First off, this book is very well written. He has accomplished the difficult; making a computer book that's enjoyable to read.If I were new to eBay or to the online auction arena, I can see where this would help me.Dennis explains the entire process from A to Z.

Now for the downside.Isell daily at eBay, and I was hoping to gain a little more in depthinformation, ie. best times to post, credit cards, taxes, listingstrategies, handling deadbeat bidders, etc.Based on the earlier reviews, this book was supposed to be beneficial to even the most advanced of eBayusers.I did not find that to be the case.

All in all the book wasworth the money. If you are new to eBay, then this is a MUST HAVE.I willhand it off to my father, as he is new to eBay and this should be right uphis alley.

Nothing wrong with the book. It just didn't have what I was hoping for in it. Typical software tutorial restating the help info with a new example here and there. It may have been great when it was written in 2003. We still use 6.5 at work.

I bought it used. Seller's description was accurate. Good condition and shipped on time.

Review of Microsoft Internet & Networking Dictionary (Bpg-Other) (Paperback)

Yes, this "Microsoft Internet & Networking Dictionary" did cover the most important networking and Internet terms. Its appendixes harbour updated Internet codes and domain names. But, with just over three-thousand entries, no non-beginner would pay serious attention to it.
Its greatest strength lies in being both elaborate and portable. However, many common high-tech jargons and Programming acronyms were excluded: thus ensuring that the book remains palatable only to inexperienced learners.

Product Description
With today's fast pace of innovation in networking and on the Internet, new technical terms appear constantly. This handy pocket-sized dictionary-a subset of the terms found in the popular, recently updated Microsoft Computer Dictionary, Fifth Edition-promises to keep people up-to-date on the latest terms they need to know. It includes more than 3,000 of the most important terms about the Internet and networking, and it also provides appendixes of Internet country codes and domains, common file extensions, and Instant Messaging emoticons and acronyms. It's the ideal Internet and networking reference for home, office, school, or wherever the latest technology takes you!

Review of Learning from Cyber-Savvy Students: How Internet-Age Kids Impact Classroom Teaching (Paperback)

Based on six months observing a class in a school where the students had easy and routine access to computers and the Internet, Anne Hird presents an informative and insightful report (often using the student's own words) of the impact of the new electronic communication resources and techniques upon classroom curriculum, teacher strategies, and student cognition in Learning From Cyber-Savvy Students. Impressive, scholarly, informative, ground breaking, thoughtful, and challenging, Learning From Cyber-Savvy Students is very highly recommended reading regarding the real-world realities of integrating computer technology and the Internet into elementary and secondary school classrooms and curriculums.

Product Description
As the Internet shifts from novelty to common household utility, more and more students are coming to school with Internet experience.

How will students' and teachers' roles, and schools as institutions, change as these Internet-age kids enter classrooms that are fully equipped with networked computers?

This book offers a unique preview of the issues and challenges teachers will face as their classrooms become fully connected to the Internet.

Anne Hird spent six months observing a class at a school where the future has already arrived. She presents a vivid and insightful account--often reported through the students' own words--of how young teens use computers in and out of school; how they perceive the world shaped by the Internet; and how these factors shape their expectations for classroom learning.

Hird observes and reflects on the paradox that confronts teachers in this new environment. They are expected to guide students in learning with a cognitive tool that was not part of the teachers' experience as students, while students' familiarity with the Internet calls into question the authority of the teacher on which the traditional teacher-student relationship is based. She offers a strategy for professional development that recognizes and builds on this inevitable shift in the teacher-student relationship.

This is an absorbing, thought-provoking and practical book for all educators--individual teachers and administrators alike--concerned about the integration of computer technology into elementary and secondary school classrooms.

Review of The Joy of Working from Home (Paperback)

I have worked from my home for the last 4 months and up until yesterday I felt like I was going out of my mind. I woke up in my office every morning and I went to sleep in my office every evening. I was stuck at home all day and there was no escape. That is, not until I purchased The Joy of Working From Home.

Jeff Berner's book is not only graphically superior to any business book I have ever read, but it is loaded with information on working from home. It covers how to avoid the evil temptations working from home presents, how to stay well organized, how to find clients and most importantly, how to get paid.

I realize that today is only my first day, but I have a feeling the rest of my life has changed for the better. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves working from home. The author knows what he is talking about too. His clients include Nikon, Office Depot and Apple Computers.

