Review of Office XP for Law Firms (Paperback)

I was greatly disappointed with this book. While it may be a nice reference to MS Office, its uniqueness for the legal aspect was poor. I expected to see some key elements related to the specifics of legal writing (setting up specific styles, conventions and fonts - cf. The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation). I was not interesed in the stuff on the CD and the one Word document I looked at --"Sample pleading.dot" -- used the tab to align text! It would have been far more effective using a table or even the margins. I sure wasted my money on this thing as I am proficient in Word (above in the other MS Office products). I had hoped not to have to reinvent the wheel, but I think I can do a much better job on my own.

Review of The Web Page Design Cookbook: All the Ingredients You Need to Create 5-Star Web Pages (Paperback)

I'm not a web developer or designer by any stretch of the imagination, but I do a lot of HTML page development and maintenance, with some light javascript programming thrown in on my own web site.I started in January 2000 with an account for a personal page, Notepad.exe and a quick reference card.I learned basic HTML in the process, but also created an eyesore. As my technical skills evolved the ugliness of my creation remained the same. I swallowed my pride and got this book.It was one of the best purchases I ever made.

For a total beginner this is a good first book because it steps you through creating your first page, then adding features and using advanced HTML as you progress. For someone who is already proficient with HTML and has developed a few pages, you may find something useful in the advanced techniques and will certainly receive an education in good web page design. Some of the highlights of the authors' approach to design are in the examples. The accompanying CD ROM has every example in HTML format so you can see how they will display in your particular browser brand and version, and you can look at the code and play with it to see how your changes will display. This alone is a real time saver, and it makes this book all the more useful.

If you are a technical writer the examples for web pages that provide how-to procedures, troubleshooting procedures, on-line lessons and survey forms reflect good page design and the example files on the CD ROM can be immediately used as templates.

The only thing that detracts from this book is that it's woefully out of date. Some of the tools provided on the CD ROM are ancient, as are the discussions on various desktop operating systems. For example, Windows 95 was not even on the market when this book went to press and the authors' discussion on network issues were educated guesses. Now the network facilities built into desktop operating systems are so transparent that this section of the book can be safely ignored. However, we also live in a world where HTML has evolved to version 4, cascading style sheets are used on many sites (not to mention Macromedia Flash, Active Server Pages, more sophisticated java and javascript, etc.), rendering a lot of the technical aspects of this book quaint. On the other hand, that might not be such a bad thing since the best web pages are simple and more focused on design instead of a bunch of technical razzle-dazzle.But, I would love to see this book updated to reflect contemporary tools and techniques for web page design because I like the way the authors' impart their knowledge. This book would make an excellent text for a web design 101 class, and is one of the best for those of us who play around with this stuff.I'm subtracting a star because the book sorely needs to be updated, but am still giving it my highest recommendation.

Product Description
Horton is well-known for his design and layout technique and this book is no exception. Each example is presented as a two-page spread with the finished product facing the HTML coding that produced it. Readers will be able to type, cut and paste their way to create functional, ergonomically correct and aesthetically appealing Web pages that can be used across all platforms. The accompanying CD-ROM includes approximately 200 Web-page components, 25 complete Web pages, 50 Web-page clusters, 100 icons and 25 graphics Web pages.

Review of The Everything Internet Book: Talk to Your Friends, Shop for Bargains, Find the Information You Need, and Get Free, Cool Stuff Online (Everything Series) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

It is quite unusual to find a book on the Internet written by someone for whom english is not a second language. And it is even more unusual for an author to not assume that you are already well-versed in the subject.Especially useful is McDonnell's section on search engines, which liststheir websites and explains how to use them. For example, she tells you howto "...monitor what's being said about your favorite hot topic in thethousands of discussion groups on the Internet... you can easily search bysubject, newsgroup name, date, or writer of the posted messages."I keep this book right next to my computer and use it almost every day.

Review of IBM WebSphere Portal Primer (Websphere Software) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I'm reading the 2nd edition, which says on the cover, "Fully updated for V5.1". I think some of the reviews appearing here may be referring to the 1st edition when they complain that it only covers V4.Furthermore, there is confusion among reviewersbetween the versioning of WPS (Web Portal Server)versus the versioning of WAS (Web Application Server). The latest version of WPS is 5.1 while the latest version of WAS (now renamed to "Rational") is 6.0.The book covers WPS 5.1 as well as both WAS 5.1.x and WAS 6.0.So, it is completely up to date as far as I can tell.In my opinion the complaints that the book only covers v4 or v5 are based on a misunderstanding of versioning and should not be considered.

