing, content management, business Web sites, Internet law, and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). The Ten-Step Commute chapter takes a trip into the world of teleworking with advice on how to sell it to the boss, setting up remote access, and security.

This is not the heavy, boring textbook students lug around campus. The authors throw in their senses of humor throughout the manual. You could find the stuff in the book (where else?) online, but it takes many searches and hours to find the gold nuggets. Take a break and let the book do its job.

Believe it or not, I didn't notice the sub-title of the book when I wrote the first paragraph. When I got the book, I went right inside the cover. Online! The Book lives up to its sub-title, "Because the Internet does not come with a manual."

P.S. I take book reviews seriously. Some of you may know I write for Chris Pirillo's Lockergnome.com. If I didn't like the book, you wouldn't be reading this. No, he didn't pay me to say this. In fact, he doesn't know I've read the book and wrote a review.

Read the title!This is not an HTML book.If you are hoping to be able to code your first web site after reading this book, you might struggle a bit.

This is a decent book on how to construct a web site.As with most "Dummies" books the explanations seem to drag.However, I have found that they can be a good introduction to a subject, if the reader is truly "in the dark".

If you have never written any type of computer program, or if you struggle with using your computer, and are still set on creating your own web page (go for it; they aren't that tough) buy this book and "HTML for Dummies".The combination of the two will get you up and running.

This is a very simple book - really just screen shots of the menus for various tasks and it steps you through the most general and simple use of them.For all practical purposes, there is no information about anything in this book!The typical treatment of a subject is a simple paragraph that essentially says "You might want to do this with your web page - well you can!"Then screen shots of the process involved in its simplest form.Next topic... It is difficult for me to imagine this would be of any use to anyone.

If you have never looked at HTML before, this is a great book to get you started.Expect no reliance on commercial web editors, this book tells you how to create your web pages in Windows Notepad or a similar text editor.The tools he gives you in this first book match and exceed what a novicewould get using a template from a commercial web editor.If there isanything negative about this book, it is that it makes transition to a webeditor harder.With the essentials this book offers, it is easier to popinto Notepad and make the change than to figure out the software.All inall, I don't think that is such a bad thing.
