Review of The Resume Makeover: 50 Common Problems With Resumes and Cover Letters - and How to Fix Them (Paperback)

At first glance, this book looked very helpful. But then I actually followed the book and the resume I ended up with was VERY cluttered. So are most of the examples in the book, which all follow the same look: very little white space, too much information crammed in, overuse of bullets - all leading to a single-spaced, bullet-heavy, text-intensive resume. This book seems to assume that recruiters and others will take the time to read the whole thing when often the opposite is true. Just a glance at the layout may be enough to put them off instead. I just can't recommend it when there are books like "Resumes That Knock 'Em Dead" by Martin Yate or "The Damn Good Resume" by Yana Parker (which got me good jobs for years).

Review of Growing Up Digital: The Rise of the Net Generation (Paperback)

In this book, Don Tapscott discusses the differences between the baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) and the "Net Generation" (those born between 1977 and 1997).In Growing up Digital, Tapscott reminds us that boomers consists of 85 million people in the United States and Canada and then informs us that the Net Generation now encompasses 88 million people. So not only are these kids more technologically savvy than the rest of us, they outnumber us also.Tapscott states, "To them the digital technology is no more intimidating than a VCR or toaster. For the first time in history, children are more comfortable, knowledgeable and literate than their parents about an innovation central to society."With this in mind, it is probably a good thing I read this book.

Interestingly, I have two teenage children who fit into the category of Net Generation kids, but who do not have as much in common with the kids described in the book as Tapscott would lead you to believe. The children I know in this age-group are computer literate, do have cyber-dates, are quite capable of multi-tasking, completing research via the net, and ordering products on-line.However, that is where the similarity ends.

Tapscott describes a world where children work for pay creating web sites; expect to be included in the decision-making of major purchases with their parents, (because the children have been able to download the product research that their parents could not), and speak at conferences on the use of technology.I believe there are many instances in the book where Tapscott suggests a behavior that appears more precocious than intelligent.Even given this, the book is very interesting, but at times reads more like science fiction. This is especially true when Tapscott talks about a "cyber Niki" running around the web searching for the best buys or when he gives an example of being able to order his bread from the Stone Mill bakery with just the ingredients he wants. At times, it is hard to tell whether this is currently available via the web or, if it is all part of a future vision.

Because much of the information for this book came from a chat room for teens and pre-teens called "FreeZone" it tends to preclude those children of the same age who are not growing up digital or, who have limited access to this medium. Moreover, if this is so, are we any wiser to the behaviors and thought processes of the majority of American children?I am not so sure.According to Mr. Tapscott we are.He states that, "This book is based on the belief that we can learn much about a whole generation which is in the process of embracing the new media from the children who are most advanced in their adoption of this technology."Maybe he is right, because the information gleaned from this particular group of kids is rather enlightening.

In the book, Tapscott discusses the different ways N-Gens learn, play and work.Supposedly, this group prefers interactive entertainment (video games and web surfing) to passive entertainment (television). In fact, Tapscott estimates that by the year 2000 children will be watching 100 hours less television per year than they were in 1997.Based on discussions with the kids in FreeZone, it appears that N-Gen children prefer to play video games, and spend time on the web because they can control what they see rather than having content pushed at them.Tapscott believes that this is actually good, not bad, as many would have us believe. This is probably true, because in order to navigate the web, you must be able to read and write. In the chapter on N-Gen learning, Tapscott discusses that these children will want to learn in an interactive mode rather than a broadcast mode.One- way to do this would be for these children to discover information on their own via the web instead of listening to lectures. And, when it comes to the work environment, watch out, "Just like the boomers in Michael Dell's company who are perceived as losers if they aren't media-savvy and new-enterprise-comfortable, boomers in the new economy will be left behind as the N-Gen tsunami rolls into the workforce. The message:boomers, get going and learn from the children."According to this, the workplace of the future will be highly technical and if we are not prepared, the N-Gens will leave us behind.

With so many kids already working in technology fields, how should colleges and universities prepare?Well one thing is certain, as long as kids feel the need to go to college to advance within an organization we are okay. The following quote from an 18 year old makes this perfectly clear. He states:"Right now the Internet department is doing some shuffling and I could easily become a full-time employee. My boss loves me and she knows I am more than capable for the help line, but without some kind of college degree I would not go far in the organization.I hope to return in four years."Let us all keep them thinking this way and maybe we can keep our jobs.

Overall, I found this to be an excellent book and feel it may be helpful for many who are dealing with or may soon be dealing with these kids, especially the techno-savvy ones.