Review of Windows 2000 Administration for Dummies (Paperback)

Having worked as a systems administrator for a Windows NT (as well as Unix and Linux) network(s), I found this book to be completely silly, and of hardly any real use whatsoever. Bellmo's attempt at providing an intelligent and useful guide to the implementation of a W2K server and network is no better than a Public Relations blurb for Microsoft. He relies on a number of unsupported assumptions about the superiority of W2K without actually discussing (or demonstrating) how this latest version from the Microsoft family is better than the previous one. He wastes valuable time praising the new "bells and whistles" W2K has to offer, when he should have spent more time and energy explaining (and showing) how W2k might make your LAN more reliable and less costly. This book, like so many others, is mostly just technical hype.

Review of The Official XMLSPY Handbook (Paperback)

I don't feel tempted to write a review very often but for this book I do. It is a warning: Don't buy this book. There are an awfull lot of better books about XML, XML Schema's and XSLT around (try Wrox) and the book doesn't tell you anything about XML spy (which is a great product!) that you can't find out with an hour or so of clicking around and trying the features.
More important: It doesn't even mention the more interesting features of XML Spy that do seem to require a manual: Extending the product by writing macro's for instance or this Authentic stuff.
For me, unfortunately, it was a waste of time and money.

Product Description
  • Covers all the features of the number one XML development tool-currently used by over 500,000 developers worldwide
  • Written by one of Altova's top XML "spies," this book will be an indispensable study guide for XML Spy Certification

Review of Perl for Dummies (Third Edition) (Paperback)

I am copying an excerpt from "The Perl Journal" review of this book.

__START__

Summary: This is a really rotten book. Very few books are able to attain as many as eight major flaws:

1.'Dummy' approach encourages and reinforces the reader's disability

2.Lack of concrete programming examples

3.Lack of general discussion of how to program, apart from language-specific features

4.Reference manual organization style

5.Inclusion of too many useless and abstruse features

6.Complicated explanations where simple ones arepossible

7.Scaremongering and panic instead of calm explanation of affairs

8.Many, many technical errors, some very serious

__END__

I taught myself Perl with little programming background (BASIC, 20 years ago). I started 1 1/2 years ago and am now using it daily as a web developer and data analyst.

Learning Perl from the books and resources out there is *extremely* difficult. There were many times I could've saved 3 weeks of hammering on a script if a perl guru had said, "Hey, list context just means the function wants a list, like an array or hash." I understand very well that the O'Reilly books are godawful for a beginner b/c that's where I started and suffered long from every explanation that said simply, "It's just like in C, so we won't explain it." That said, the books are pretty terrific once you're at a level to absorb them, but steer clear before then, unless you already know everything that POSIX means.

It might be tempting to pick up this book b/c there are pretty much no Perl books for those who haven't coded already. You should consider "The Elements of Perl" instead of this one. It's a better start for beginners and a wonderful way to start to understand Perl, its idioms, its culture, and how to program well. There is also "The Perl Black Book" which is a much better overview of the Perl than any single O'Reilly book, though the author isn't a guru, he's a good writer and tackles everything from the basics to advanced stuff with lots of examples and a CD with all the code.

Perl is wonderful, so please do pick up a book, just not this one.

Review of Electronic Enterprise: Strategy and Architecture (Paperback)

This book is worth more than its weight in gold! More and more books I read for research, less and less new things I learn and this indeed is frustrating. This book is a rare exception to this experience. I generated much more awareness about what an electronic enterprise can be and learnt much more about strategy for going about it and implementing the architecture. For any one desiring to do so, studying this book is a must. The most important strength of this book is that it offers an ocean of knowledge in a nutshell. Excellent models are presented explaining difficult concepts. Best investment for the time and resources spent on it.

Large organizations no more need to become dinosaurs! This book teaches them how to become agile and dance to the tune of changing environmental factors and serve the mankind! Not only that. The large or aspiring organizations also can make impact on environment. Author's communication skill is so excellent that this book is good both for a novice or an expert in the field of management or in the information technology. No matter how much of expertise an expert may have on the subject, may still learn at least a few new pragmatic things about electronic enterprise!

Despite this book presenting so many ground breaking academic concepts it easily grabs the interest of reader right from the start and retains it till the end. What amazed me the most reading this book is that it discussed concepts in electronic enterprise not in isolation but in totality of the whole world scenario which is only the right thing to do in this global village business that the electronics has helped create!

A must read and study book for all FORTUNE 500 companies and those desiring to become one!

Product Description

Review of Psychology of Teaching and Learning in the Primary School (Hardcover)

David Whitebread is the editor and he contributed to one of the chapters of this book only. On the whole, the coverage of this book is good. It covers things about how to improve the decoration of the classroom; fuller communication with pupils; how to motivate pupils in their learning; what could be done to improve their memory; or else their problem solving skill; now to create a better reading environment; how to improve their maths ability...etc.

What is particularly well written and commendable is the chapter about children with emotional hardship -- yet, one is not sure if the chapter contributed by the editor about problem solving is nearly as good.We have quite a number of contributors often with different emphasis, different styles etc.

