Review of Microsoft VBScript Professional Projects (Paperback)

There just are not that many really good VBScript books out there. And there are even fewer well written VBScript books that target power users, system admins and advanced readers. Well, this book is one of them. It provides a quick review of VBScript (for those that need a primer or a quick overview) and then procedes to demonstrate how to use VBScript to tackle several different projects. This approach provides a great balance between theory and practical hands-on application.

Product Description
Microsoft's VBScript, a simplified version of VisualBasic, is a powerful, easy-to-learn tool that can add interaction toWeb pages. VBScript Professional Projects distinguishes itself fromthe competition by being the only book to offer a project-basedapproach for higher-end users and to provide coverage of VBScript'sapplicability to both Web and WSH scripting. It is the ideal guide forVBA and Visual Basic programmers who wish to expand their programmingcapabilities using a scripting language.

Review of PHP Professional Projects (Paperback)

This book was a great disappointment! I am building a large application in PHP and was looking for some good project planning strategies and patterns. Instead I found the usual shopping cart examples written as if for a small scale project. The code snippets are full of white space and a few lines of code takes up an entire page, hence it is hard to follow. What little code I did try was full of errors and bad syntax. This book does not have a CD with it so you must type in all the code that you may want to start with. I suggest the book 'Web Applications Development with PHP 4.0' for your true professional projects.

Product Description
This book provides a hands-on approach to learning PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, which is a server-side scripting language. The book is aimed at both novice as well as advance level readers. Readers might only have the basic knowledge of HTML or might already know Web-based programming. The readers will use the PHP concepts that they learn in the book to create professional projects.

The book starts with a few overview chapters that cover the key concepts of Web-based programming. These chapters act as an information store for programmers who may need to brush up their prior programming knowledge. A major part of the book revolves around professional projects. These projects enable programmers to learn about various tasks by following a simple to complex approach. Each project covers a specific subject area and guides the readers by using practical scenarios. The projects range from a simple project that involves creating plain data entry Web pages using HTML and saving the information in a text file. Then the books moves to complex projects that involve creating Web pages containing PHP scripts and storing information in MySQL databases. These projects help programmers to accomplish their goals by understanding the practical and real-life application of PHP in Web page designing. Each project in the book is a guide for the reader to create a part of a large Web site.

Apart from the overview chapters and the professional projects, this book also includes two additional sections, Beyond the Lab and Appendices. The Beyond the Lab section serves as both a summary of what the reader has learned throughout the projects and as a road map for where the reader can go to expand on this knowledge. This section also covers the future direction of the programming language. The Appendices act as a quick reference for PHP functions and certain concepts that a reader might want to explore further.

Use PHP to accomplish real-world, professional tasks.

Incorporating five hands-on projects, PHP Professional Projects is your key to unlocking the power of PHP. Each project focuses on a specific PHP concept and is based on a real-world situation. You will be able to use the skills that you develop throughout the book to modify the projects as needed to fit your professional needs.

CREATE A USER REGISTRATION FORM

It breaks the process down into simple "bite size" tasks that the reader can complete over a few days - provided they have read ahead.

The information in this book has helped me drive significantly moretraffic to my website and to several of my colleagues' sites as well.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to increase their web presence.

Review of Microsoft WSH and VBScript Programming for the Absolute Beginner (Paperback)

This book is an absolute must for the beginning VBScript programmer. Not only does Ford provide step-by-step direction to scripting, gradually ramping the complexity of the exercises, but he leaves the reader with WORKING scripts in the form of games with foundational concepts applicable to real-world scripting development.

My primary objective was to learn VBScripting basics to support script enhancements for Mercury Interactive's QuickTest Pro tool (that is based in VBScript), and this book well served its purpose.

I highly recommend it to other readers.

Review of Game Scripting Mastery (Premier Press Game Development) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I own most of the books in the Permier Press Game Development Series and I have read through most of them, but what I really appreciated about this book was the authors focus on the subject. As much as I enjoy brushing up on windows programming and re-learning a little bit of C/C++, the author wasted no time and got right to the focus of the book; game scripting.

