Review of Beginning DirectX 9 (Game Development Series) (Paperback)

I was initially impressed with this book, even after seeing a couple pages of utter garbage in the first part. All I wanted was a quick review before my serious books came, and having programmed DX before I could promptly correct and move on, but enough was enough!
I can best describe parts of this book as rough notes fed to a blender and then pasted into the chapters with a leaf-blower. That goes for the `code' samples as well.

For a complete beginner these errors may be significant enough to possibly detract and frustrate the learning experience. Not a good thing, especially considering that's the book's targeted audience. There is no excuse for this.

More advanced developers will cringe and cringe until they finally damage something or hurt someone as they throw this waste across their office. Also not a good thing.

An alternative book that covers the same ground quite a bit more soundly is Frank Luna's Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DX9, which I finally received & promptly read from one end to the other & moved on to other books now. It's a solid work bolted tight with some good code.

2 Stars, for a publishing a work containing some content I wouldn't even turn in as homework.

Product Description
As a beginning programmer, you've probably noticed how difficult it is to find introductory guides to game programming. If you're interested in learning DirectX and are looking for a book that helps you go beyond the 3D component of DirectX and gives you complete coverage of this amazing product, then look no further! "Beginning DirectX 9" gives you examples that build on previous chapters and culminates in the completion of a playable game.

Review of Physical Computing: Sensing and Controlling the Physical World with Computers (Paperback)

The primary purpose of this book is to show the reader how to get the computer to interact with the physical world through additional hardware and programming. Although the book seems to be aimed at artists wanting to use the computer in their work, the principles taught can be of use to non-artists too. This book is broken down into two parts. The first, "The Basics", covers all aspects of computing in a very general sense. It is just an overview, and if you are such a beginner that you really need to know about electricity, what a microcontroller is, and what an "if statement" is in programming, you are likely going to need sources other than just this book. The last chapter in the section, "Communicating Between Computers" is the best of the basic chapters. This chapter talks about actual connectors and their pins, testing, and protocols and codes. All code shown in this book is in several flavors of the BASIC language, and the book does a pretty good job of getting you started. The section ends with a discussion on the specifics of serial communication on a multimedia computer. Part one has the following chapters and subsections:

Part 1: The Basics
Chapter 1. Electricity
Transduction: Electrical Basics; Electricity versus Electronics How Electricity Flows;
Chapter 2. Shopping
Solderless Breadboard; Microcontrollers; Common Components; Wires; Power Supply; Power Connector; Voltage Regulator; RC Servomotor; Serial Connector; Serial Cable; Clock Crystals; Headers; Project Box; Cable Ties; USB-to-Serial Adaptor; Tools ;Shopping List Bringing It All Back Home;
Chapter 3. Building Circuits
Schematics; Connection Symbols; Power Symbols; Finding Schematics; Breadboards; Where Does the Microcontroller Fit In?; Translating Schematics into Circuits; Using a Multimeter; Soldering; Powering the Breadboard; Be Neat;
Chapter 4. The Microcontroller
"Hello World!" Is the Hard Part; Where Does the Microcontroller Fit In?; Routing Inputs to Outputs; Identifying the Pins of the Microcontroller; Lower-Level Microcontrollers: External Clock; Your First Microcontroller-Based Circuit; Getting Your Program to the Chip; Programming Stamp-Like Modules; Programming Lower-Level Chips ;Debugging;
Chapter 5. Programming
The Good News; Flow Control: How a Computer "Reads" a Program; Loops; If Statements; Variables; Built-In Routines: Subroutines and Functions; Homemade Routines; Advanced Loops: While-Wend and For-Next; Pseudocode; Comments; Debugging; Good Debugging Habits; The Bad News;
Chapter 6. The "Big Four" Schematics, Programs, and Transducers
Digital Input; Digital Output; Analog Output; From Analog in to Analog Out: Scaling Functions; Conclusion;
Chapter 7. Communicating between Computers
Physical Agreement; Timing Agreement; Electrical Agreement; Package Size; Numbers or Letters: Using ASCII; Software for the Microcontroller; Serial Output from a Microcontroller; Testing with an LED; Testing with Terminal Software; Serial Input to a Microcontroller; Serial Freeze and Blocking Functions; Your Private Protocol; Sending Bigger Numbers; Serial Communication on a Multimedia Computer; Conclusion;