On the whole, the book is not as lucid and concise as the Harvard University Press series, nor the articles as profound as the equivalents printed by some other American universities. However, this book do provide us with a good coveragecoming with quite a number of good suggestions, a general overview of the issues that we need to consider in the teaching of small children, either as a teacher or as parents.

Product Description
This is an easy to read book for teachers and teachers-in-training that reviews the theory and research in psychology as it relates to practice in the primary classroom. It also provids activities and observations which can be carried out in class as well as questions for discussion.

Review of Valuing Employee Stock Options (Wiley Finance) (Hardcover)

The book does a decent job of providing intuition on why traditional Black-Scholes framework will not work for Employee Stock Options. But then again, if directional intuition is what you are seeking, why spend the money on this book when you can get the same information by reading articles published in the Financial Analysts Journal (FAJ)? The book and the accompanying CD seem to be very cryptic when it comes to understanding the effects of early exercise. The CD is pretty much a black-box. If you think you can buy this book and explain the results of the analysis, then you are mistaken. Unless you have a PhD in Finance or a Masters in Financial Engineering, you may not understand what the algorithms do. Then again, if you had these degrees, you wouldn't need the book!

Product Description
A comprehensive guide to understanding the implications and applications of valuing employee stock options in light of the new FAS 123 requirements
Due to the new requirements of the Proposed Statement of Financial Accounting Standards (FAS 123) released by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)-namely the fact that employee services received in exchange for equity instruments be recognized in financial statements-companies are now scrambling to learn how to value and expense employee stock options (ESOs). Based on author Dr. Johnathan Mun's consulting and advisory work with the FASB consulting projects with several Fortune 500 firms, Valuing Employee Stock Options provides readers with a comprehensive look at this complex issue.
Filled with valuable information on binomial lattice and closed-form modeling techniques, Valuing Employee Stock Options can help financial professionals make informed decisions when attempting to ascertain the fair-market value of ESOs under the new requirements.
Johnathan Mun, PhD, MBA, MS, CFC, FRM (San Francisco, CA), is Vice President of Analytical Services at Decisioneering, Inc., the makers of Crystal Ball analytical software. He is also the author of Applied Risk Analysis (0-471-47885-7), Real Options Analysis (0-471-25696-X), and Real Options Analysis Course (0-471-43001-3), all of which are published by Wiley.

From the Inside Flap
The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) released a Proposed Statement of Financial Accounting Standards (FAS) in 2004 that amended earlier FAS Statements 123 and 95. Soon after, the Wall Street Journal called this release "amoung the most far- reaching steps that the Financial Accounting Standards Board has made in its thirty-year history. " As a result, companies must learn how to rigorously and efficiently value and expense employee stock options (ESOs).

Based on author Johnathan Mun's advisory work with the FASB over 2003 and 2004, his graduate research work in the area of options analysis, and actual FAS 123 consulting projects with several Fortune 500 firms, Valuing Employee Stock Options provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the valuation applications of a customized binomial lattice through a systematic and objective assessment of the methodology.

This just-in-time resource includes informative sections that:

  • Review the impact of ESO Cost
  • Illustrate the issues of fair market valuation through an analytical assessment of three mainstream approaches used in option pricing
  • Discuss the technical background required to run the Black-Scholes model (BSM) and customized binomial lattices
  • Run through in-depth sample case studies applying FAS 123
  • Provide multiple options valuation results that prove valuable from the perspective of both an analyst and a chief financial officer

The analyses performed in this book also use the author's own proprietary customized binomial lattice computer algorithms as well as his Real Options Analysis Toolkit, and Decisioneering, Inc.'s Crystal Ball Monte Carlo simulation software.

Filled with in-depth insight and expert advice, Valuing Employee Stock Options can help CFOs and finance directors as well as analysts, consultants, and accountants understand the implications and applications of valuing employee stock options in light of today's ever-changing financial rules and regulations.

Review of Managing Risk (Paperback)

"A central argument of this book is that both theoretical and practical approaches to the three subject areas - management, risk and change - are not only linked but also convergent... [But]...these 'obvious' overlaps and interactions are not yet treated generally in a holistic way."

This quotation is from Chapter 9 'A Fuzzy Convergence', which summarises the main arguments and introduces the case studies that make up the second half of the book. All managers would benefit from reading this chapter and Chapter 16 'A management Agenda', even if they decide to leave the rest of the book for 'the experts'. However, they are also likely to find material to interest them among the case studies - for example Chapter 15 is a long and very thorough study of a health system 'UK health authorities struggle to survive'.

