Review of Introduction to Accounting: An Integrated Approach (Hardcover)

Ainsworth & Deines make this topic of accounting relevant with real world examples using Apple Computers actual Financial Statements.Challenging material but very thorough and insightful. Both financial and managerial accounting is discussed throughout the textbook.Highly recommended for academic study.

Product Description
This textbook integrates financial and managerial accounting as opposed to keeping these areas separate, which is done in most books and curriculum. By using the term "integration," the authors focus on the business event and examine that event from both an external financial reporting perspective and an internal management decision-making perspective. The text incorporates real-world applications, including actual financial statements, to reinforce the relevance of topics to real business situations and promote student interest. The text also promotes active learning through "Pause & Reflect" probing questions placed sporadically throughout each chapter, "Of Interest" boxes that provide additional information relating to the chapter concepts, and end-of-chapter group exercises. There are three key distinctions to the Ainsworth/Deines/Plumlee/Larson approach. They are:1. Integration of financial and managerial concepts2. Within the context of business events, ADPL is organized by planning for events; performing those events (in other words, capturing them in the financial statements; and evaluating those business events.3. An organization around the Statement of Cash Flows, first focusing on Operating Activities (what is my business, my product, who are my customers in Volume 1 and then Financing and Investing Activities (how do I fund my business, how do I expand, what are the financial risks, etc. in Volume 2.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review of Customers Rule! Why the E-Commerce Honeymoon is over and where Winning Businesses Go From Here (Hardcover)

The title, though provocative and tantalizing, is accurate.Authors Blackwell and Stephan are unabashed celebrities of the art and science of consumer behavior. It is no surprise whatsoever that the arguments and conclusions in the book are academically sound, intuitively resonant and empirically valid. It is no coincidence, either, that the style is personal, engaging and authoritative without being authoritarian. The resarch shows; practical current examples are used to cut through media hype and Wall Street analysts' obsession with trendy, flashy technology. Jump on the train, they say: the next e-business train leaving the station- all of them will take you to profits and increased market caps. WRONG!The book asks the difficult questions: Does the e-business integrate with the bricks and mortar reality of creating value for the customer? Does it make for a delightful experience? Does it make the customer want to keep coming back again and again? All this is necessary, but not sufficient. Does your e-business strategy create profit? Can this profit stream be sustained? Does it complement your current channels of supply chain management and does it lead you towards trhe new world of demand chain management? Does your strategy differentiate you from your competition? Can you sustain your advantage? The authors are technology savvy, but not mesmerized by it. The book offers insights into what strategies will work and which ones will fail and why.I recommend this book to MBA students everywhere. It is a survival handbook. Business persons will find the book practical and relevant. It will save them a lot of grief. The authors have their feet planted firmly in reality. They remind us: " e-business is no substitute for knowing what works in business and why." I learnt from this book and am giving copies to my colleague business profesors.

Review of Sales Encyclopedia (Hardcover)

Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (11/09)

At first sight of this book I held my breath because of the 708 pages; however, once I started getting into the "meat" of the contents, I realized the value of every page. The authors are upfront in the beginning of the book by stating:If you study this book, master its principles, and apply what you've learned, you will find yourself at the very top of the selling profession...."And, I can't disagree with them.As I explored "Sales Encyclopedia," I realized this is not something I could skim through to get the full effect, but it is a book to read, read again, and implement as I go along in the second reading.

Interestingly enough, Chapin et al start off with distinguishing the difference between success and failure in selling. The reader, and prospective top salesperson, needs to be aware of this difference and the components of each. What one may think is success another may think of it as a failure. However, the authors make it very clear in setting apart the top salespeople from the mediocre and poor ones. But, they also make it very clear on how the mediocre and poor ones become top ones. The first chapter delves right into having a positive attitude - enthusiasm, drive, competitiveness, and confidence. If one doesn't have these characteristics there is no point continuing with a career as a top salesperson or any further in this book.

But, it's not only about attitude.According to the authors, a dedicated salesperson using the techniques set out in "Sales Encyclopedia" will systematically create a navigational structure to not only take themselves, but the company they own or work for far beyond any competitor.