In part two, the book demonstrates more advanced methods for accomplishing specific tasks. Most of these methods in part two are just special cases of the basic ideas in part one, and the book makes frequent reference to the circuits and code discussed in part one. There's really nothing here in the realm of specific projects. The book mainly talks about all of the various aspects of hardware and programming that are needed to interface a computer to the physical world. There is quite a bit of code and building-block circuitry shown for simple tasks that you can reuse in any larger project you decide to build.

Chapter 8. Physical Interaction Design, or Techniques for Polite Conversation
The Conversation: Listening, Speaking, and Thinking; Complex Responses; Techniques for Effective Interaction; Conclusion;
Chapter 9. Sensing Movement
Assessing the Problem; How Ranging Sensors Work; Detecting Presence; Determining Position ;Determining Rotation; Speed of Rotation; Video Tracking; Identity;Conclusion;
Chapter 10. Making Movement
Types of Motion, Types of Motors; Characteristics of Motors; Special Electrical Needs of Motors; Controlling Motors; Controlling Stepper Motors; Controlling Solenoids; Basic Mechanics: Converting Motor Motion to Usable Motion; Construction; Conclusion;
Chapter 11. Touch Me
Force-Sensitive Resistors; Flex Sensors; Pressure Sensors; Sensing Touch Using Capacitance Sensors; Off-the-Shelf Touch Interfaces; Sensing Vibrations Using Piezoelectric Sensors; Creating Vibrations; Taking Your Temperature; Cooling Things Off and Heating Them Up; Getting Under Your Skin; Force Feedback; Conclusion;
Chapter 12. More Communication between Devices
Synchronous and Asynchronous Communication; Asynchronous Serial Protocols; Learning a Protocol; RS-232 Boxes; Global Positioning System Data; MIDI; Connecting to the Internet; Connecting over Telephone Lines Using Modems; Special-Function ICs and Modules; Synchronous Serial Protocols; Wireless Serial Communication; Infrared Serial Communication; RF Serial Communication; Conclusion;
Chapter 13. Controlling Sound and Light
Sound; Light; Screen Graphics; Linear Media on a Multimedia Computer; Linear Media on a Microcontroller; Single-Board Computers; Conclusion;
Chapter 14. Managing Multiple Inputs and Outputs
Setting Groups of Pins in Parallel; Bitwise Operations; Running Out of Pins; Resistor Ladders as Analog Input; Row-Column Scanning; Shift Registers; Multiplexers; Latches; Conclusion;

I would say this is a good first book for anyone who is thinking about getting started with adding physical interfaces to their computer.

Product Description
The computer revolution has made it easy for people with little to no technical training to use a computer for such everyday tasks as typing a letter, saving files, or recording data. But what about more imaginative purposes such as starting your car, opening a door, or tracking the contents of your refrigerator? "Physical Computing" will not only change the way you use your computer, it will change the way you think about your computer-how you view its capabilities, how you interact with it, and how you put it to work for you. It's time to bridge the gap between the physical and the virtual-time to use more than just your fingers to interact with your computer. Step outside of the confines of the basic computer and into the broader world of computing.

Review of PgMP: Program Management Professional Exam Study Guide (Paperback)

I'm a trainer in the fields of project management and program management and have found this book as the best not only for PgMP exam preparation but also for learning the basics of program management.
First, for the PgMP Exam:
The best strength of this book is that it follows and covers the official exam specifications by PMI very closely and thoroughly. Yes, if you have time you can go through different references such as, Program Management Standard (which you should go through any way), and relevant parts of other references such asPMBOK Guide 3rd Edition, OPM3 model doc, and some other references to learn the material covered by the PgMP exam as specified in the exam specifications. You can take the relevant pieces of information from these different resources and references and put them together, but it will take a lot of effort. This book integrates these pieces of information together in a seamless fashion. So, it's a great time saver.
Bottom line: this book gives you the body of knowledge that the exam covers. That siad, no book can be a substitute for your experience. To pass the PgMP exam, you need the body of knowledge presented in this book PLUS your experience.
Second, the program management:
I agree with another reviewer that this is the first real book on program management (other than the program management standard, of course) that clearly distinguishes program management from project management and presents the relationship between them in a clear way. The basic concepts of program management are explained in a very clear way and the author offers comprehensive coverage in a cohesive fashion. I love the author's style of presentation. It makes learning easier and fun.