For those with a direct responsibility for managing risk - which, after all, includes all senior managers, if not everyone with a managerial responsibility - the book is an invaluable guide to the details of risk management and what 'risk' encompasses, as well as to the cultural, technological, environmental and other linkages that make up the linked phenomena of risk and their management. As the authors point out:

"...integration of different risk management functions, disciplines and activities remains weak or non-existent in most organizations."

The book looks systemically at the whole process of strategic direction setting and change management from the perspective of recognising, accepting and managing risk. It is a perspective that is too often neglected, sometimes with the sorts of horrendous consequences spelled out in some of the case studies.

The book is thorough, well set out and easy to reference and not too technical in its presentation. It deserves a place in every organisation.

Product Description
This book offers a fresh perspective on the convergence of approaches to managing risk and introduces new developments in current thinking. Managing Risk pioneers an integrative and holistic approach to managing risk. Practitioners now increasingly acknowledge that risk cannot be dealt with effectively in a compartmentalised way. There is a need to introduce a broader perspective to the subject of risk and to recognise that approaches towards managing risk are beginning to converge.

This book gives people interested in Computer Science and Engineering a relatively comprehensive look at the various career options available to them.It discusses the educational requirements necessary for variouspositions, the starting salary of the positions and a short description ofthe work that would be performed. The only thing I found lacking in thisbook was the amount of information given regarding the specific job.Iwould have preferred more detail when describing the actual tasks of eachposition.Otherwise, I found the book quite helpful and I feel it painteda realistic portrait of most entry level positions available for engineersand computer science majors.

Since nobody's reviewed this much at all (I only read the TaxAnalyst's review of this book before I even thought of purchasing this) I guess I might as well be the first one on Amazon to review this.

First off just going to state that I'm currently a Master's-Tax, CFA level II candidate that has passed the US CPA exam so I do have some knowledge of this topic, as well as valuation, accounting practices, etc. No real-life experience, however. Basically going to give my perspective on the most of the book I have read so far (otherwise I'll probably forget to review, as I'll be busy after the end of Spring Break). I'm also assuming if you're even here you have some understanding of tax law--without it, this book can be a rather slow read.

First, the bad. While the book itself is quite small--approx. 320 pages, less than full-size hard-cover--and therefore terse, there are times when the points that transfer pricing rules in the various countries are unclear, perhaps unfair, etc. are reiterated way too much. It also talks about documentation to a good degree (a big requirement, as anyone who has any small understanding of T/P would know). However, as a student I expected much more with regard to this and perhaps some prime examples. It basically went on with the fact that the documentations requirements for, say, the US are not only high, but very hazy and therefore leaves companies vulnerable to the IRC Sec. 6662 penalties for TP adjustments. Considering that the book is on TP AND intangibles, I guess the lack of any available real-life examples should not be surprising. (If the book had at least given one descriptive example, even if theoretical, I would have gladly given 5 stars for this review.) Another odd thing was that intangible valuation for taxation purposes was not really per se discussed. As many would call this an art form, I'll refrain from commenting on this, and perhaps the author was just being smart in not discussing it either, as the valuation for such items are often delegated to independent third party valuation houses anyway. Just as an aside though, my understanding is that there are some fairly useful US cases on such intagible valuation/taxation if one looks for it, so it's not so bad.

As for the outline of the book, the first third of the book basically concerns itself with transfer pricing methodologies, the second third documentation requirements/penalties, and the last third mostly on APAs (I guess this part would be important mainly for practitioners with Fortune 500 size clients. The use of APAs, while growing, is only something very specialized practitioners will run into or consider.)

I felt that the recommendations near the end of certain issues were somewhat helpful. The book discusses the merits/shortfalls about global formulary apportionment as a solution to the "arms-length standard" and brings up a concise, and as far as I know, correct, understanding of the formulary apportionment used by the states in the US. I thought this was a nice touch, as reading the Code and pertinent regulations would not lead me to a discussion of such a possible, long-run alternative for the "arms-length standard." There were also occasionally requirements of different countries brought up as well (such as Japan) when they coincided with, for example, the OECD regulations/guidelines. That was a nice touch as well.

In conclusion therefore I found that the book, even though published in 2005, was still quite helpful in giving me more detail about the "logic" and pitfalls of transfer pricing rules in the US and OECD. The writing style is to the point, and leaves a lot of the rules to the footnotes and concentrates on the effect of these rules, somewhat similar to the writing style of Bittker & Eustice (which I like, by the way.) Hard to say if its worth the $150+ retail, considering that it is relatively short for such a tax topic. But at the same time I felt its a lot better than the repetition I often find in large tax books such as those published by Hellerstein. This is the kind of book one reads to get a better understanding, but probably does not really refer to afterwards for said topic. Overall I can definitely discuss this topic much much better now but I'm sure engaging this in the real-world will still be a rough ride. I personally didn't mind shelling out the dough for such analysis.