Chapters 1 and 2 were at a high level and very well written, considering the enormous complexity involved in putting so many different products under the same umbrella and making them appear unified. It makes one a little sympathetic for the IBM architects who have to make a logical, consistent set of diagrams out of all the disparate products IBM offers including Lotus and Domino.

Chapter however 3 was not pleasant to read.It gives instructions for installingWebsphere Portal on Windows, Unix, and Linux with all sorts of variations. Many concepts that it would have been nice to have had explained, weren't.For example, why is the author all of a sudden saying an http server is required and that the IBM http server will be used in the examples?Isn't there an http server embedded somewhere already in the Websphere Applications Server?A paragraph of explanation would have helped to clear that up.And the expertise in LDAP servers that chapter three presupposes is not necessarily true of all readers.

Chapter 3 as it continued, increasingly dispensed entirely with explanations and became, essentially, long lists of commands to type in with little explanation of why the commands were necessary or what they actually did.By the time the chapter ended, one could not help but feel intimidated as to the incredible amount of memorization and knowledge and experience required to understand the complete installation of the product in a corporate setting.

Chapter 4, entitled "Customizing the Portal", is very readable and important because it explains the basics of portals such as skins, themes, pages, columns, rows, etc. There is a terrible problem with pages 135 to 144 unfortunately. Those pages contain nothing but faulty pictures of the themes and skins that come with the default installation. All of the pictures look the same and can barely be seen. This is not the authors' fault but the fault of whoever typeset the book.Shame on that person. They have ruined what would have been a very helpful portion.Still, chapter 4 is a valuable and useful chapter, entirely appropriate for a "primer".

Chapter 5, "Personalizing The Portlal", is mind-numbing but essential reading. It introduces all the concepts necessary to personalize a portal/portlet and then steps you through from start to finish the creation and deployment of a personalized portlet. It requires that you have WSADS 5.x installed because they step you through installing a jsp/html editing feature that has beem removed from WSADS but is needed to create personalized portlets. So, they explain how to manually re-activate it from the command line.It can only be re-activated in WSADS 5.x.They say once you see how it's done in WSADs 5.x you can then do it yourself without the enhanced editor in Rational v6.If you are like me and have both of those installed on your pc, you hit the lottery and will find this chapter very useful. If you only have Rational v6 it will be very frustrating. It's a scary chapter and makes you wonder if anyone on planet earth could ever actually use this monster of a product. But if you work in a corporation that uses IBM Websphere Portal you *know* it does actually work, so just take a deep breath and read the entire chapter. It's very well written, especially considering how hard it is to try to make it seem as if a business analyst could do many of the tasks in this chapter that seem to require quite a bit of knowledge of java.

Chapter 6 explains how to write, configure, and deploy a portlet. The first 34 pages cover the proprietary IBM portlet API, and the last 13 pages cover cover the JSR-168 portlet API. There is a lot of information to cover, and it all presupposes the reader is familiar with the J2EE servlet creation methodology.Realistically, it is this chapter that is the most important for a java programmer who actually has to write portlets, and conversely this might be the least important chapter to operations staff who probably don't know java and don't need to for their job function. It's too much to read this chapter in one sitting, lest the concepts of the proprietary IBM portlet API get confused in one's mind with the concepts of the JSR-168 portlet API.All in all, it's a very good chapter. There was only one misprint that really vexes, which is on page 239 where reference is made to a code example in figure 6.8 that supposedly shows instantiating a DefaultPortletMessage object. There is no such instantiation in that figure, alas, and in such a difficult chapter that is annoying because realizing the mistake breaks mental concentration.

The second part of chapter 6 on the JSR-168 portlet API is helpful both in explaining the JSR-168 API as well as forcing the authors to better explain the IBM proprietary portlet API by comparing and contrasting the two.Considering the complexity and the subtleties of portlet programming, this chapter did an excellent job.The final paragraph states, "The subject of portlet programming alone could fill a book."It then recommends a book called, "Programming Portlets" by Ron Lynn, Joey Bernal, and Peter Blinstrubas (2005; MC Press).

