Review of Online Investing Bible (Bible (Wiley)) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

This fine (and fat) book is just the thing for people who currently trade online or those who are considering it. It provides a nice assortment of screen shots of useful sites to become familiar with and concludes each chapter with a concise summary in list format. The book is 823 pages long but still doesn't go far enough on specialist topics. But this book is a comprehensive and carefully constructed primer on the entire waterfront from Stocks to Bonds to Mutual Funds and of course to the particulars and precautions of setting up an account, making trades, gathering timely information etc. I like that it doesn't take an AOL-centric point of view because that would be too limiting. If you are interested in Online Investing, buy this book and supplement it with a subscription to "Online Investing" magazine (monthly) which would bring you up to date on new developments and also cover special topics with more depth.

Product Description
Online investing is a hot topic right now, but it's easy to get in over your head quickly without enough know-how in this volatile market. Review of Managing Risk (Paperback)

"A central argument of this book is that both theoretical and practical approaches to the three subject areas - management, risk and change - are not only linked but also convergent... [But]...these 'obvious' overlaps and interactions are not yet treated generally in a holistic way."

This quotation is from Chapter 9 'A Fuzzy Convergence', which summarises the main arguments and introduces the case studies that make up the second half of the book. All managers would benefit from reading this chapter and Chapter 16 'A management Agenda', even if they decide to leave the rest of the book for 'the experts'. However, they are also likely to find material to interest them among the case studies - for example Chapter 15 is a long and very thorough study of a health system 'UK health authorities struggle to survive'.

For those with a direct responsibility for managing risk - which, after all, includes all senior managers, if not everyone with a managerial responsibility - the book is an invaluable guide to the details of risk management and what 'risk' encompasses, as well as to the cultural, technological, environmental and other linkages that make up the linked phenomena of risk and their management. As the authors point out:

"...integration of different risk management functions, disciplines and activities remains weak or non-existent in most organizations."

The book looks systemically at the whole process of strategic direction setting and change management from the perspective of recognising, accepting and managing risk. It is a perspective that is too often neglected, sometimes with the sorts of horrendous consequences spelled out in some of the case studies.

The book is thorough, well set out and easy to reference and not too technical in its presentation. It deserves a place in every organisation.

Product Description
This book offers a fresh perspective on the convergence of approaches to managing risk and introduces new developments in current thinking. Managing Risk pioneers an integrative and holistic approach to managing risk. Practitioners now increasingly acknowledge that risk cannot be dealt with effectively in a compartmentalised way. There is a need to introduce a broader perspective to the subject of risk and to recognise that approaches towards managing risk are beginning to converge.

Review of The Equity Trader Course (Wiley Trading) (Hardcover)

Seat-of-the-pants trading is history.Data from Neonet, an agency broker, show that over 28 percent of trades in U.S. stock markets are the result of automated trading strategies. The Boston-based Tabb Group forecasts 34 percent annual growth in global money managers' use of trading algorithms.

So, in an industry increasingly governed by computerization, algorithmic trading, and fully electronic markets, an appreciation of the theory and operations of equity trading is critically important.A new book from Bruce Weber, Professor of Information Management at London Business School, along with Professor Robert A. Schwartz of Baruch College in New York, and Reto Francioni, CEO of Deutsche Börse, offers a comprehensive course in equity trading for professional and serious independent traders.

The world's equity trading markets are large, complicated, and constantly evolving. In this new book, The Equity Trader Course, Professor Weber and his co-authors manage to give a comprehensive overview of the final, critical step in turning market ideas into realized profits.Even in the richest and deepest markets in the world, liquidity is costly, and hidden trading costs can erode profits.Salient advice in the book covers how to place orders optimally, how to react to volatility, and ways to avoid moving the market when buying or selling.

The book includes insights into trading, liquidity pools, and markets, and tools to apply when using auctions, submitting limit orders, and measuring trader performance. The role of technical analysis and the advantages of algorithmic trading are covered. Each chapter of the book teaches both novice and experienced traders how to be adaptive and successful in their purchasing and selling decisions. The Equity Trader Course comes with a companion CD containing the TraderEx simulation, which walks readers through the dynamics of various market structures, and the mechanics of trading - from entering orders to monitoring the market, and profitably exiting a position.

