There are many books on the market about increasing web traffic; I have read several of them. After completing significant research, I have found that this book is one of the best available. It breaks the process down into simple "bite size" tasks that the reader can complete over a few days - provided they have read ahead.

The information in this book has helped me drive significantly moretraffic to my website and to several of my colleagues' sites as well.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to increase their web presence.

Review of Microsoft WSH and VBScript Programming for the Absolute Beginner (Paperback)

This book is an absolute must for the beginning VBScript programmer.Not only does Ford provide step-by-step direction to scripting, gradually ramping the complexity of the exercises, but he leaves the reader with WORKING scripts in the form of games with foundational concepts applicable to real-world scripting development.

My primary objective was to learn VBScripting basics to support script enhancements for Mercury Interactive's QuickTest Pro tool (that is based in VBScript), and this book well served its purpose.

I highly recommend it to other readers.

Despite a few typos and a little age, this book is still a classic and provides a perfect text for jumping into the world of Windows scripting.

Review of AppleScript Programming for the Absolute Beginner (Paperback)

I found this book to be well written and easy to use. Like most books these days, it has a few typos in it. I guess that just a sign of the time. Still, there are not many of them. All of the examples were clearly explained and easy to follow. I am about 80 percent of the way through and I have yet to run into any trouble. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a learning AppleScript.

Review of Absolute Beginner's Guide to Personal Firewalls (Paperback)

This books leaves a mixed impression. First of all, although the book is called "for absolute beginners", it is not written as a book for housewives who never saw a computer before. It is interesting, informative, and the reader is assumed to be knowledgeable and capable of making informed decisions. In fact, one has to have a certain understanding of Windows (yes, it is not oriented towards Mac users) and TCP/IP to understand what the author is talking about. The author obviously has very extensive knowledge of internet security, and the book includes much of his practical knowldge. The negative side is that less than 1/3 of the book is generic and applicable to any firewall, i.e., discusses why home networks need to be protected, and where are the potential areas of vulnerability. The rest is step by step description of how to install and configure several commercial firewalls. Frankly, I do not understand who needs all these details since installation/setup guidelines are always included in the software manual which one gets in printed or electronic form together with the purchased program, whereas it is an obvious fact that any particular version of the program gets obsolete very quickly. I doubt that any of the descriptions of software from the book remains relevant two years after the book came out in 2001. I would rather prefer to see more generic (and less dependent on the software version) discussion of how to take advantage of the features present in most firewalls (blocking certain protocols, applications, IP addresses, etc.). All this said, this book is "beginner's guide" only because it does not get into too many details of what exactly firewalls do, and how they do it. However, those few items which are discussed are covered in significant depth and on a good professional level.
