About the Author
H. Albert Napier is the professor of Management in the Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University. Authoring over 60 textbooks, he is the Director of the Center of Management of Information Technology, owns a computer consulting and training company, and serves on the Board of Directors of several companies.Most recently he co-authored the Brief and Complete editions of Discovering the Internet for the Shelly Cashman Series.

Ollie N. Rivers has more than 20 years business experience in financial and administrative management and more than 10 years- experience as a corporate trainer. She is a co-author of two e-business textbooks; a contributing author on more than 15 software applications and Internet textbooks; and has developed numerous continuing education seminars for accounting professionals. Ms. Rivers holds an MBA and a BS in Accounting and Management, both from Houston Baptist University.

Stuart W. Wagner manages an IT department for a large private company in Houston, TX. He also managed Web marketing and online strategies at HP, as well as taught a graduate e-business course and executive seminars at the Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University. Mr. Wagner has an MBA from Rice University, which he attended while starting his first dot.com business. He has started up five different dot.com businesses.

This book is a compendium of monographs, each written by an industry expert, that cover all major topic areas in the development life cycle.It is divided into twelve sections ranging from Management and Planning to Post Development Administration.While the monographs have been carefully grouped, and the book benefits from consistent editing to form a coherent volume of practices, some of the topics are either weak or out-of-date.However, there are key topics that represent some of the best thinking in both software engineering and service delivery.Among the ones I found best are:

- All of Section I, covering project communications, requirements management and managing outsourcing risks.

- Section III, especially the emphasis on reuse, objects and metrics.A gem in this section is "Web-Based Customer Self Service: Justifying and Planning Applications".

- "Creating Effective Batch SQL Jobs" in Section IV addresses an often overlooked real world challenge.

- Sections IX (Quality and Productivity Initiatives) and X (Leveraging Staff Resources) are especially relevant to any organization.A highlight in Section X is "A Worksheet for Goals and Skills Assessment".

Review of Systems Analysis and Design, Seventh Edition (Shelly Cashman) (Paperback)

For beginners to Systems Analysis & Design I would recommend this textbook, however do not rely on this for a serious study of Systems Analysis & Design. This book is easy to read, but the "This technique is so great, note - there are some disadvantages" can get annoying at times. Maybe this book could be used as an overview of SAD for managers. Also, the Student Study Guide provided on CD-ROM with the text is not useful for quick review of the text for an exam as each chapter takes up 80 slides and each review of each chapter takes a while to read.