Review of Option Pricing Models and Volatility Using Excel-VBA (Wiley Finance) (Paperback)

This book explains how to implement option pricing models using Excel-VBA. This is the best book for any software engineer who wants to become a financial engineer. This book is for car mechanics not for users who just want to get "Oil Change".

Product Description
Praise for Option Pricing Models & Volatility Using Excel-VBA

"Excel is already a great pedagogical tool for teaching option valuation and risk management. But the VBA routines in this book elevate Excel to an industrial-strength financial engineering toolbox. I have no doubt that it will become hugely successful as a reference for option traders and risk managers."
--Peter Christoffersen, Associate Professor of Finance, Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University

"This book is filled with methodology and techniques on how to implement option pricing and volatility models in VBA. The book takes an in-depth look into how to implement the Heston and Heston and Nandi models and includes an entire chapter on parameter estimation, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Everyone interested in derivatives should have this book in their personal library."
--Espen Gaarder Haug, option trader, philosopher, nd author of Derivatives Models on Models

"I am impressed. This is an important book because it is the first book to cover the modern generation of option models, including stochastic volatility and GARCH."
--Steven L. Heston, Assistant Professor of Finance, R.H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland

Review of Volatility Trading, + CD-ROM (Wiley Trading) (Hardcover)

Over the course of my career I have come to own literally hundreds of books about derivatives pricing and trading. Few of these books manage to communicate the essence of what a professional derivatives trader needs to do to be successful. Volatility Trading is truly rare in that it presents a framework for analysis that is supported by a clear, well-defined trading philosophy: systematically find an edge and learn how to exploit it correctly. It takes a lot of experience, time, and energy to know - and I mean really know - what Sinclair shares in this book.

I found the chapter on volatility measurement and forecasting to be particularly useful. Few options traders take the time to understand the efficiency of their volatility estimators. Even fewer could clearly communicate that what we need is a view on the volatility distribution rather than a point forecast when we are trading volatility.

The author's mix of trading philosophy, quantitative intuition, and obvious trading experience is refreshing. The straight-forward no nonsense writing style also makes the book very readable. I would recommend this book to any quantitatively-minded trader. The chapter on money-management alone is easily worth the price of the book.

Product Description
In Volatility Trading, Sinclair offers you a quantitative model for measuring volatility in order to gain an edge in your everyday option trading endeavors. With an accessible, straightforward approach. He guides traders through the basics of option pricing, volatility measurement, hedging, money management, and trade evaluation. In addition, Sinclair explains the often-overlooked psychological aspects of trading, revealing both how behavioral psychology can create market conditions traders can take advantage of-and how it can lead them astray. Psychological biases, he asserts, are probably the drivers behind most sources of edge available to a volatility trader.

Your goal, Sinclair explains, must be clearly defined and easily expressed-if you cannot explain it in one sentence, you probably aren't completely clear about what it is. The same applies to your statistical edge. If you do not know exactly what your edge is, you shouldn't trade. He shows how, in addition to the numerical evaluation of a potential trade, you should be able to identify and evaluate the reason why implied volatility is priced where it is, that is, why an edge exists. This means it is also necessary to be on top of recent news stories, sector trends, and behavioral psychology. Finally, Sinclair underscores why trades need to be sized correctly, which means that each trade is evaluated according to its projected return and risk in the overall context of your goals.

As the author concludes, while we also need to pay attention to seemingly mundane things like having good execution software, a comfortable office, and getting enough sleep, it is knowledge that is the ultimate source of edge. So, all else being equal, the trader with the greater knowledge will be the more successful. This book, and its companion CD-ROM, will provide that knowledge. The CD-ROM includes spreadsheets designed to help you forecast volatility and evaluate trades together with simulation engines.