Product Description
Game Scripting Mastery is your key to the complicated issue of scripting. It provides a detailed guide to the design and implementation of a full-featured game scripting system. This book focuses on the design of procedural, C-style languages and their compilation to virtual machine code. Alternative scripting methods are discussed as well, including dynamic linking and simple, command-based languages. This is the first book to provide you with complete, comprehensive, and highly accessible information on game scripting. The CD includes the DirectX SDK, all source code from the book and other tools to turn you into a scripting master.

Review of Microsoft C# Professional Projects (Paperback)

I purchased this book because I learn best by following examples based on real, useful projects.I have completed project 1 and thus far have these observations:

1)Though "validating data" is stressed, the example code does a very poor job of doing so.

2)The authors seem to forget what they need in their example forms. For example, the CustomerForm in project 1 is supposed to be able to add and edit records contained in a customer table. However, they authors forgot to create a way to add the record!

3)Some of the information is presented out of sequence and thus causes a great deal of confusion. For example, chapter 9 is on Validations and Exception Handling. It looks like this information was once part of chapter 10 and the authors decided that they should discuss validation first. However, it appears that they forgot to rewrite the material so that it would make sense in its new context!I found myself flipping back and forth between the two capters in order to finish the project.

4)Even with these problems, the book would still be useful if an online errata existed. However, I have not been able to locate one on the Website provided.

5)Project 1 presents an inconsistent interface. Each of the forms in the project has a similar purpose but entirely different interfaces and controls.I believe the authors did this in order to show the reader that there are different ways to use .NET Studio to do the job, but I do not recall that this was actually mentioned in the text. All I can say is do not use the projects in this book as models for good interface design.

I have been a programmer for almost three decades and I am already knowledgeable in Java, C++ and Visual Basic, so I am still able to use this book as a tutorial to learn the features of C# and the .NET programming interface.Since this book was still useful in that respect, I have given it 2 Stars instead of 1.However, if you are new to object oriented programming or new to programming in general, please give this book a skip.

Review of Picture Yourself Drumming: Step-by-Step Instruction for Drum Kit Setup, Reading Music, Learning from the Pros, and More (Paperback)

I borrowed this book from the library 4 times before I decided I just had to add this to my collection. From the beginner to the novice drummer, there's something for everyone in this book. It takes you from what the "job description" of a drummer is, how to get a kit, how to set it up and tune the drums, how to read music, basic beats, advanced beats, fills, more fills, advanced drumming techniques and then where to go from there (ie, join a band, music lessons, recordings, etc).
I've been a drummer (on and off) for almost 18 years now and did the garage band thing back in the day. I still learned quite a few things from this book.
It's also a very easy read. So much so that my impatient 11 year old son picked it up and figured out how to lay a basic click. If it works for him.. hey, you gotta get this book!
The absolute only thing I would have liked different about this book is to have audio tracks either with or in place of the dvd. I'm not usually around a tv/dvd setup, especially when practicing. But I do have a cd/mp3 player handy. However, the dvd is fantastic! Far better quality and detail than I expected.
In summary, you can't afford not to get this book. If you're just starting out, this is your launch point. If you're already playing, this will shore up your educational/experience shortfalls. Something for everyone here, a real winner.

Product Description
Imagine yourself onstage with your band. As the band plays, the crowd moves to the rhythm-your rhythm. The rhythm that you feel in your bones and set loose on the crowd. Drummers aren't front and center. They're not often the face of the band. Instead, they are its heart. It's the drummer who sets the pace and keeps the song on track. Picture Yourself Drumming is an easy-to-follow, visual guide that will help you tackle the basic skills you need to someday control that crowd with your own driving beat. If you have some natural rhythm, a set of sticks, and a desire to become a drummer, then this book was written for you. The accompanying DVD includes tips for a variety of drumming techniques as well as coaching sessions and step-by-step instructions for setting up each piece of your new drum kit.