Chapter 7, "Portal Gatekeeper", is devoted to security. It is too dense to be read in one sitting. It begins with the big picture/architecture of how security can be maintained in various LDAPs or in a combination of LDAP and rdbms, etc. and just when it seems like the chapter should end, it begins with a very specific example of configuring an example company with three departments. There is one minor misprint in the example, which is easy to pick out with a clear head but in the thick of reading the chapter can make the reader lose confidence the chapter is comprehensible. (A second reading after a good night's sleep is recommended). In between these two sections there are several pages of raw listings of two XML configuation files. All in all it's a mentally difficult chapter to comprehend. The chapter continues with more detail on vaults and vault segments, etc., etc., but by the end of the chapter when everything that can be said has been said, one feels much, much more informed on the subject of websphere portal security.

Chapter 8, "Portal and Beyond," begins with twenty pages covering portal search capabilities. It's a nearly impossible task to cover the subject that quickly, and you have to hand it to the author for, gamely, making the attempt. The next 24 pages cover Site Analytics, which is a vast subject. It feels like a different author wrote this second section of the chapter. The detailed examples with screenshots culminate by showing a report that is spectacular until you look closer and realize it only shows statistics on one "hit" on a test web site. The third section of chapter 8, "Process Portals", is the worst written section of the entire book, so far. It's like something a jaded technical writer might compose in a Dilbert cartoon for an incomprehensible technical feature that the marketing department insisted on adding. The forth section of chapter 8, "Websphere Portal Application Integrator", takes the mantle from section three and is definately the worst, most cynically written section of the book, so far.The closing one page essay of the chapter, "Door Closing", is brilliant, a marketing masterpiece. It was obviously polished and rewritten many times by a senior writer.

Chapter 9, "Portal Content and Collaboration", continues in the tradition of Chapter 8 by exploring more "checkmark" features. The chapter 9 features seem to have been added by the IBM marketing department, Lotus/Domino division. It becomes increasingly apparant as one reads further into this book that production use of IBM WebSphere Portal requires hiring IBM consultants and programmers to actually get the beast installed and configured. The final paragraph of chapter 9, "Door Closings", is more openly transparant and far less clever than it's brilliant chapter 8 counterpart.

Chapter 10, "Portal Crossing", begins with 24 pages of detailed, step bystep instructions on how to configure simple, sample portlets.Maddeningly, none of the sample portlets come with their source code, they only come with the class files. The author is annoyingly glib. For example, the author mentions that the sample Webpage Portlet is nearly useless because it cannot maintain state, then adds glibly, "Still, this portlet is a good way to integrate existing Web applications into a portal in proof-of-concept situations".This chapter is written at practically a kindergarden level of understanding in comparison to the prior chapters. It reads kind of like a series of powerpoint slides to be presented by sales to non-technical managers, to try to convince them how easy the product is to use.

The next 15 pages of chapter "10" are so complicated and difficult to follow that they require being re-read at least three times. They assume an expert level of J2EE programming ability and are quite discouraging to anyone who thinks portals might have a long term place in the world of programming. The *next* 7 pages, on Virtual Portals, is useful and important. It concludes, "The topic of Virtual Portals is huge-- more than can be adequately covered here."Next is 10 pages on Web Services for Portlets. The chapter and the book end with 6 pages on internationalization. The obligatory"Door Closings" for the last chapter states the chapter covered the features of WebSphere Portal "that set it above the rest."It adds, "they might not be available to the general portal user community."

The bottom line is that this is a book from IBM press that through thick and thin has a mandate to try to get people to use IBM Websphere Portal, even if the authors have to jump through hoops to make this monstrously complicated product seem attractive. If your corporation has WPS then you need this book. Sigh.

There is an online tutorial on the IBM website covering some of the same material as this book that should get five stars and then some.Run don't walk to the amazing, cutting edge, state of the art, A plus plus tutorial at the following link.If you read the book and view the following tutorial as well, you are well on your way to mastery. They complement each other nicely even though the book is 2 stars and the online tutorial is 5 stars. http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere/education/enablement/wbt/sw756.html?ca=drs-

Review of Going Wi-Fi: A Practical Guide to Planning and Building an 802.11 Network (Paperback)

I'm a technology consultant for a Wi-Fi company, so I'm interested in books that go beyond how to set up a nice network in your home or connect to the hotspot at your local café.

I've researched quite a few books and while many offer insights into Wi-Fi, this is finally a book that offers the depth and coverage that I need.