Review of The Whole Brain Business Book (Hardcover)

Ned Herrmann's book, "The Whole Brain Business Book", deserves a five star rating.Herrmann has written an excellent book, I only wish I had read it seven years ago when I first ventured out in the world to start my own business. It is a must read for anyone who is planning on startingtheir own business, has a startup business, or has decision makingresponsibilities in an organization. The Whole Brain Business Book is veryeasy to read and is written in a very instructive manner. The authorprovides many examples from his research and he uses a number of diagramsthat are very useful in determining a company's and/or one's personalmanagement style, in addition to some insight as to how one thinks, makesdecision and work together with other people.A number of exercises andstep by step instructions are provided to assist readers in learning how tomake decisions that incorporate all of the brain's functions.I found somevery valuable information in this book that I will use to enhance mydecision-making process.Herrmann has made me stop and re-evaluate some ofthe ways I approach a number of business issues.

This book is dividedinto five dynamic sections; each section is packed with methodologies, examples and exercises for utilizing Herrmann's concept.Herrmann providessome hard evidence to support his Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument(HBDI) tool.HBDI is an assessment tool that is uses to determine whatdrives the way one thinks and makes decisions.HBDI utilizes fourquadrants (styles), Organizer, Personalizer or Visualizer, each quadrantrepresented by a letter A-D.Herrmann believes that we make decisionsbased on some combination of these four thinking styles and thatcultivating these styles and utilizing the resulting energy is the key toproductivity and creativity in business.

Herrmann presents some veryinteresting information about entrepreneurals, and how they rank based onhis HBDI tool.He expands this discussion by pointing out the differencebetween a entrepreneural, one who works for him/herself and aintrapreneural, one who works for a company.Herrmann discusses risktaking and the importance in learning from failure. He pursues thisfurther by describing the type of management that nurtures creativity andsets the stage for innovative thinking. Herrmann discussescharacteristics of people who are on the outer realm, (he calls themMavericks) and how and why they are so successful (he uses Tom Peters andDavid Letterman as examples). He touches on process reengineering, and howit is generally initiated based on cost savings versus change in workprocesses. In addition, he provides some interesting research dataregarding CEO's and how they ranked a list of sixteen primary workelements. In the final chapter, Herrmann presents some helpful steps forbecoming a Whole Brained Businessperson.

Product Description
The Whole Brain Business Book is the long-awaited culmination of Ned Herrmann's highly respected and extensive research and testing. In it, he presents his four-quadrant model of the brain and the corresponding thinking styles: logician, organizer, communicator, and visionary. Most people and organizations, he demonstrates, are stuck in a ``brain rut'' because their work is dominated by just one mode. Through highly practical explorations and exercises, he shows individuals and organizations how to harness the power of the whole brain. Readers will use The Whole Brain Business Book to expand their own thinking styles--to create and manage Whole Brain Teams--and to introduce new levels of flexibility and innovation into the corporate culture. It will show them how organizations like DuPont and GE use their ``whole brain'' orientation to thrive and profit in times of chaos--and it will help them to do the same.

Review of The Inflammation-Free Diet Plan (Paperback)

Considering the inflammatory nature of the average American diet, the dietary recommendations in this book are a huge step in the right direction. Many of the health problems that are prevalent in our society are at least partially caused by inflammation (e.g. heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, arthritis). The author explains that many factors determine whether a particular food works in your body to fight or promote inflammation. Some of these factors include glycemic load, fat composition, antioxidant and vitamin content. She has created a formula that she uses to rate individual foods as to how inflammatory or anti-inflammatory they are.

About one third of the book is devoted to charts that rate individual foods. Another third is devoted to recipes and meal planning. The other third explains the factors that cause inflammation and how the diet plan works. Your goal in the diet is to make sure that all the foods you consume during a single day have an overall anti-inflammatory effect (by adding up the individual ratings of each food), and that you don't consume more than 65 grams of fat (55 grams for weight loss). It is a simple concept, but the calculations could be quite time-consuming.The information is useful even if you choose not to do the calculations.

There are some areas where I feel the author has fallen short. She doesn't mention the inflammatory xeno-estrogens in pesticides that also accumulate in animal fat. When she lists beef as an anti-inflammatory meat she doesn't mention whether she has taken into account all the hormones that are fed to cattle and end up being stored in beef fat. Surprisingly, blueberries are rated as slightly inflammatory. This seems odd since a cup of blueberries has a glycemic load of 5, which is extremely low, and blueberries contain more antioxidants than almost any other fruit or vegetable. Several other fruits and vegetables with low glycemic loads and lots of antioxidants (such as black beans) were also rated as slightly inflammatory.

Overall, there is a lot of useful information here that can be used to improve your diet and your health.Whether you have inflammation-related disease or not, this book can help you make healthy choices.
