Review of Steal This Computer Book 3: What They Won't Tell You About the Internet (Paperback)

I orderd this book after seeing the "stunning" reviews it recieved on this site.I'm sorry to say that I am very disappointed.I got it yesterday morning and was real eager to get into it, but within an hour I just stopped reading. Why?

Dont get me wrong this isnt a bad book per-se and its just that it has its audience and i'm not part of it.This is for people\parents\employers\new users to the internet who want to know more about its dark underbelly.

If you know or understand phrases like- firewalls, sniffers, back-doors, loggers, scanners, spam, idtheft, filters, Airsnort, dumpster-diving, social-engineering, shoulder surfing and so on....- then dont even pick this book up.I'm no computer security guru but i'd say a couple of days surfing the net and you'll soon have the bones of this book.

If on the other hand, you're new to the net, you're worried about you kids safety while on the net, who's using your computer, what they're doing, what other could be doing to you, or just need a quick jumpstart into the darker side of the net then maybe (and only just maybe!!) you should consider this book.

Its like one reviewer said, its for the ordinary guy, but if you've done any bit of work in IT then a lot of it will seem like fluff. So I've left it for now but am not gonna throw it out, its something i'll read when i got time and also there looks to be some interesting sections that I'm gonna look through.

It still gets 2 stars though; one because its well organsied and written in a very easy to understand language, not too technical which is definately a plus if you're new to the net and all thing computers, and two beacuse theres a lot of good links to related software and sites that can help you understand more.Think of it as a good reference\starting point.

Peronally i'd say save you're money and read "computer espoinage, counter measures and tactics" if you want more intersting read.

Review of Canning Spam: You've Got Mail (That You Don't Want) (Paperback)

A very easy to read book that goes through various aspects of spam, and how to minimise your exposure to it. Of course, you need to be familiar with email, because you're getting spam, aren't you? But other than that, the technical background needed to understand the authors' points is minimal.

They explain clearly and in simple terms why spam exists, and the common ways in which spammers can get your email address and the typical characteristics of the spam that they send.

Various simple antispam techniques are shown. These are mostly aimed at the end user. For example, they suggest that you do not post your email address widely on the net. Or, if you post it on your web page, you choose something like drawing it in an image, so that a spam bot cannot harvest it. Or having an obscure address, like j0e3892@someisp.com, instead of a simple joe@someisp.com. So that your address cannot be found by a dictionary attack.

The problem with the authors' suggestions is that they undermine a lot of the usefulness of email. For example, having a short and simple address helps others remember it and type it correctly. And being able to just disseminate addresses widely was and still remains a core utility of email.

Product Description

Bad things can come in small packages. Have you ever innocently opened a vicious email? Have you ever wondered how some spammers have acquired your email address? And who are the people behind these messages? We've all been victims at one time or another. Canning Spam - You've Got Mail that You Don't Want is a book for all of us who use email. The author demystifies viruses and spam, explaining how spammers gain access to email addresses, how attackers can trick users into opening messages, how email clients can help and hurt, and how spammers can use corporate email servers as a front for their unwanted messages. The book contains stories about spam, viruses, and hackers that make for entertaining and informative reading. Each chapter includes practical advice for administrators setting policy and installing filters to block spam, as well as tips for users to help them avoid becoming part of the problem.

From the Inside Flap
People are talking about 'Canning Spam'

"Sinister spammers are determined to pack our email boxes with unsolicited advertising, steal our identities, and expose our systems to harmful computer code. In 'Canning Spam,' Jeremy Poteet reveals the inside information, tips, and tricks that every user needs for self-defense. Don't read or send another email message until you've read this book!"
--Joe Kraynak, author of dozens of best-selling books including The Complete Idiot's Guide to Computer Basics, Que's Internet Yellow Pages, and Best of the Internet

"'Canning Spam' is an invaluable resource for those who suffer from one of the most -- if not the most -- annoying and debilitating misuses of the Internet. With this book, readers will become educated on the many faces of spam, how it works, and most importantly, what to do to rid your PC of it."
--Marc Saltzman, syndicated consumer tech journalist and author

"Spam is the worst thing about using the Internet -- if you're like me, you almost dread looking in your inbox every morning, knowing that you'll be besieged by come-ons, scams, and offers to enlarge certain private body parts. 'Canning Spam' will help you take back your inbox. It offers real-world, hands-on advice that will not only clean out your inbox, but help keep you off spam lists. And its in-depth explanations of how spam is created and how you can stop it will help you figure out spam-fighting techniques on your own. Buy this book and get back your inbox."
--Preston Gralla, author of 30 books, including How the Internet Works, and columnist for Ziff-Davis

"'Canning Spam' is a detailed examination of the spam and virus problems facing all computer users today. Not only does one learn the stories behind the problems, the author also provides common-sense solutions that one can use to reduce the incidence of spam and other email-borne annoyances. Particularly interesting are the real-world "case studies" that the author uses to demonstrate how regular users are affected by these pesky attacks. All computer users should take the precautions recommended in this book!"
--Michael Miller, President, The Molehill Group; author of more than fifty best-selling books including Absolute Beginner's Guide to eBay