Hope this helps.

Review of Inspired 3D Character Setup (Paperback)

I have been using Maya extensively now for two years and bought this book to try to take myself into the intermediate level of character rigging.
The first problem I encountered with this book is that I opened it and the spine broke! Not exactly what you would expect from a [$$$] book.
I think it went downhill from there. Yes the pictures are beautiful and the it really showcases what you can do with Maya(or what others have done), but the editing in this book is terrible. Examples include naming of nodes that on the same page have two different names. The downloads don't match the book. e.g. ch13 has the low-res geo download that doesnt include the sphereCTRL or the cubeCTRL but sure has the proxyGEO. Anyone think i'm messed up? send me the right one please..
Otherwise, you are better off with the Art of Maya, or Secrets of the Pros. I think this is one not quite worth the money.

Review of Practical Guide to Computer Forensics: For Accountants, Forensic Examiners. and Legal Professionals (Paperback)

This book provides a nice overview of the profession. The authors offer detailed advice and opinions on forensic hardware and software tools, courtroom procedures, and analysis of forensic cases. However, this book has so many grammatical errors that you will find yourself skipping sections and making assumptions about the content. You will need to read some paragraphs several times to understand what the authors were attempting to convey. If there is another edition, hopefully it will be proofed.

Review of Military Advantage (Paperback)

This is an EXCELLENT book for anyone connected to the miltary. I just enlisted in the Air Force, and I am SO GLAD that I read this book first. There are so many things in there that, especially young recruits, need to know to make sure they dont get taken advantage of. Being in the military, there are certain benefits you are entitled to, and if you dont use them, you lose them. Sad but true. Young recruits are often taken advantage of for nothing more than innocence and ignorance through no fault of their own. THIS IS A MUST HAVE.

I checked this book out at my local library, and once I realized how helpful it was, I bought a copy of it because its an excellent source of reference. I feel a little more secure knowing its in the house, and I can refer to it any time I need to look something up about my benefits.

I know I said its excellent for young recruits, but it even talks about retirement and VA loans and stuff like that, so if you are already in the military, you'll still find a world of resource in this book.

Product Description
Military Advantage will show you how to make the most of military service-first, by serving your country with honor, courage, and commitment, and second, by taking advantage of civilian education and career opportunities afforded by military service. Review of Indiana University - College Prowler Guide (College Prowler Off the Record) (Paperback)

Learn the inside scoop on Indiana University with this well-written book. It's easy to read and use. While I graduated from Indiana Bloomington, I've not been to the campus in many years so I was fascinated to read this title. I appreciated the thorough look at college life. If you are considering IU for your son or daughter or grandson or granddaughter or yourself, get this book. It will help you.

Indiana University Students Tell It Like It Is

What do Isiah Thomas and Jane Pauley have in common? They're both Hoosier alumni! If you are thinking about going to Indiana University, don't waste your time researching every detail of the school. We've already done it for you! And our information comes straight from the Hoosiers themselves. (In case you didn't know, a Hoosier is IU's "mascot," an indefinable expression of school spirit what you are if you attend IU.)

You might feel like a dot at first, being just one of the over 27,000 students on campus. But it's not as much of a big world after you get adjusted.

"Even though it is a big place, there are always people from your hometown or your dorm or whatever to run into. The more you meet people, the more it becomes a small world."

You can bond over a good meal on campus.

"Campus food is really one of the top student gripes, along with parking. It's just one of those things that you have to get used to. It's not dog food, but it's not home cookin' either."

Maybe not. But not to worry off-campus options are plentiful.

"We have about every conceivable type of restaurant, and we keep getting more. Some local places are good, like Nick's English Hut, Puccini's (Italian), La Charreada (cheap but great Mexican), Malibu Grill, and the list goes on. We have everything from Indian to Tibetan to Greek."

Pretty soon, you'll start to feel less like a dot, and more like part of the big picture. School spirit is one of the things IU thrives on. Particularly strong when basketball season rolls around, students are proud to be Hoosiers and wear the Cream and Crimson like a badge.

"Every time we're recognized as a top party school, spirit soars as we pat each other on the back and raise our glasses, but the atmosphere is just as charged whether we're cheering the football team on to another defeat or protesting the departure of an Indiana legend."

A Hoosier is a Hoosier is a Hoosier, and even if no one really knows what that means, the cohesiveness of the student body (and the pride in this term) can't be ignored.

Find out if Indiana has something for you, straight from the students' mouths.

Visiting campus isn't enough.

Read our Indiana University insider's guide and discover what it feels like to be on campus for 4 years.