The book covers the entire spectrum of information (pardon the pun) from the history of Wi-Fi down to the gritty details of just what a radio signal looks like, how antennae function, the nuts and bolts of the various standards, and what it really takes to roll out a secured hotspot for the home, the local café, or the business enterprise.

I especially enjoyed the insights into the entrepreneurial aspects of Wi-Fi. The book covers various business models, how the market was segmented at the time of writing, and who the players were.

The only drawback is that as a hot technology, the landscape is changing quickly. I did find that the book was dated in several areas just because it is already a few years old, and the market is changing quickly.

I do consider this a must-have on the shelf of anyone who either works with Wi-Fi or is managing projects that involve Wi-Fi, and especially those companies tapping into delivery of Wi-Fi solutions as a business model.

Product Description
Make informed decisions about planning and installing 802.11 'Wi-Fi' wireless networks. This book helps you tackle the challenge, whether installing Wi-Fi within an existing corporate network or setting up a wireless network from scratch in any business

A practical guide to planning and implementing 802.11 wireless networks in enterprise and institutional networks.

Review of Microsoft® Certification Careers: Earn More Money (Paperback)

As a person seeking a new career, I found this book to answer my most basic questions about IT (and I have to admit that my questions were pretty basic). The author details the distinctions among the types of Microsoft Certification and describes the types of certification exams (without--and this is important!--being a study guide for them). As to format, chapters end with summaries of the key ideas presented. Also, the book includes short interviews with people who work in the field. Much of the information is presented in easily digestable bullets and paragraph-long sections, so it can be absorbed by people who are reading the material after a long day at their present job. Although I ultimately decided that Microsoft Certification is not for me, this was the book that gave me the tools to make that decision.

Review of Happy About Global Software Test Automation: A Discussion of Software Testing for Executives (Paperback)

Happy About Global Software Test Automation: A Discussion of Software Testing for Executives is an absolute must read for any executive in a company that develops, customizes or implements software.

For years, software testing has been notoriously under valued and misunderstood by corporate executives. While leading software testers have been trying to get their message to executives from the bottom up, they have been largely unsuccessful. This book has the potential to change that.

Hung Nguyen is a widely respected leader in the software testing community who has shared his experiences with corporate executives in the first software testing book written explicitly *for* executives. If you are an executive in a company that develops, customizes or implements software, this book is for you.It is straight forward, relevant, applicable and easy to digest. In fact, it is the perfect book to take with you on your next business trip as it is organized in sections that are the perfect size for layovers, take-offs and landings - at least that was the case for me.

With this book, all it takes is one business trip and you'll be able to engage in risk and ROI based planning to minimize many of the challenges and expenses your company faces related to software through the efficient and effective application and management of software testing.

Product Description
Testing problems are difficult, expensive, and hard to understand. Most software companies have bugs escape the testing cycles and reach customers.

How can some of the inherent problems with software testing be eliminated? This book addresses this fundamental issue and helps the reader understand the high-level elements necessary to better execute software test automation and outsourcing initiatives.

Although your team may know about test automation, have they ever executed efficiently to meet the goals of faster delivery, better quality, and saving money? If not, this book is a must read.

The goal of the book is to help make testing less of an albatross and to provide a guide to software testing success. If done right, you can: Increase quality, Decrease cost and Increase speed to market.

Co-Apple founder Steve Wozniak says that "Software is complex but I'm tired of finding bug after bug that a 5th grader wouldn't have turned in. Virtually every technical product these days includes a lot of software. It's a rare engineer that can write nearly perfect code. Methodical and thorough testing of software is the key to quality products that do what the user expects. Read this book to learn what you need to do!"

From the Publisher
This book elevates the status of software testing from a "must be part of software development" to a "it's really a valuable addition to the software development process. If you're a software company, I'd recommend that the entire management team browse through this book. If you're company develops software, this book should be part of every person's library.

