Review of PHP Fast & Easy Web Development, 2nd Edition [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

This book is a very good starting point for anyone who wishes to begin programming in PHP.

I picked this book up in hopes of getting somewhat of a grasp of PHP. The book was very successful in presenting appropriate concepts for beginners such as: varibables, arrays and operators. The book also had a few chapters on using MySQL, which is very helpful for anyone who wishes to create full-blown web applications such as shopping carts, forums and news services on their websites.

However, the book was somewhat vague in the amount of content presented. The book is like a giant PHP coding tutorial, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you're not a beginner. For a complete introduction to PHP/MySQL I would suggest buying this book AND PHP/MySQL Web Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thompson. With these two books, a beginner will be on the right path down the complicated road of online applications.

I teach networking classes at Computer Applications Company and I have found this book to be an excellent resource for beginners to learn networking terminology and concepts.Most of the students who used this book learned the concepts quickly.

Review of PC Upgrade & Repair Simplified, 2nd Edition (Paperback)

I have checked several "pc upgrade" books which are in great details but vague. This one has only 225 pages and the best thing of this book is that it practically shows you with images rather than giving you more technical info to make it more complicated. That's why I found it so easy....! to follow. If you really want to learn how to repair or upgrade your pc, then save some money and buy this one.

Review of MySQL/PHP Database Applications, 2nd Edition (Paperback)

While the examples are great and the topic coverage is excellent, there are 2 or more typos on almost every page.It looks like they were in such a hurry to get the thing out the door that quality control was not a consideration.

The typos aren't just in the text; they are quite common in the examples.For instance, when showing an example of a "contact" table, the text refers to contacts while the example shows contracts.There are missing "_"'s in the data names and PHP and SQL syntax mistakes throughout.

Given that, if you are willing to debug the text and the examples, you'll find 99% of what you will need to know to be able to create a database driven website with Apache/PHP/MySQL.

If you need the information now, buy it.If you can, I'd wait for the second edition; perhaps they can reduce the mistakes.

Review of CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide, 2nd Edition (Hardcover)

PROS:
- This is a good book to purchase and utilize for a final prep for the ICND1 exam.
- GREAT video on how to easily SUBNET!!!
- The included practice test were much harder than the Cisco exam, so if you master it you will have NO PROBLEM passing the ICND1 exam and receiving the CCENT certification.
-Great BOSON simulation exam questions.
CONS:
- Some of the examples (figures) in the book use the wrong IP addresses vs. the actual IP addressing scheme
- Some of the test questions showed the wrong IP addresses

I've seen lots of upgrade and repair books, but they were all full of tables of historical info and other stuff I didn't need. This book was great because it ran through practical things like the utilities to use inWindows to correct registry problems and disk errors. I now feel like I cansolve most of the messes I get myself into with Windows. Thanks Faithe!