Well written, well defined, and certainly well presented, "Sales Encyclopedia" is a book that can be used for all sales training seminars in companies, as well as mandatory reading for all inspiring salespeople, regardless of industry. Seasoned salespeople will also find confirmation of what they know already, but they will also find inspiration to make changes and look at their career with different eyes. Success only comes with the will to achieve it.Sales success comes with knowing the how and "Sales Encyclopedia" teaches the how.

Review of Fundamentals of Advanced Accounting (Hardcover)

The course topics are very useful for undergraduates and a good introduction to Corporate Finance and Accounting.

However, I would recommend the latter Chapters i.e. 9,10 and 11,12 be placed in other books to allow more emphasis on the earlier chapters. This probably will make the book also good for graduate courses/students especially now with the 150 credit hour accounting programs.

Other than that, its a well developed book!!!

Product Description
Fundamentals of Advanced Accounting, 2/e is ideal for those schools wanting to cover 12 chapters in their advanced accounting course. Typically, this course covers 5-6 consolidations chapters, two foreign currency chapters, two partnership chapters, and 2-3 governmental and not-for-profit chapters. Fundamentals of Advanced Accounting boasts the same great assets that have made the authors' longer Advanced Accounting a success, including the incorporation of the latest FASB pronouncements, the integration of skill preparation for the new CPA exam, and of course, great authorship.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

About the Author
Joe B. Hoyle is Associate Professor of Accounting at the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond, where he teaches Intermediate Accounting I and II and Advanced Accounting. He is currently the David Meade White Distinguished Teaching Fellow. He has been named a Distinguished Educator five times and Professor of the Year on two occasions. He is also author of Fast Track CPA Examination Review and coauthor of The Lakeside Company Case Studies in Auditing.

Thomas F. Schaefer is the KPMG Professor of Accounting at the University of Notre Dame. He has written a number of articles in scholarly journals such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting & Economics, Accounting Horizons, and others. His primary teaching and research interests are in financial accounting and reporting. Review of Modeling Derivatives in C++ (Wiley Finance) (Paperback)

Like some other reviews (some of which have been removed by Amazon) have pointed out, this book is comprehensive, covers most of the right topics yet have some major flaws that prevent it from being truly useful to the students of financial engineering. It successfully COMPILES and DOCUMENTS the derivatives models in C++ but it is less sucessful in TEACHING the process of building these C++ modules. I look forward to a 2nd edition.

The author makes an honest attempt to show the mathematical and financial theories underpining the models and present the associated C++ code. However, the models and the associate codes are presented in a encyclopedia-like fashion. Moreover the codes are 'borrowed' from various sources, including the open source quantlib project, thus there's a lack of consistency. From page to page, you are directed to codes with very different coding styles. Therefore there's disjointed feel to this book.

What I would like to see a its 2nd edition are the following:
1. Relegate the code snippets to the appendix section (or just put them in the CD) and present only the neccesary codes next to the models.
2. Write his own codes or just adopt quantlib's library directly and change the title to Derivatives C++ 2nd edition: a quantlib approach. Consistency in the coding is important.
3. Decide what's the target audience of the book and what is the main object of this book? is it to teach people 'HOW' to map derivatives models to C++, is it to document 'WHAT' derivatives models and the associated C++ codes are out there.

Overall this book is promising, is ambitious in its coverage, but would benefit from a major revision. For its efforts and intentions, I would rate is 3 stars.

An alternative way (IMHO a much better way) to learn Derivatives C++ programming is to take a bottom up approach and learn the various components separately:

Mathematical Finance: Hull (2005, comprehensive coverage of derivatives models); Wilmott/Howison/Dewynne (1995, The mathematics of financial derivatives); Joshi (2005, The Concepts and practice of mathematical finance)

Mapping of mathematical models to computer programs (pseudocodes): Clewlow/Strickland (1998), Lyuu (2001), Seydel (2003)

Programming in C++: any introductory book in C++ would do (I like Deitel & Deitel); Object-oriented C++ and STL

Also need to learn the linear algebra and how to manipulate matrices and system of linear equations in C++.

