Review of Designing and Implementing Linux Firewalls with QoS using netfilter, iproute2, NAT and L7-filter (Paperback)

If you like opensource, QoS, Firewalls... this book would be what you need.

If you are netadmin, sysadmin or you are an IT guy and learn this book, you can limit p2p/bittorrent traffic, guarantee bandwith for some services like http, ftp, voip, etc. (QoS), you can protect your network with firewalls.

First in chapter 1 we learn about Networking Fundamentals, then in chapter 2, about Security Threats in every OSI layer. After that we are ready to learn about basis of netfilter and iproute (Firewall and QoS).

In next chapters, show us how to do layer 7 filtering, practical QoS and more advanced things. Then we apply this knowledge in a very practical serie of scenerios that come later in the book.

Very good book, I recomend this to you.

Product Description
Learn how to secure your system and implement QoS using real-world scenarios for networks of all sizes
  • Implementing Packet filtering, NAT, bandwidth shaping, packet prioritization using netfilter/iptables, iproute2, Class Based Queuing (CBQ) and Hierarchical Token Bucket (HTB)
  • Designing and implementing 5 real-world firewalls and QoS scenarios ranging from small SOHO offices to a large scale ISP network that spans many cities
  • Building intelligent networks by marking, queuing, and prioritizing different types of traffic

In Detail

Firewalls are used to protect your network from the outside world. Using a Linux firewall, you can do a lot more than just filtering packets. This book shows you how to implement Linux firewalls and Quality of Service using practical examples from very small to very large networks.

After giving us a background of network security, the book moves on to explain the basic technologies we will work with, namely netfilter, iproute2, NAT and l7-filter. These form the crux of building Linux firewalls and QOS. The later part of the book covers 5 real-world networks for which we design the security policies, build the firewall, setup the script, and verify our installation. Providing only necessary theoretical background, the book takes a practical approach, presenting case studies and plenty of illustrative examples.

Approach

The author draws on his experience to offer the reader valuable advice on the best practices.Providing only necessary theoretical background, the book takes a practical approach, presenting case studies and plenty of illustrative examples.

Who this book is written for?

This book is aimed at Linux Network administrators<!--[if !supportAnnotations]-- with some understanding of Linux security threats and issues, or any one interested in securing their systems behind a firewall. Basic knowledge of Linux is presumed but other than that this book shows you how to do the rest, from configuring your system to dealing with security breaches.

About the Author
Lucian Gheorghe

Lucian Gheorghe has just joined the Global NOC of Interoute, Europe's largest voice and data network provider. Before Interoute, he was working as a senior network engineer for Globtel Internet, a significant Internet and Telephony Services Provider to the Romanian market He has been working with Linux for more than 8 years putting a strong accent on security for protecting vital data from hackers and ensuring good quality services for internet customers. Moving to VoIP services he had to focus even more on security as sensitive billing data is most often stored on servers with public IP addresses. He has been studying QoS implementations on Linux to build different types of services for IP customers and also to deliver good quality for them and for VoIP over the public internet. Lucian has also been programming with Perl, PHP and Smarty for over 5 years mostly developing in-house management interfaces for IP and VoIP services.

Review of Red Hat Linux 7.1 Bible (Paperback)

I found this book to be pretty much a rerun of previous editions. The primary reason I bought this "Linux 7.1 Bible" is that by the name I thought it would cover this Linux release including all new additions. The main thing I was looking for was a good explantion of iptables and how to correctly use them since this is supposed to replace ipchains and be much more powerful. What I found was the author mentions that iptables is the newest firewall configuration tool and is to replace ipchains and here's the website for the How To (which I had already visited) and in this book we'll explain once again how to setup ipchains (which he just said was being replaced). If you don't have other books on installing and setting up previous versions of Linux this book might do, but if you want information on the new additions to the 7.x versions don't waste your money like I did.

Review of Complete Idiot's Guide to UNIX (The Complete Idiot's Guide) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

This is a very well written book as an intro to Unix. I know just about nothing on Unix and wanted to learn what Unix is about. After finishing this book, I found myself understanding how and what Unix is. It usessimple language to explain the OS to you instead of technical terms ofwhich leaves you scratching your head in sheer frustration. I found it veryenjoyable reading about how Unix was born and the different flavors of Unixout there. It also teaches you the basic shell commands to get around theOS. After finishing this book and practicing what you've learned in thebook, you're definitely able to move around a little bit better on Unixthan before. It won't turn you into an expert by any means but it will giveyou a good foundation for you to head toward that direction. I am usuallyvery skeptical about the Idiot or Dummy book series but this one is anexception to the rule. This is not one of those books which leaves youcompletely exhausted for you feel the task of learning Unix is going to bebeyond you. It leaves you feeling that Unix isn't all that tough. The bookdoes not go into details about any of the Unix flavors and what each istruly about, the security features or why one might be more suitable forcertain tasks you might want to do.

Review of Red Hat Linux 9 Bible (Paperback)

I have been attempting redhat since release 6.1 have never come across a good reference manual, bought over 6 books, today finally someone has taken the initiative to write a well documented manual, anything that you can think of is pretty much covered in the book, I best like the guidance on how to setup redhat to perform according to certain situations, the writer simply puts it across in english.

+980 pages of information, the book was so simple to read I managed to complete it in 2 days.

Alot of other boks simply point to online references this book is what you require, you will be referring to it on daily basis, I think the best approach is to read the whole book first then go through it once again step by step chapter by chapter.

The most important aspects of securing the server the network setups, mysql apache and sendmail all covered as well as non bias information to other 3rd party applications the writer simply puts across his point of view and lets you decide from the option paths yo want to take.

Kudus to the writer simply the best buy.

Review of Linux Game Programming w/CD (Prima Tech's Game Development) (Paperback)

I've bought every book in the series so far, this is by far the worst book I've ever owned.I'm tired of picking up game programming books that claim to teach game programming but they don't even create a working game.I bought this book for Linux game programming exposure and because it promised to having in-dept coverage of AI.Major areas of AI are basically defined and the only source code that is mentioned / supplied on the cd is for a template for creating a counter-strike bot.The author has a very good writing style because I was lured into reading most of the book; however, the book should actually do what it says and at least create a 2D / 3D shooter of some sort rather then just a hand full of demos. This book should have never been published on the basis that it tries to cover way too much which results in chapters that do nothing more then just cover a broad definition of the topic at hand.

Product Description
Linux Game Programming offers Linux users the information they need to create a game using their OS of choice. This is the only book that addresses game development for the Linux community on the market today.Featuring an overview of the game development cycle, as well as information on using tools and libraries, developing graphics applications, and adding extras such as sound, this book provides clear, concise information on developing games for and with the Linux OS.Linux Game Programming is perfect for both experienced developers and programmers or those hobbyists who are curious to see what can be accomplished with the Linux platform. Series editor André LaMothe has published numerous magazine articles and is an international best-selling author with over six game programming and 3D graphics titles to his credit. He has been active in the computing industry for more than twenty years, during which he created one of the world's first commercially available virtual reality games, CyberGate.André is also the founder and CEO of Xtreme Games LLC.
