Review of Electronic Enterprise: Strategy and Architecture (Paperback)

This book is worth more than its weight in gold! More and more books I read for research, less and less new things I learn and this indeed is frustrating. This book is a rare exception to this experience. I generated much more awareness about what an electronic enterprise can be and learnt much more about strategy for going about it and implementing the architecture. For any one desiring to do so, studying this book is a must. The most important strength of this book is that it offers an ocean of knowledge in a nutshell. Excellent models are presented explaining difficult concepts. Best investment for the time and resources spent on it.

Large organizations no more need to become dinosaurs! This book teaches them how to become agile and dance to the tune of changing environmental factors and serve the mankind! Not only that. The large or aspiring organizations also can make impact on environment. Author's communication skill is so excellent that this book is good both for a novice or an expert in the field of management or in the information technology. No matter how much of expertise an expert may have on the subject, may still learn at least a few new pragmatic things about electronic enterprise!

Despite this book presenting so many ground breaking academic concepts it easily grabs the interest of reader right from the start and retains it till the end. What amazed me the most reading this book is that it discussed concepts in electronic enterprise not in isolation but in totality of the whole world scenario which is only the right thing to do in this global village business that the electronics has helped create!

A must read and study book for all FORTUNE 500 companies and those desiring to become one!

Introduction to 'Managing IT/Community Partnerships in the 21st Century'

Many people have a stereotypical view of the university as an 'ivory tower' of scholars who keep to themselves and are not involved with the day-to-day activities of the communities around them. In reality, most universities have multiple partnerships through which they make an immediate impact in the local communities. Community partnerships cross all boundaries within the university: Faculty, staff, and students, academic departments, administrative departments, student affairs, and athletic departments all can make a difference in their surrounding communities. Many universities even have offices of community service, or offices of community partnerships. The relationship between universities and their communities is a living, breathing relationship.

Academic departments of information technology can play a major role in these community partnerships. While these academic departments may have a variety of titles (Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Information Sciences, Management Science), and may fall under multiple academic units (Colleges of Business, Engineering, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, Library Sciences, etc..), these departments all have an important role to play, and important resources to share. As the importance of information technology increases, there are many technology needs in the community that go unfulfilled. Information technology must be not only for those who are economically privileged. Information technology must be used to improve the quality of everyone's life.

The chapters in this book provide a sampling of the many different types of partnerships taking place between communities and academic departments of information technology. The partnerships described take place in different universities, large and small, with different missions, in many different countries. They demonstrate the wide range of partnerships that have taken place, and they can provide a base of literature with which to build future partnerships.

I have organized the chapters along four major themes: course partnerships, educational partnerships, business partnerships, and digital divide partnerships. Although these themes, and the related partnerships, are not mutually exclusive, they provide a conceptual framework in which to present these partnerships. For instance, many of the course partnerships involved partnerships with local primary and secondary schools. Some of the business partnerships involve course curricula. Some of the business partnerships involve the educational system-local primary and secondary schools. Some of the course partnerships involve the digital divide. These different types of partnerships should not be viewed as individual solutions; rather, combinations of all of these partnerships should be sought to best meet the needs of the university and the community.

The first chapter, 'Service-Learning Opportunities in the Information Systems Curriculum,' by Jonathan Lazar and Doris Lidtke, provides a background on service-learning courses within the information systems curriculum. Service-learning courses involve students taking part in community service that is structured in a way to build on the classroom curriculum. In this chapter, the advantages and disadvantages of service-learning are discussed, and the infrastructure needed to successfully operate a service-learning class is presented. The major courses in an information systems curriculum are then presented, with corresponding information on how to present the class as a service-learning class, and where possible, examples of how service-learning has been successfully utilized. From personal experience and the published literature, the lessons learned can assist those attempting to implement service-learning in their classes. Finally, important issues that impact on the information systems curriculum, such as cheating and accreditation, are presented in the context of service-learning.

'Active-Learning in Higher Education: A Model and Roadmap, ' by Venkatesh and Small (Chapter 2), continues the discussion on service-learning and other experiential learning processes. The chapter provides an excellent discussion of the educational theories that inspire experiential learning in universities. The authors discuss their experiences with field projects at Syracuse University, including a number of design and networking-related courses. Venkatesh and Small also provide a discussion of the infrastructure at Syracuse University that has allowed their experiential learning programs to flourish.