"Spam is a big problem. People are tired of weeding through tons of useless information, wasting their precious time, and being exposed to a continual barrage of electronic harassment. This book will prove valuable to you in describing the true definition of spam, its origin, and the many techniques and measures in order to prevent it."
--Christian Kenyeres, Consultant

"Do you want to understand spam, email viruses, and all the other mysterious malicious things that go bump in the Internet night? If so, Jeremy Poteet's 'Canning Spam' is the book for you. You'll find more useful info than you ever knew existed, as well as every safe-email tip known to mankind. Once you read this book, you will not only have that wonderful sense of security that comes from knowing what you are doing, you'll be able to hold your own with any of the local neighborhood nerds (not to mention your 12-year-old nephew)."
--Harley Hahn, humorist, computer expert, philosopher, author of Harley Hahn's Internet Yellow Pages

"Unwanted email wastes users' time and employers' money by exploiting both human and technical weakness. 'Canning Spam' combines plain-English descriptions of technical attacks with real-world examples of how and why they work, even when users think they know enough to avoid becoming victims. Until we get to the point that books like this aren't needed, this is one worth recommending to many email users and to every email administrator."
--Peter Coffee, Technology Editor, eWEEK

Review of Getting Started with HIPAA [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

If you are looking for a solid review of the HIPAA Security Rule, I would suggest looking elsewhere. The breadth and depth of this chapter is very narrow (a mere 25 pages of shallow content) and I suspect it was actually written before the Final Security Rule was released in February of this year (2003).The frameworks for assessing Security Policicies and Procedures are nearly non-existent.While the book does have some solid HIPAA content, it's definitely not geared towards accurately assessing one's HIPAA Security Posture.

Product Description
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) touches every aspect of the healthcare industry. Organizations must meet the government established requirements or face severe penalties. "Getting Started with HIPAA" is a practical and solutions-oriented text that presents HIPAA's broad scope of guidelines in a clear and concise manner. It is a highly informative guide that is ideal for future reference. Once finished, you'll feel confident with your knowledge of the HIPAA Administrative Simplification legislation. It will bring you to a complete understanding of HIPAA legislation and its impact, changes that impact patient and medical records, requirements for privacy of patient and payment information, and much more!

Review of Software Exorcism: A Handbook for Debugging and Optimizing Legacy Code (Expert's Voice) (Hardcover)

Software Exorcism is a mind-dump by an experienced maintenance programmer. Bill Blunden lists all the horrendous coding techniques he's come across in commercial software, while offering detailed tips on debugging and optimizing code. The very useful code examples are written in C++, C or assembly language, mostly on an Intel platform.

The aim of the book is to help computer science and engineering students jump the chasm to corporate life by giving them the real-life vocabulary and practices that they can expect to meet over the first few years of their professional life. Much of what they will learn is to forget most of what they've been taught in college -- from terse variable names to an infatuation with recursive routines.

Amongst the challenges that Blunden expands upon are the realities of corporate and office politics. Here are all the gory details of the name-and-blame game, information hiding and "Sysyphean" tasks aimed at pressuring people to quit.

Ultimately, Blunden concludes, software engineering, as a career path, has become a "quaint anachronism" and programming is "strictly a short-term occupation". If he's right, then it's a pity that this book probably won't be seen by most CS students until they're ready to graduate after paying all that tuition.

Product Description
<b>YOU HAVE TO OWN THIS BOOK!</b><p><p><i>Software Exorcism: A Handbook for Debugging and Optimizing Legacy Code</i> takes an unflinching, no bulls$&# look at behavioral problems in the software engineering industry, shedding much-needed light on the social forces that make it difficult for programmers to do their job. Do you have a co-worker who perpetually writes bad code that <i>you</i> are forced to clean up? This is your book. While there are plenty of books on the market that cover debugging and short-term workarounds for bad code, Reverend Bill Blunden takes a revolutionary step beyond them by bringing our attention to the underlying illnesses that plague the software industry as a whole.<p>Further, <i>Software Exorcism</i> discusses tools and techniques for effective and aggressive debugging, gives optimization strategies that appeal to all levels of programmers, and presents in-depth treatments of technical issues with honest assessments that are not biased toward proprietary solutions. <p><b>Slashdot says . . .</b><p>"Leave it to a SubGenius preacher to take normally mundane subjects, like software maintenance, and expose the unholy conspiracy behind them. I think the following quote from the introduction sums up the tone of the book nicely: 'Rather than shield your eyes from the sordid realities of the software industry, I am going to dust off my old 8mm films and let you take a good look at the uncensored truth for yourself. You may want to keep a paper bag handy in case you get sick.<p><b>Readers are saying . . .</b><p><i>"Okay, I've worked with every moron in the book . . . was this [book] written about the guy who sits in the cube next to me?"</i><br>&emdash;Dan, VSLive 2003 Orlando attendee<p><i>"And I thought that I was the only person to ever actually throw my laptop across the room at a fellow coder."</i><br>&emdash;Anonymous, Microsoft PDC, Los Angeles<p>