Review of PHP 5 Fast & Easy Web Development (Paperback)

This is an "ok" book for web developers. It has some nice features if you can get past the amount of errors in the coded examples and the sometimes confusing and contradictory explanations. There is very little discussion of basic concepts, therefore, I would not recommend this book for anyone who does not have some programming background.
The title, PHP 5 fast & easy web development, is indicative of the book's contents. It provides a series of potentially useful PHP scripts that you can adapt to develop database interactive web pages (emphasis is on the MySQL database). However, like the 2nd edition of Julie Meloni's "PHP fast & easy web development," this book is plagued with coding errors which are not only annoying, but also make understanding the various features of PHP more difficult.
The book starts with instructions on how to install PHP, Apache and MySQL.The remainder of the book consists of a series of increasingly complex scripts, detailed step-by-step.For the first half of the book, the examples are relatively easy to read and carefully documented. However, halfway through the book, segments of code begin to appear without adequate explanation, and as the book progresses, it becomes more a cookbook of code to retype rather than a clear explanation of what the code mean.Instructions about where to insert new lines of code are difficult to follow. In addition, some explanations appear contradictory, which adds to the confusion. The errors in the coded examples are excessive.I can understand a few typos, but lines of code that are substantially different or are missing completely can be found in every chapter. This is unacceptable and unprofessional in a book that is supposed to help you learn a new programming language.

Product Description

With "PHP 5 Fast & Easy Web Development" you can get up and running with PHP 5, Apache, and MySQL with ease. Review of Inspired 3D Character Setup (Paperback)

I have been using Maya extensively now for two years and bought this book to try to take myself into the intermediate level of character rigging.
The first problem I encountered with this book is that I opened it and the spine broke! Not exactly what you would expect from a [$$$] book.
I think it went downhill from there. Yes the pictures are beautiful and the it really showcases what you can do with Maya(or what others have done), but the editing in this book is terrible. Examples include naming of nodes that on the same page have two different names. The downloads don't match the book. e.g. ch13 has the low-res geo download that doesnt include the sphereCTRL or the cubeCTRL but sure has the proxyGEO. Anyone think i'm messed up? send me the right one please..
Otherwise, you are better off with the Art of Maya, or Secrets of the Pros. I think this is one not quite worth the money.

Review of AppleScript Programming for the Absolute Beginner (Paperback)

I found this book to be well written and easy to use. Like most books these days, it has a few typos in it. I guess that just a sign of the time. Still, there are not many of them. All of the examples were clearly explained and easy to follow. I am about 80 percent of the way through and I have yet to run into any trouble. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a learning AppleScript.

Review of Learn HTML 4 In a Weekend, 4th Edition (Paperback)

Most HTML instructional books I've seen are closer to reference manuals than learning tools. If you want to learn how to build web pages from scratch using native HTML this is the book you should be looking at.Years ago I used the 1998 "Revised Edition" of this book which came with a CD to learn most of what I know about HTML.What I liked the most about it was that it separated each major study area into standalone elements. When I finished a particular tutorial session I could actually start using what I learned in real life web pages. In addition, all the coding examples presented in the book were also on the CD I got with the book. On thing I especially liked was that I found nothing strange in any of Callihan's coding examples.Unlike a lot of authors of technical books he doesn't make any assumptions about his readers' prior technical knowledge. His coding example only used HTML commands that he had already thoroughly explained in his instructional text.

The "Revised Edition" version of the book I read began with teaching you the basic HTML commands, then it moved on to the intermediate commands, then advanced commands and finally it dealt with a few of the more esoteric subjects. The book would almost certainly bore most web savvy readers; however, if you're a novice and want to learn HTML from scratch I highly recommend buying this one.

One last thing, it's just a cute title.Don't expect to be whipping out web pages after just one weekend. It will take you at least two or three.I never did get around to reading "The Frames Tutorial" section of my book and since I don't use frames I probably never will.