In Chapter 3, Ruppel and Ruppel describe in detail a service-learning class that has worked with the same community partner for five semesters. In this Systems Analysis and Design class at the University of Toledo, students have helped a small K-8 private school with their computer networking needs. In the different semesters, the student groups assisted with the planning, design, and wiring of the computer network for the school. The students also assisted with grant writing, cost-benefit analyses, and web site development. This chapter provides an interesting view of a service-learning class, because students and faculty worked with the same non-profit organization over five semesters. Ruppel and Ruppel discuss the benefits of this course to both university students and the local school, and present their lessons learned, to be applied in courses that focus on networking or systems analysis and design.

Roberts and Boyle present the partnerships at the University of Leeds, a large university in the United Kingdom, which is surrounded by economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. This chapter, entitled 'University/Community Partnerships: Capstone Projects that Make a Difference,' describes the final-year projects that have benefited the community. All undergraduates are required to take part in capstone projects that last a minimum of 300 hours, and students can choose to do things such as perform research or develop new informational systems. Many of these final-year projects have been structured to assist local schools in meeting their information technology needs. These students have helped local schools with tasks such as infusing information technology into the curriculum, developing summer school programs in technology, organizing student clubs for those interested in technology, and building web sites. These projects have made a positive impact in the local community, and have also generated positive press for the university. Review of Achieving Business Value From Technology (Hardcover)

Achieving Business Value from Technology was an insightful and interesting book to read.It gave a lot of information pertaining to implementation information technology systems.This book is really good for someone who is in the information technology field, or who is looking to gain knowledge and expertise in this area.In particular, I believe this book is good for someone who has a working knowledge of information technology system, but is looking to gain an edge as to the strategies that should be used when implementing this type of system.

I felt that this book is going to be hard to read by someone who has little or no knowledge or experience in the information technology industry.On occasion, this book used large and sophositicated IT jargon that a college student such as myself had a hard time following.However, for someone who already has experience in the IT profession, this would be no problem at all.In particular, I feel this book is great for anyone who works for an enterprise that is considering implementing a new IT system, such as ERP.This book walks the reader through step by step as to how to be most effective in implementing a new system.In particular, the book is also very helpful because it discusses the ways in which an IT investment project should also be measured to determine the successfulness of the project.This book is helpful for those in large and small enterprises alike.It gives suggestions and examples of organziations of all sizes.

Overall, I felt that this book was a great read for anyone interested in implementing a new IT system because it helped set parameters for implementation as well as gave advice to help maximize the value from any IT investment projects.

Review of The Definitive Guide to Business Resumption Planning (Artech House Telecommunications Library) (Hardcover)

This is an informative book, and is reasonably interestinggiven the dry subject.I found it more helpful than the Jon Toigobook.It has an emphasis on telecom recovery and redundancies that was missing from Toigo.The book is weaker on IS recovery, and the author is not really well-acquainted with computer security topics, although he discusses them.In spite of this, the book has an excellent little LAN security policy.

The references to Qmodem and Procomm are hints that although this is a 1997 book, it is based on earlier material.

Wrobel includes a number of helpful checklists and interview guides.His "Sample Operating and Security Standards" in Appendix F is a useful section that could serve as a standard for data center physical security.END

Review of Data Warehousing and Data Mining for Telecommunications (Artech House Computer Science Library) (Hardcover)

Hello Amazon,

The author, who has written extentsively on the subjects of DW and DM is also associated with Sequent Computer Systems, a respected manufacturer and vendor of high-end Enterprise Data Centers, and a highlyexperienced player in the DW, CRM, DSS space.

So, although I wouldn'tdiscourage anyone interested in DW/DM in Telcos to read this book I wouldnot do so with the previso that this is a perspective of data warehousingand data mining in Telecoms, and that there will be a divergence of opinionwith a number of Mr. Mattisons observations, facts and experiences.

Thereis technology bias in most books that touch on the subjects (of Telcos,Data Warehousing and Data Mining), however this is pretty standard, alomostunavoidable and not necessarily undesirable if we take such accounts as oneof a number of perspectives on the subject(s).

Although I didn't find theconenction between DW and KM to be too convincing, or the DW developmentstrategy one that I would concur with, I would say that the attempt toidentify the Telco value chain to be very well articulated.

So yes, ifyou are interested in the subject then go ahead and read it, but don'tforget to put what you get from it in context - with the other diverseopinions on DW/DM and Telecoms - not too mention a lot of dramaticallydiffering opinions regarding Knowledge Management.