Product Description
In this book, best selling author, Paul Sanghera, offers cohesive, concise, yet comprehensive coverage of all the topics included in the PgMP exam. With a laser sharp focus on the exam objectives, the Study Guide goes beyond just being an "exam cram." The material is presented in a logical learning sequence: a section builds upon previous sections and a chapter on previous chapters. All concepts, simple and complex, are defined and explained when they appear the first time. There is no hopping from topic to topic and no technical jargon without explanation. Because no prior knowledge of program management is assumed, this book will be useful for both: those new to program management, as well as individuals with years of experience. Although the primary purpose of the book is to help you pass the PgMP exam, it will also serve as a great reference for the program managers before and after the exam.

Special Features:

  • Hundreds of review questions with fully explained answers
  • A complete practice exam with fully explained answers
  • The real world scenarios to help you deal with the program management issues in the real world and also to answer the scenario based questions in the exam
  • Notes and tips to highlight the crucial points
  • Exam's Eye View section at the end of each chapter to emphasize the important points from the exam's perspective
  • Key Terms section at the end of each chapter that lists the important terms and concepts introduced in the chapter along with their definitions
  • The exam objectives fully explained before their coverage in each chapter

Review of Adobe Photoshop Forensics (Paperback)

This book is an enjoyable treatment of this topic for the general reader. When reading it from that perspective, it provides a great overview of what any of us might see in our day-to-day lives - altered political photos, actresses on the Photoshop Diet Plan, falsified documents on the internet, etc. Seeing the examples in Baron's book can make us a little more aware and a little more skeptical of what we see in advertisements, newspapers, magazines, and the internet.

This book is not, however, a technical book for the forensics professional - nor does it claim to be. As an expert in imaging forensics, I was careful when reading this book to not judge it from the wrong perspective - this book isn't intended to be a reference for those in my field. But, it still is an enjoyable read with some good information. I didn't care for some of the anecdotal treatments, and I disagreed with some of the content - but since it was written for a broader audience, those became minor points. If this were a technical text, these would have been more important issues.

Does the book belong on the shelf of every forensic image analyst? Probably not - but it will be enjoyed by anyone who is curious about this field, or who wants to be a bit more savvy regarding the photos and documents we are confronted with every day.

Product Description
Thanks to TV's crime scene investigation shows, forensic technology has entered popular culture. Combining puzzle solving and a dramatic storyline, these shows fascinate audiences as high-tech procedures uncover the truths hidden in seemingly insignificant clues. What many people may not realize is that forensic teams also use items they probably have in their own homes - digital cameras, computers, and Photoshop image editing software."Adobe Photoshop Forensics: Sleuths, Truths, and Fauxtography" shows you how Photoshop is used to create many types of fakery and fraud, including scientific, counterfeiting, art, journalism, and political propaganda. You'll discover that with some basic training in Photoshop's manipulation capabilities and a critical eye, you too can see through photographic hoaxes. Follow along as each chapter explores a different genre of real-life frauds, both historical and current, and explains how the fakery was or could be detected. A featured case file in each chapter carefully deconstructs a faked image so you can see the methods and processes followed by the image editing professionals who solve - and the perpetrators who commit - a variety of crimes. Even if you've never considered altering an image or becoming a crime scene investigator, you'll get a kick out of discovering the how and why behind both famous and common acts of image fraud with "Adobe Photoshop Forensics!"

This book was great because it ran through practical things like the utilities to use inWindows to correct registry problems and disk errors.