Discover if Indiana University is Right For You.

Review of Go Green! How To Use Your Mac Computer To Run A Paperless Business (Paperback)

Hi all,

I know a printed manual about how to not use paper must seen like a bit of a contradiction.

But this manual is being printed on demand only.

And this book (which is also available as a Kindle download and as a PDF eBook at computershy.com) has the potential to save *a lot* of trees.

During my research for this book, I realized that most of our printing is not really necessary and that our Mac computers can help us avoid most of the printing that might otherwise be a necessity.

Go Green! provides step by step instructions for using your Mac to run a paperless business or home office. You may also be surprised just how well suited Mac computers are for business applications.

Feedback is most welcome. Thanks for your interest in this crucial subject!

Review of JSP: The Complete Reference (Paperback)

I'm currently an Internet Software Engineer, using primarily Servlets and EJB technologies, and I was hoping to find a book that could give me a good reason to consider using JSPs. THIS IS THE BOOK. I now completely understand the purpose of JSPs, and where they fit into the Java Architecture. You will too, once you read this book.

Phil Hanna has compiled a superbly organized and useful book. He builds on concepts logically, and provides awesome examples to help the info sink in. (I can't over-emphasize the usefulness of the examples in this book!) The examples of using JSP Tag Extensions are particularly wonderful. This is perhaps the most confusing and powerful part of JSPs, and Mr. Hanna makes it SO much easier to understand.

If you want to learn JSPs and add them to your arsenal of programming wizardry, look no further! I wish that all of the technical books in my library were written this well.

Review of Designing Team-Based Organizations: New Forms for Knowledge Work (Jossey Bass Business and Management Series) (Hardcover)

Designing Team-Based Organizations is a book with a more exciting title than content... though, the book is pretty good. It's not written in a very engaging style. Also the authors seem to have some assumptions about how to design new organizations which seemed weird to me.

The book consists of three parts. The first part is an introduction to teams and to the book. The second part talks about designing new organizations and the third part covers some implementation concerns.

The first two chapters provide an introduction in the rest of the book (and are probably two of the more interesting chapters). The first chapter covers different models of thinking about organizations and also introduces the three step model for designing organizations (basically: research, design, implement). The second chapter covers different organizations, teams and starts exploring how team-based organizations look like.

The second part has chapters called "Step one, Step two" etc. This is what bothered me most about the book. It suggested that you just follow five steps in designing a new organization and then just implement it (which is just one chapter). I got the impression that the authors were ONLY researchers and have never actually worked in or with organizations (though, they say they did research in organizations). Anyways..

The first step is to identify the teams. The second to discuss interteam issues and find ways for teams to work together. Interestingly enough, the authors seemed to be of opinion that management needs to create this structure more than the teams need to... (do the authors also have a traditional mindset?) Step three clarifies roles of management and roles of teams. Step four focuses on integration with the rest of the organization and... Step five on managing performance. This chapter contains some interesting info on different HR systems and is certainly worth reading.

Part three are *other* chapters that clarify issues. The first clarifies the different skill needs for teams and how this can be reached. The next (ninth) chapter talks about the concept of *empowerment*. The authors are of the opinion that the word is misused and want to clarify what they mean by this word. Some of the chapter is pretty good. The next chapter talks about different IT support. Though important, I found this chapter boring. Then with 40 pages left in the book, the authors move to "the implementation" and talk about different ways of transitioning to team-based organizations and in the last chapter, summarize the challenges. Interestingly, the book ends with a couple pages for researchers on what they think are future areas for research.

I was excited about the book when I started, though I had trouble finishing it (a bad sign). The writing was fairly dry and hard to follow. Some chapters were excellent, some chapters were boring (different authors wrote different chapters?). I was annoyed by the assumptions of the authors about the three simple steps of organizational design. This didn't seem to be equal to my reality. The authors did point that out, but still insist to structure their work like that. Also, the authors warn about traditional assumptions and yet they seem to have lots of traditional assumptions also related to the roles of management compared to teams. Management is responsible for planning and designing the organizations, there was very little to suggest that the actual teams should be involved in the design...

Anyways, I did enjoy the book and learned some new things from it. I was going for four stars, but the last three chapters ruined it and I switched to three stars. This book is worth reading only if you are very interested in the subject. If you are looking for more general team books, then this is probably not the right book.

Review of Marketing Mayhem: Why Marketing Isn't Producing the Way It Used to (Hardcover)

This was advertised as a book explaining why marketing is not producing the way it used to. That is why I bought it as my marketing is not working the way it used to....I also know that Lewis is one of the best in the world at direct mail copy. I have read his works since the early 1980's and his wisdom has pulled me out of more than one hole.