Review of Forex Conquered: High Probability Systems and Strategies for Active Traders (Wiley Trading) (Hardcover)

I would agree with Ctrader that this book is not good at all.The CD is a joke as the so called calculators are available for FREE on the internet, deceiving as the "calculators" are webbased and FREE. Unfortunately, once you open the CD you cannot return the book. The 3 systems are worthless, MA and MA of Pivot Point crossovers. A joke. The Fibonacci part, well the author actually missapplies these lines, on the wrong leg, LOL, applied on the current leg instead of on the leg being retraced. A joke. You could learn more for free on the internet from people that actually know how to apply what this author is trying, but not succeeding, in explaining. It is a shame the Wiley would let this author write this book and to allow this nonsense to be published. Shameful way to steal people's money, since once you open the CD slab you cannot return the book.

Review of Complete Idiots Guide to Paint Shop Pro 7 (Complete Idiot's Guide) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

As a long-time fan and user of Paint Shop Pro, I was delighted to see all the new bells, whistles and innovations in Version 7, but overwhelmed by the prospect of learning everything quickly enough while maintaining my enthusiasm.I did a lot of research before deciding on this book--especially since I usually turn to The Dummies Guides for help. However, in reading reviews of the many books on PSP 7 (both here on Amazon, and elsewhere,) Nat Gertler's Idiot's Guide was consistently praised and overall, more highly regarded than the others...so I decided to trust the opinions of the real folks like me who use this book.I was *not* disappointed. As soon as I unwrapped the book, I was in front of the computer exploring and (finally) understanding things that I hadn't been able to figure out on my own.

The text is easy to read, has good illustrations and tutorials, a sense of humor, and best of all, it's written in a lean, no nonsense style that lets me get right down to the business of creating.

Review of Trading Chaos: Maximize Profits with Proven Technical Techniques (A Marketplace Book) (Hardcover)

This book is not about chaos theory, nor trading chaos, but a trading book with the first 95 pages about trading psychology, primarily Zen and Tao based, and the rest 133 pages of a trading system that comes with "Metastock". As a trading book fan and a Chinese who know Zen and Tao well, I do like the first part of it as food for thought, and definitely not as reading material to sharpen my trading edge. I doubt whether the very vague Zen or Tao approach taken by the author can be well understood and practised by western traders. Furthermore, I agree with a previous reviewer that the "trade with the trend/flow" concept preached by the author contradict a little bit with his own quasi-countertrend system presented in the second part. So, I suggest those who dont have access to Metastock nor Omega Tradestation facilities should give it a pass. It's definitely not a smart way of investing if one puts money on something that does you little good.

Product Description
Book DescriptionPublished in 1995, the bestselling first edition of Trading Chaos provided readers with the most practical and comprehensive guide for applying chaos theory to the real world of trading and investing. But today, the markets are different than they were even a few years ago. So with fresh research in hand, coauthors Bill Williams and Justine Gregory-Williams have updated their profitable methods and provide new techniques to help you take profits from the markets.

Trading Chaos, Second Edition will not only show you how to anticipate, recognize, and react to impending bull and bear market conditions, it will also introduce you to the latest findings in physics and psychology as applied to various markets--stock, bond, futures, indexes, and many others.

The first portion of this book is devoted to understanding how the rewards you'll acquire in trading and investing are determined by what is happening inside of you. By digging through some very interesting and deep psychological principles, you can become a profitable "trade/vestor"--using technical techniques for good short-term entries and exits, but also holding on to long-term investments when the opportunity presents itself. Trading Chaos, Second Edition will help you build a solid psychological foundation before you enter the markets.

After you've learned how to gain an inner analytic edge, the authors will show you how the application of self-knowledge will improve your bottom line. Through numerous charts, checklists, and examples, you'll be introduced to proven techniques that can make the unpredictable understandable and make your journey into the markets more profitable. You'll learn how to:

Sharpen entries and exits, and reduce whiplashes with the powerful "Alligator" indicator Get into a new trend very early with proper use of the "First Wise Man" Add on aggressively after your first entry using the "Second Wise Man" with the help of the Awesome Oscillator (AO) Make fractal breakout trades with the "Third Wise Man"--these almost guarantee profitable follow-through on a trade

In this early part of the twenty-first century, you have a choice to either be a part of the last generation of traders and investors using linear (ineffective) techniques or the first generation using effective nonlinear (chaotic) techniques. By reading the Second Edition of Trading Chaos, you'll learn how you can take your trading skills to the next level and make steady profits in any marke