Product Description
Complete just the first two tutorial sessions to develop the HTML skills that you need to start creating fully functional and effective Web pages. Over the weekend, complete as many of the other optional tutorial sessions as you want to further extend your knowledge of more advanced topics like adding colors and backgrounds, using tables, working with frames and forms, using styles, and creating multi-column page layouts. Learn to create standard HTML 4.01 Web pages, to help ensure future compatibility and accessibility. Following your weekend, explore the appendixes for additional information and guidance on creating XHTML Web pages, using special characters and character sets, designing your own custom Web graphics, completing your wishlist (adding audio, video, animations, image maps, scripts, applets, and dynamic HTML), and using FTP to transfer your completed Web pages to your Web host's server on the Web.

Review of Just Enough C/C++ Programming (Paperback)

Are you a beginner or intermediate C and C++ programmer? If you are, this book is for you! Author Guy W. Lecky-Thompson, has done an outstanding job of writing a great book that provides you with just enough information on the subject of C/C++ in hand to be useful in the real world.

Lecky-Thompson, begins by showing you what the tools of the trade really are, some of the basic concepts related to the programming process. Next, the author focuses on the programming primer. Then, he covers some of the various concepts that make up the typical C program. The author continues by showing you how information is stored in a program. In addition, the author introduces you to Console I/O--showing you ways to get information from the user and display it on the screen. He also shows you how to selectively perform tasks based on the outcome of preceding tasks, which is vital in programming. Next, the author covers mechanisms that are available for task repetition. Then, he covers standard libraries. The author continues by providing you with a detailed explanation of how programs process incoming arguments; and, how you can create functions within your programs. In addition, he deals with file I/O--which deals with ways to process files and perform external data storage. The author also shows you how you can create your own templates for storing information. Next, he looks at pointers--which is an advanced programming topic, but necessary for understanding the bridge into C++. Then, the author looks at pre-processor directives--which detail how you communicate with the program charged with taking your code and turning it into an application. He continues by discussing the extensions to C that make C++ a useful language. In addition, the author gives you some direction as to how you can go about using all of this information. Finally, he provides a list of all the various useful Web references.

This most excellent book provides vast amounts of reference material. What's most important though, is to use the source code from the companion Web site, and click on the Downsload button.

Product Description
C/C++ programming is often thought of as inaccessible, but these languages form the basis for many other programming languages and paradigms, and as such are vital, necessary skills for any IT professional to learn. Just Enough C/C++ Programming provides an intelligent layperson's guide to programming. The book does not assume you are dimwitted, like so many other beginning programming texts do, but it doesn't assume you are an engineer either. It simply gives you enough C/C++ language knowledge to be able to complete practical, industry-related, programming projects without becoming sidetracked. In short, it teaches you everything you need to know to be a successful programmer, without overloading you on the details. The book begins by explaining the tools you'll need, providing a concise introduction to the world of programming, and explaining the basic structure of a C program. Algorithm design for common programming problems, use of compilers and pre-processors, and the standard ANSI C libraries are all covered in enough detail so that you can pick up and apply the knowledge immediately. Next, the book covers the most relevant differences between C and C++, including C++ Standard Libraries, templates, and STL. The companion web site includes usable sample code for download and key pointers on how the code can be adapted for real-world use. Perfect for any aspiring software developer, Just Enough C/C++ Programming offers both a comfortable read, and practical, applicable, ready-to-use knowledge.

Review of Swords & Circuitry: A Designer's Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games (Game Development) (Paperback)

This book has been out for a few years, and unfortunately, it has never really received the attention it so richly deserves. From the title, you might infer that it teaches how to design role-playing games, which it does, but what might not be immediately obvious is that the information contained in it can be applied to games from any genre.

This book discusses everything from product life cycles, to plot design, to team roles, to world building, to gameplay issues, and much more. Each topic is covered in detail, with advice and examples. The book includes in-depth interviews with people behind some of the top role-playing games (e.g. Dungeon Siege and Neverwinter Nights), as well as copies of real design documents from leading games (e.g. the world layout from Fallout and the design document from Nox).