Review of ASP.NET Professional Projects [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I think this is the best book available on ASP.NET on the market.Unlike some of the other books that I have read this book is not a rehash of the .NET documentation. This book brings a lot of clarity to some of the stuff I had been struggling with. The writing style is very clear and crisp. Advanced topics are covered with excellent examples. Again unlike other books, the projects and samples presented are not "toy" samples but real code that you can use. I simply love the GenEditAdd custom control described in this book and I am already using this in my projects. Basically this custom control hooks onto the DataGrid and allows you to edit and insert rows into the grid. It automatically builds an input form by reading the SQL behind the DataGrid. It allows you to have drop-down columns (which is not possible with the DataGrid) and quite a few other features. The book is strong on web services and completely describes a Quicken like accounting application and an inventory application using web services. Visual studio is described in detail and again I like the authors approach of first describing and then looking at each detail under the magnifying glass.

Product Description
Learn how you can use ASP.NET to accomplish real-world, professional tasks. Incorporating five hands-on projects, Microsoft ASP.NET Professional Projects is your key to unlocking the power of ASP.NET. Each project is based on a real-world situation. Work your way through as you build a Web-enabled personal finance manager, develop an inventory management system, and master the Visual Studio development tools. You will be able to use the skills that you develop throughout the book to modify the projects as needed to fit your professional needs.

From the Publisher
This book offers intermediate to advanced IT professionals the chance to learn the inner workings of new SOAP/XML developments by working through a real-life application. Readers will design an accounting product for the Web using ASP .NET and Web Services. The application can be written in any .NET language and all communication is over the Internet. Readers will walk away feeling confident about developing real-life projects using ASP .NET.

Review of Focus On Curves and Surfaces (Focus on Game Development) (Paperback)

The book is great on giving people an intuitive grasp on what a B-Spline or NURB is, allowing people to look at series of points and knowing "sorta" what the curve will look like.

The only serious lacking point is it's explanation of Knot Vectors and the reason they're ordered the way they are and what the numbers in them represent. It's a tricky subject to explain though, and the author made a good effort, but really needs to explain what the numbers DO persay.(Though if you play with the source and have a good eye it eventually makes sense).Anyway, excellent book and is the reason I'm the only person in my 3D Graphics class who knows how NURBS work (teacher included... "Just download code off the internet" he says, sheesh).

Anyway, BUY!It be good!

Product Description
This is the only curves and surfaces book for beginners. It provides clear, practical explanations of curves and surfaces with the minimum of esoteric mathematical notation, making it far more accessible. You will be able to work along with the material for a better understanding of the concepts and a working knowledge of practical applications. Focus on Curves and Surfaces splits the material in two sections. The first part walks you through several forms of curves and surfaces explaining lines and functions of the equations. The next part moves from simple planes to complex surfaces so you can learn how to render surfaces using smoothing and simplification.

Review of 301 Inkjet Tips and Techniques: An Essential Printing Resource for Photographers (Digital Process and Print) (Paperback)

Don't let the title of this book fool you! There is so much more here than just Inkjet Tips! So much, in fact, that Andrew Darlow should consider a new title when the inevitable second edition comes out!

I came across this book after hearing an interview with Andrew on Scott Shepard 's Inside Digital Photo podcast. When he started to explain what was in the book I really took notice and ordered it immediately. I originally expected the usual collection of tips and tricks to make your inkjet prints better but Andrew's interview had me expecting more.

In the first part of the book Andrew covers everything you need to consider to make top quality, gallery grade, professional prints. And I mean EVERYTHING.How to prepare your files, how to choose a printer, black & white conversion, and on and on. Along with all of this extensive and in depth information, Andrew provides help with putting togethera portfolio, business cards, matting, you name it. The first part of this book alone is worth the admission.Andrew's style is easy to read and his information is easy to work into you personal workflow.

The remaining chapters are a treasure chest of guest artists' tips and ideas. Phil Bard, Edward Fausty, C. David Toble, Derek Cooper, Amadou Diallo, and Dorothy Simpson Krause are some of the guests you can learn from. Each artist brings their own experience and style to the art of printmaking and presentation. This section was a real treat.

Andrew Darlow has far exceeded the expectation of his book's title. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and will keep it as a valued reference as I hone my printmaking skills. Don't miss this one!