The problem with this book is that all the way through you wonder if this man is pure genius resulting many successful efforts, or if he has he gone off the deep end. Regardless, the book, if nothing else, is way funny. Just the references to Sax Lewis will bust the toughest gut. It kept me in sincere stiches. I did not laugh at him, I laughed with him. He totally destroys the puffery some proudly call advertising. But he does more than destroy, he rebuilds. I needed some serious solutions for effective Web site copy, and I found them in this book. No, the book is not about writing Web copy. But if you combine this book with Nielsen and Tahir's "Homepage Usability" you will have all you need to know to produce a "killer" Web site. Lewis points out, in example after example, all the incredibily stupid mistakes that so-called pros have made inmarketing over the last ten years. He puts all these mistakes under a magnifying glass so powerful that it burns. The ants soon fry. In this intense light it becomes obvious what one must do to gain back the confidence of one's target reader.

This is a book you will either love or hate. But one thing is for sure - everyone in marketing needs to read this book. Why? Within a few hours of finishing this book I knew what I had to do on our Web sites. And within 24 hours of making the changes I got several positive emails. My phone also rang with new business. I was impressed because all I did was follow what Lewis said to do in his list of 5 things at the end of the book. This book paid for itself many hundreds of times over in just 24 hours. I will read it several more times. I can't absorb this much wisdom in one reading.

So why the one star rating? You are a skeptic. That is why you are reading the one star review instead of the 5 star....

Product Description
The author analyzes contemporary marketing to find theanswers to the key question: What has gone wrong with currentmarketing? We Have more statistical models, more computer technology, more "killer apps," and more seminars about CRM and branding andcustomer retention, and yet response rates have gone through the floorand productivity and profitability have followed. And our customersbelieve us less than ever before.

And no one seems to know why. Except for Lewis. He focuses on themisuses of technology, the substitution of flash for substance, andthe inability or unwillingness to keep concern for customer rapport inthe selling and marketing equation.

Why has marketing been failing? The answers are here.

Review of Sales Encyclopedia (Hardcover)

Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (11/09)

At first sight of this book I held my breath because of the 708 pages; however, once I started getting into the "meat" of the contents, I realized the value of every page. The authors are upfront in the beginning of the book by stating:If you study this book, master its principles, and apply what you've learned, you will find yourself at the very top of the selling profession...."And, I can't disagree with them.As I explored "Sales Encyclopedia," I realized this is not something I could skim through to get the full effect, but it is a book to read, read again, and implement as I go along in the second reading.

Interestingly enough, Chapin et al start off with distinguishing the difference between success and failure in selling. The reader, and prospective top salesperson, needs to be aware of this difference and the components of each. What one may think is success another may think of it as a failure. However, the authors make it very clear in setting apart the top salespeople from the mediocre and poor ones. But, they also make it very clear on how the mediocre and poor ones become top ones. The first chapter delves right into having a positive attitude - enthusiasm, drive, competitiveness, and confidence. If one doesn't have these characteristics there is no point continuing with a career as a top salesperson or any further in this book.

But, it's not only about attitude.According to the authors, a dedicated salesperson using the techniques set out in "Sales Encyclopedia" will systematically create a navigational structure to not only take themselves, but the company they own or work for far beyond any competitor.

Well written, well defined, and certainly well presented, "Sales Encyclopedia" is a book that can be used for all sales training seminars in companies, as well as mandatory reading for all inspiring salespeople, regardless of industry. Seasoned salespeople will also find confirmation of what they know already, but they will also find inspiration to make changes and look at their career with different eyes. Success only comes with the will to achieve it.Sales success comes with knowing the how and "Sales Encyclopedia" teaches the how.

Review of Managing IT/Community Partnerships in the 21st Century (Hardcover)

In their efforts to effect positive local change, universities have long been directly involved in shaping the community agendas of their local milieu. The same is now becoming true as it relates to improving the local technology landscape.Universities are natural partners in community development efforts given the human, intellectual and financial resources they can bring to bear on problems. They are also logical partners in community IT initiatives for these same reasons, and in recognition of the educational and technological resources resident on their campuses."Mangaging IT/Community Partnerships in the 21st Century" is perhaps the first comprehensive examination of the critical considerations for community-university partnerships involving information and communications technology. From course partnerships to educational and business partnerships to the so-called "digital divide," this book is a must for community practitioners and university researchers alike!

Product Description
Universities are increasingly being asked to play agreater role in their communities. With the growth of the technologyindustry and the increasing importance of the Internet in educationand everyday life, academic IT departments are beginning to formpartnerships with both non-profit and for-profit organizations in thelocal community. These partnerships can relate to the wholecurriculum, to specific classes, to students internships, totheoretical research, and to industrial research, and there are manyother possibilities for IT/Community partnerships. ManagingIT/Community Partnerships in the 21st Century explores the variouspossibilities for partnerships between academic IT departments andcommunity-based organizations.