The Halfords' writing style is colorful without being condescending. Neal's experience shows through as he is able to back up all of his advice with real-world experience on major titles.

This is quite simply one of the best game design books on the market, and an entertaining read to boot. I give it my highest recommendation.

Product Description
Computer role-playing games (RPGs) allow players to assume the role of a hero out to conquer an epic challenge. During the course of the game, the player's character "learns" new spells and skills that, in turn, allow him or her to explore even more of the game world and to solve the quest presented by the game designers. Never in the history of gaming have role-playing titles been more popular. Swords & Circuitry: A Designer's Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games takes the reader on a journey into the arcane world of game development, deciphering the mysteries of the role-playing audience, the history of RPGs, the technical definition of the genre, the roles of a game designer, the fundementals of building good gameplay and interfaces, and last, but certainly not least, the art of professional worldbuilding. Featuring actual design document excerpts from the hit games Deus Ex, Fallout, Nox, and Stonekeep, it also presents in-depth interviews with top role-playing designers like John Cutter (Betrayal at Krondor), Chris Taylor (Dungeon Siege), Trent Oster (Neverwinter Nights), Sarah Stocker (Pools of Radiance II: The Ruins of Myth Drannor), Jon Van Caneghem (Might & Magic series), and Carly Staehlin (Ultima Online ). Game industry artists Shawn Sharp, Jon Gwyn, Jim Wible, and Jeff Perryman also provide exciting and topical illustrations that evoke not only the look, but the feel of the worlds that every role-playing designer strives to create. Co-written by a veteran marketeer and the designer behind role-playing bestsellers Betrayal at Krondor, Planet's Edge, Might & Magic III: Isles of Terra, and Dungeon Siege, readers will discover everything that a role-playing title must have to succeed!

About the Author
Neal Hallford has been a professional game designer for more than 13 years and has led the development of several best-selling computer role-playing titles. He has co-authored the story behind the New York Times best-selling novel "Krondor: The Betrayal" and has created stories and designs for well known computer role-playing games, including "Betrayal at Krondor", "Planet's Edge", and "Dungeon Siege." He is currently leading the creation of "Lords of Everquest", a real-time strategy game based on the largest massively multiplayer role-playing game in the United States.

Review of Focus On SDL (The Premier Press Game Development Series) (Paperback)

I am a sophmore in college studying computer engineering, and I bought this book in the hopes that it would help me with a programming project for school. The main thing that this book has going for it is the fact that it is actually writing about SDL... not many other books go into this subject and it is refreshing to see a book that doesn't limit itself to the Windows/DirectX world.

The book is written in easy to understand language and is very helpful in showing what SDL is capable of. It proceeds to show readers how to set up most of SDL's different subsystems.

The main problem with this book is that it does not go into detail about any of the topics it covers. If you're curious about how to use SDL's video/graphics capablity, for instance, you will learn how to initialize the system and draw some circles on the screen. The book has smaller pages than most, and the 54 pages long chapter on the video subsystem doesn't take long to get through. It leaves you wanting to know more.

In short, this book will skim over different topics in SDL and teach you enough to get started. You will need to look elsewhere for details. I recommend purchasing this book to get you on the right track, but just know that you will need to search the internet for tutorials and example applications before you can seriously write games. This book is only a beginning.

Since you are looking at a book on SDL, I assume you are trying either to learn how to program games/graphical applications for Linux, or are trying to make it so that the code you write can have multi-platform support. If this is the case, I would recommend looking at "Linux Game Programming" by Mark Collins (in the same series as this book) and "Programming Linux Games" by Loki Software/John Hall as well. Of these three books, I like "Programming Linux Games" best since it goes into greater detail and walks you through the creation of a basic, but complete game for Linux. Even though it has Linux in the title, most of the APIs it touches on (SDL, OpenGL, OpenAL, etc.) are cross-platform, so what you learn is not limited to Linux alone. For the project I was working on, I found myself jumping amoung the aforementioned books and online tutorials such as those at NeHe.
