Review of Windows 2000 Administration for Dummies (Paperback)

Having worked as a systems administrator for a Windows NT (as well as Unix and Linux) network(s), I found this book to be completely silly, and of hardly any real use whatsoever. Bellmo's attempt at providing an intelligent and useful guide to the implementation of a W2K server and network is no better than a Public Relations blurb for Microsoft. He relies on a number of unsupported assumptions about the superiority of W2K without actually discussing (or demonstrating) how this latest version from the Microsoft family is better than the previous one. He wastes valuable time praising the new "bells and whistles" W2K has to offer, when he should have spent more time and energy explaining (and showing) how W2k might make your LAN more reliable and less costly. This book, like so many others, is mostly just technical hype.

Review of AI Techniques for Game Programming (The Premier Press Game Development Series) (Paperback)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so let me tell you what I was looking for:a non-academic AI book with practical examples for implementing genetic algorithms and neural nets.I don't have a math degree (though I understand basic algebra and remember a bit of trig), and I learn best by doing hand's on project, not by theorizing.

This book fits the bill perfectly. It is well written, humorous, clear and patient. The examples are interesting enough that you can see how they would be useful for solving other problems, not necessarily game related.

One caveat:if you don't have a decent intro to basic Win32 API programming, get Charles Petzold's Programming Win32 book and get busy.Yes, the first two chapters of AI Techniques are a Win32 refresher (which was good for me because I last wrote Win32 3 years ago...I now do Java only), but I'm pretty sure if you haven't seen it before you'll be lost.

BTW, just to give you an idea how clear the concepts were presented, I've recoded Chapters 3 and 5 as properly OOPed (MVC, etc) Java applications.Just MHO, but Java is a much better platform for this stuff. ...

Product Description
AI Techniques for Game Programming takes the difficult topics of genetic algorithms and neural networks, explaining them in plain English. Gone are the tortuous mathematic equations and abstract examples to be found in other books. Each chapter will take you through the theory a step at a time using fun, practical examples and providing you with all the knowledge you require to start incorporating these esoteric techniques into your own games and applications.

After a whirlwind tour of Windows programming for those readers who require a refresher, you will learn how to use genetic algorithms for optimization, path-finding and evolving control sequences for your game agents. After learning the basics of neural networks, AI Techniques for Game Programming will demonstrate how you can evolve neural motion controllers for your game agents, and how neural networks may be applied to obstacle avoidance and map exploration. You will learn about backpropagation and pattern recognition and will discover how to train a network to recognize mouse gestures. Finally, you'll learn state-of-the-art techniques for creating neural networks with dynamic topologies.

Each chapter is complimented by well-commented source code and most provide fun exercises and problems for you to practice your new found knowledge.

Review of Game Testing All in One (Game Development Series) (Paperback)

Traditional program testing has come a long way in 50 years but the complexity, time constraints and variety of situations facing game testers is at the edge of the software testing world.

The authors combine authentic experience with Computer Games and Game Testing in a logical, pragmatic and interesting way. They long ago reasoned that it is very costly (if not sometimes impossible) to test all possible paths through a game's options and through the application of some insightful statistical approaches present ways to reduce the total number of tests required under certain assumptions. To me this one insight was worth the cost of the book.

Beyond this outstanding statistical testing insight for the workers in the field, the expository material that coversGames is exceptionally good for the individual trying to put the whole field in perspective. In Part I they address "Being a Game Tester" (with a side venture later in the book to identify different game testing personalities) followed by a good discussion of "Why Testing is Important". Part II talks about the "Making of a Game" while Part III introduces the concepts and vocabulary of Testing. In Part IV the authors bring in the concept of Combinatorial Testing ( another statistical approach) and present it in a step by step way so that the tester can perform the testing suite without knowing all of the theory behind that approach. "Test Flow Diagrams", "Cleanroom Testing" and "Test Trees" adds very modern disciplined techniques to the testing tool process that will prove of value. Part V discusses some advanced testing ideas all of which are very practical in the fast evolving world of Games.