Review of Microsoft Excel VBA Professional Projects (Paperback)

This book's subtitle "Professional Projects" led me to believe that the projects would be useful examples easily adapted to typical business situations. I was wrong. The books starts out with a breezy 150-page overview of VBA but then goes into the development of four projects that incorporate the most complex aspects of VBA programming. The first project is enough for all but the most experienced VBA programmer to shelve the book and forget about it.The first project, an excel-html converter, is preceded by three chapters that describe the necessary components for the converter: Custom Menus, Charts and Custom Objects. It is highly unlikely that the average business user is going to expend the time and energy to learn how to create their own custom objects particularly for a project of such little usefulness. The second project is a Data Analysis project incorporating a data exchange with Access and pivot tables. The third project involves creating a stock ticker with internet access and the final project involves automating data analysis and fitting a curve to the data. I did like the format of the book whereby each project is preceded by a couple chapters explaining the components (excel objects) that make up the project but those chapters are not in-depth enough for the casual VBA to fully grasp what is going on. The projects themselves are suited for an experienced users or those seeking to become serious VBA programmers. For the business user I recommend instead Albright's VBA for Modelers.

Product Description
Microsoft Excel VBA Professional Projects illustrates and teaches intermediate to advanced techniques in VBA programming using Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet application. It provides an introduction to VBA and Excel VBA before proceeding through four to five programming projects using Excel to illustrate basic and advanced programming techniques. It does not assume any prior knowledge of Excel VBA programming.

Review of Dreamweaver MX Weekend Crash Course (Paperback)

I have tried several of the 5 star rated Dreamweaver books and found them of less value than this book. You must actually work with Dreamweaver to learn it and this book forces you to do this. To really work through this book will take awhile unless you have 100% free time, but it is really better this way. You will make errors and the book has some errors (which makes you think-you can work through these) and there are a few omissions. These issues are not a big deal. Peck's writing style is pleasant and down to earth. Yes, it doesn't cover everything, but it covers most aspects of Dreamweaver (I don't have MX). Actually, this is an advantage for beginners since it is not overwhelming. After you work through this book, you will be able to construct your own website. If you want advance features like transactions and databases, you will need additional references, but you must get the basics. Templates and CSS (basic aspects) are covered. Best of all, Peck has the practical experience to give you what you really need to know.

Product Description
  • Updated coverage of the new version: Enhanced and detailed coverage of all the newest features in Dreamweaver over the span of a weekend.
  • Series features: Easy to follow 30-minute sessions make learning Dreamweaver simple and fast! Each session is designed to take 30 minutes to complete, so the Crash Course is an intense 15-hour learning period beginning on Friday evening and ending on Sunday afternoon.
ABOUT THE CD-ROM:
CD includes self-assessment software so readers can test their knowledge of ActionScript, plus author source code and examples.

Book is well-written and covers all the major subjects, but I can't help but think that there's more detail to CRM4 than what is presented.

This is a broad overview. Good book for starters, but it won't tell you how to do what YOU want/need to do after setting things up. You will need to extrapolate that yourself. Review of Understanding Partnership Accounting (Second Edition) (Paperback)

The book provides an introductory overview of partnership accounting. All the calculations and formulas cited in the book are from its own software. Those similar formulas are also provided in other softwares which are much more commonly used, e.g. MS Excel. Lots of time spent on the tax allocations rather than on the P&L allocations. There're also apparent errors in the formulas as well, such as the annualized return calculation on P. 246.

Review of Excel Programming: Your visual blueprint for creating interactive spreadsheets (Paperback)

For some time, I have wanted to program in Visual Basic for Applications as a means to automate Excel 2000/2002.I have looked at many titles in the bookstore by various authors (experts in the field, unquestionably), but none seem targeted to the novice or intermediate user who simply wants to understand the VBA environment and how to benefit from its powerful capabilities. If other books were trying to target such an audience, then they suffered from poor readability and simply too much material. This book instills confidence in novice users as the reader is given very succinct explanations on variables, procedures, subroutines/functions, and, of course, the Excel Object Model.I have not been able to put the book down, practically speaking.

Extremely well organized, with generally very good and detailed graphics. It makes its point in roughly 325 pp. and features an excellent appendix dealing with constants, etc. I believe this book will forever relegate the more pricey books I have on the subject to a shelf in my technical library. The others are authoritative books, to be sure, but I never gained confidence with the format. Reading other sources proved exhausting when compared to this book.As an Excel user who wrote some macros in the Excel 95 version of the software, this book is a welcome addition. The book contains probably a few typos, and perhaps an illustration or two (screen shots of the Excel or VB Editor interface) is unclear or improperly rendered(such as in the section "Remove a Module"). Minor, minor details that won't matter in the overall scheme of things - this book rates very high in my opinion. Another plus: the CD ROM has the sample code used in many sections in the book as well as an "e-version" of the book itself.