From the Inside Flap
Introduction to 'Managing IT/Community Partnerships in the 21st Century'

Many people have a stereotypical view of the university as an 'ivory tower' of scholars who keep to themselves and are not involved with the day-to-day activities of the communities around them. In reality, most universities have multiple partnerships through which they make an immediate impact in the local communities. Community partnerships cross all boundaries within the university: Faculty, staff, and students, academic departments, administrative departments, student affairs, and athletic departments all can make a difference in their surrounding communities. Many universities even have offices of community service, or offices of community partnerships. The relationship between universities and their communities is a living, breathing relationship.

Academic departments of information technology can play a major role in these community partnerships. While these academic departments may have a variety of titles (Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Information Sciences, Management Science), and may fall under multiple academic units (Colleges of Business, Engineering, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, Library Sciences, etc..), these departments all have an important role to play, and important resources to share. As the importance of information technology increases, there are many technology needs in the community that go unfulfilled. Information technology must be not only for those who are economically privileged. Information technology must be used to improve the quality of everyone's life.

The chapters in this book provide a sampling of the many different types of partnerships taking place between communities and academic departments of information technology. The partnerships described take place in different universities, large and small, with different missions, in many different countries. They demonstrate the wide range of partnerships that have taken place, and they can provide a base of literature with which to build future partnerships.

I have organized the chapters along four major themes: course partnerships, educational partnerships, business partnerships, and digital divide partnerships. Although these themes, and the related partnerships, are not mutually exclusive, they provide a conceptual framework in which to present these partnerships. For instance, many of the course partnerships involved partnerships with local primary and secondary schools. Some of the business partnerships involve course curricula. Some of the business partnerships involve the educational system-local primary and secondary schools. Some of the course partnerships involve the digital divide. These different types of partnerships should not be viewed as individual solutions; rather, combinations of all of these partnerships should be sought to best meet the needs of the university and the community.

The first chapter, 'Service-Learning Opportunities in the Information Systems Curriculum,' by Jonathan Lazar and Doris Lidtke, provides a background on service-learning courses within the information systems curriculum. Service-learning courses involve students taking part in community service that is structured in a way to build on the classroom curriculum. In this chapter, the advantages and disadvantages of service-learning are discussed, and the infrastructure needed to successfully operate a service-learning class is presented. The major courses in an information systems curriculum are then presented, with corresponding information on how to present the class as a service-learning class, and where possible, examples of how service-learning has been successfully utilized. From personal experience and the published literature, the lessons learned can assist those attempting to implement service-learning in their classes. Finally, important issues that impact on the information systems curriculum, such as cheating and accreditation, are presented in the context of service-learning.

'Active-Learning in Higher Education: A Model and Roadmap, ' by Venkatesh and Small (Chapter 2), continues the discussion on service-learning and other experiential learning processes. The chapter provides an excellent discussion of the educational theories that inspire experiential learning in universities. The authors discuss their experiences with field projects at Syracuse University, including a number of design and networking-related courses. Venkatesh and Small also provide a discussion of the infrastructure at Syracuse University that has allowed their experiential learning programs to flourish.

In Chapter 3, Ruppel and Ruppel describe in detail a service-learning class that has worked with the same community partner for five semesters. In this Systems Analysis and Design class at the University of Toledo, students have helped a small K-8 private school with their computer networking needs. In the different semesters, the student groups assisted with the planning, design, and wiring of the computer network for the school. The students also assisted with grant writing, cost-benefit analyses, and web site development. This chapter provides an interesting view of a service-learning class, because students and faculty worked with the same non-profit organization over five semesters. Ruppel and Ruppel discuss the benefits of this course to both university students and the local school, and present their lessons learned, to be applied in courses that focus on networking or systems analysis and design.

Roberts and Boyle present the partnerships at the University of Leeds, a large university in the United Kingdom, which is surrounded by economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. This chapter, entitled 'University/Community Partnerships: Capstone Projects that Make a Difference,' describes the final-year projects that have benefited the community. All undergraduates are required to take part in capstone projects that last a minimum of 300 hours, and students can choose to do things such as perform research or develop new informational systems. Many of these final-year projects have been structured to assist local schools in meeting their information technology needs. These students have helped local schools with tasks such as infusing information technology into the curriculum, developing summer school programs in technology, organizing student clubs for those interested in technology, and building web sites. These projects have made a positive impact in the local community, and have also generated positive press for the university. Roberts and Boyle discuss the problem of evaluating these student projects for quality, given the variation in topics and location...