The authors seem to have been brought together and inspired to write just at the time when the field realizes that loosely structured ad-hoc testing may be costing more than the field can afford.

Review of Systems Management for Information Technology and Software Engineering (Wiley Series in Systems Engineering and Management) (Hardcover)

This book preceded the Software Engineering Institute's initiative to integrate the capability maturity models for software and system engineering and integrated product development into the CMMI by three years. However, the approach provided by the author is remarkably similar to and consistent with the CMMI, which makes this book an excellent resource to anyone interested in that model family.

Chapter 2, which covers system engineering process life cycles is one of the most complete treatments I've read. In fact, this chapter is not strictly confined to SE life cycle models. It also covers acquisition and product development life cycles, as well as those of R&D, test and evaluation and software development.

What I most like about this book is the well thought-out and coherent blending of systems engineering factors and integrated product development into a software engineering approach.Where the CMMI is more focused on key processes and practice areas, Mr. Sage provides implementation details and a large number of techniques.I also like the strong emphasis on quality and organizational structure, which are discussed in depth in chapters 6 and 7.

Much of the underlying technical detail is quantitative, particularly in chapters 3 through 5, which cover risk management, metrics and cost assessments.

The CMMI notwithstanding, the real value of this book is the wide view of integrated system and software engineering, and the low-level details it provides on every facet of both disciplines. This comprehensive book earns a solid 5 stars.

Introducing a breakthrough approach to managing innovation, productivity, and quality assurance

This book describes a systems management approach that successfully integrates the latest systems engineering methodologies with cutting-edge process management approaches. Since the ultimate goal of this approach is total quality assurance through process-related improvements throughout an entire organization, the book examines a broad range of interrelated issues, many of which are not generally covered in traditional systems engineering texts, including systems architectures and integration, quality assurance management, process reengineering and process maturity, metrics for cost and quality evaluation, software economics, and operational effectiveness evaluation for the management of large information and software systems.

A superb graduate-level text for software engineering, systems engineering, and computer science programs, as well as business administration and management courses in managing IT, Systems Management for Information Technology and Software Engineering is also an invaluable source of ideas, inspiration, and expert guidance for software and systems engineers, human factors professionals, software development managers, and systems management engineers.

Traditional software engineering approaches to managing innovation, productivity, and quality assurance focus almost entirely on the performance of individual programmers. But, just as those working in the environmental sphere have come to realize the dangers of focusing too narrowly on individual species while ignoring the needs of overall ecosystems, thinkers in the field of information systems engineering have begun to recognize the need for a systems management approach that encompasses all facets of the software development organization.

Now, this groundbreaking text offers such an approach. In it, Professor Andrew Sage provides readers with a rational framework for the production of trustworthy, high-quality software and information technology systems. These combine cutting-edge systems engineering methodologies developed at top software development firms with innovative process management approaches that have been introduced successfully by many of the leading information technology and other business organizations around the world over the past decade. The bottom line of the systems management approach outlined is total quality assurance through process-related improvements throughout the entire organization. The book, therefore, addresses, in depth, a wide array of interrelated issues, many of which are not generally covered in systems engineering texts, including:

  • Process development life cycle
  • Process configuration management
  • Systems architectures and integration
  • Product development standards
  • Metrics for cost and operational effectiveness evaluation
  • Evaluation and reengineering of organizational cultures
  • Strategic quality assurance and Management, or TQM
  • Process reengineering and maturity

Systems Management for Information Technology and Software Engineering is an excellent graduate-level text for programs in software engineering, systems engineering, computer science, and business administration and management. At the same time, it is also an invaluable reference for working software and systems engineers, human factors professionals, software development and information technology managers, and systems management engineers.

From the Publisher
Emphasizing macro-level and systems management approaches, this book covers important concerns for trustworthy development of process-related pathways to create systems. The dominant thrust is the systems management of procedures for information technology and software development organizations. This involves a number of relevant issues associated with systems architectures and integration, quality assurance and management, process reengineering, metrics, software economics and cost and operational effectiveness analysis.