Review of PHP Game Programming (Paperback)

... not that good. It's unfortunate that the only book dedicated to php game programming really falls short on many levels. The main problem with this book, is it jumps from the very basics of php and mysql to extremely advanced topics all within a matter of a few pages... entirely omitting users of intermediate php/mysql knowledge. The book has a chapter about creating a MMO (my sole purpose for buying the book).. yet it doesn't tell you anything about HOW to make the MMO.The source code for the MMO has 150+ files, yet the chapter is only 20 pages long...

The author does a great job explaining how to use php and mysql.. including great instructions for installation... the problem is that other books dedicated to learning these subjects do it better. This book should be about learning how to program a game in php/mysql, and it's not. This book is a book about learning the basics of php/mysql with some source code WAY more advanced than anything the book will cover. If you're advanced enough to decipher the authors code, then you don't need this book in the first place becaues you could already make games if you wanted. This book contains no content on game planning or design.

The author write effectively..I'd love for him to take a second pass at writing this...perhaps sit down and write a book dedicated to teaching you how to program a game. The MMO that comes within the book is certainly complex enough to deserve a book of it's own.Ultimately, this book is 280 pages long.. you cannot teach someone how to make a game in php/mysql in 280 pages.

I'd love to see an author write a book that illustrates making a game from concept to design to code... the how and the why of the processes, and have it return a good game you can use as a foundation for creating other game.

I really looked forward to getting this book before it was published. Now almost a year later, having been through the book 3 times fully, I can say I'm no closer to having any idea how to make a game than when I started.

Product Description
Wouldn't it be great if you could get on any web browser, go to your favorite site and start playing a game of hearts or canasta; or even watch a riveting game of chess, or better yet, play a riveting game of chess? All of this without needing custom software to connect you to servers; it would all be done through the web browser. People on cell phones, palm pilots, lap tops, any device that could get on the Internet would be able to play your games. PHP is a powerful, dynamic programming language that gives you the ability to make some killer Web-based games. It's portable, allowing for quick development cycles. As a result, even a beginning PHP programmer could have great games running in no time at all. Starting with a brief overview of HTML and web servers, PHP Game Programming gives you everything you need to know to become a master of PHP. The only thing missing is a programmer with the skills to make it happen!

From the Publisher
Provides programmers with the tools and knowledge they need to get PHP running, create dynamic pages, manage data, dynamically generate graphics and even create sockets. Review of Memory Dump Analysis Anthology, Volume 2 (v. 2) (Paperback)

As an Escalation Engineer for a large software company, live debugging and post-mortem memory dump analysis is a part of my daily routine. I often find myself debugging some strange/unique problems, where I am sometimes stuck staring at stacktraces wondering where do I go next... In these times I would often find myself searching the web, trying to find more information, which would mostly leadme to http://www.dumpanalysis.org... On this site, I usually find that Dmitry not only encountered a similar situation before, but has fully documented and classified in-depth debugging information regarding the issue.

It is no surprise that the contents of his book (Memory Dump Analysis Anthology, Volume 1) contained a vast collection of Windows debugging knowledge, fully illustrated, with great explanations of complex topics broken down nicely so that even a beginner can hit the ground running with Windows debugging. This book is a great resource for both beginners wanting to explore the realm of Windows debugging, as well as for professionals who perform debugging (both live and post-mortem) that need a reference for various memory patterns.

In the past it has always been difficult to find a solid source for Windows debugging information, as bits and pieces of this knowledge has been scattered across various sources. It is nice to be able to pick up one resource such as this book, and follow it through to the end and actually build a strong Windows debugging foundation. Complete with code examples, illustrations and screenshots, this is a must have for anyone who is serious about debugging on Windows.

Cheers!
KappA

Review of Excel Data Analysis: Your Visual Blueprint for Analyzing Data, Charts, and PivotTables, 2nd Edition (Visual Blueprint) (Paperback)

First of all I have to confess that this book was acquired under the conditions that I probably know 90% of the materials covered in the book. Thus my interest is in the 10% I am not aware of and the other 10% if there are alternative ways to solve problems better than I am doing now.

In this regards, I am satisfied. However if you are looking for learning simple "how-to"s like conditional formula, creating a chart, you would be disappointed since this book covers too much depth for beginners and it becomes easy to get lost in the sea of information.

Product Description