Product Description
This book is the definitive and most comprehensive guide to modeling derivatives in C++ today. Providing readers with not only the theory and math behind the models, as well as the fundamental concepts of financial engineering, but also actual robust object-oriented C++ code, this is a practical introduction to the most important derivative models used in practice today, including equity (standard and exotics including barrier, lookback, and Asian) and fixed income (bonds, caps, swaptions, swaps, credit) derivatives. The book provides complete C++ implementations for many of the most important derivatives and interest rate pricing models used on Wall Street including Hull-White, BDT, CIR, HJM, and LIBOR Market Model. London illustrates the practical and efficient implementations of these models in real-world situations and discusses the mathematical underpinnings and derivation of the models in a detailed yet accessible manner illustrated by many examples with numerical data as well as real market data. A companion CD contains quantitative libraries, tools, applications, and resources that will be of value to those doing quantitative programming and analysis in C++. Filled with practical advice and helpful tools, Modeling Derivatives in C++ will help readers succeed in understanding and implementing C++ when modeling all types of derivatives.

About the Author
Justin London is the founder and visionary of GlobalMaxTrading.com (GMT), The World's Online Financial Supermarket®, a global online trading and financial technology company, as well as GlobalMaxAuctions.com, The World's Online Trading Exchange ®, a global B2C and B2B auction and trading company. He has analyzed and managed bank corporate loan portfolios using credit derivatives in the Asset Portfolio Management Group of a large bank in Chicago, Illinois. He has developed fixed-income and equity models for trading companies and his own quantitative consulting firm. A graduate of the University of Michigan, London has five degrees, including a BA in economics and mathematics, an MA in applied economics, and an MS in financial engineering, computer science, and mathematics, respectively.

Review of Profits with Principles (Hardcover)

Corporate social responsibility (CSR)-how well businesses behave in the marketplace as citizens and what they contribute, beyond how they actually run their businesses-has been on the corporate agenda for several decades, and served as a proactive way for corporations to demonstrate core `values' beyond the profit incentive. Some companies, such banking institutions, came to table reluctantly, and only after being coerced by the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act, which mandated that banks increase lending broadly in inner-city (and often impoverished) communities where they did business. Other international companies, such as Anita Ruddick's worldwide chain, The Body Shop, took it upon themselves to aggressively do business in a principled, values-defined way.

Not all corporations were so inspired, of course, to do good; and most businesses viewed CSR as being limited to charitable donations and philanthropy, not to a systemic and strategic choice for embracing social values to create core value for stakeholders. In the late 1990s, when American saw their financial wealth increase by $3 trillion a year for the years 1998-2000, at a time when the Dow had rocketed to the11,000 level, stakeholders were less concerned with how well the corporation was doing for society.

But those days are over, at least for the foreseeable future, and businesses now must react to public demands for better governance, transparency, and accountability. They have to do this on their own, building trust from stakeholders, enlarging their reach to fuel economic growth, tapping their `distinctive competencies' to harness innovation for public good, and do so while adding real value (in the form of profits) while they create values, grow stock price, improve employee satisfaction, and enhance their global brands as a fundamental part of doing business.

A new approach for helping corporations to achieve that ambitious task is Profits With Principles: Seven Strategies for Delivering Value With Values, by Ira A. Jackson and Jane Nelson, both fellows at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, a book that uses case studies of companies that have created incremental value for their firms while bringing values into the way they do business.

They also suggest that companies have to react to a crisis in confidence facing business, that while "two-thirds of Americans think that corporations make good products and compete well in the global economy . . . only one-third feel large corporations have ethical business practices." Those attitudes inevitably affect share price and sustainable competitive advantage, issues that reflect directly on company worth, shareholder return, and brand equity. In fact, Jackson and Nelson suggest that intangible assets-the very kind CSR activities help create-contribute significantly to corporate value, with some 50 to 90 percent of value being based on those assets, depending on industries. "They are often spoken about in terms of different types of capital," they say of these intangible assets, "intellectual capital or human capital; social capital or relationship capital; and environmental capital."

To leverage these assets, businesses have to start thinking in a new way about creating long-term profitability and sustained competitive advantage. In fact, corporations have to begin thinking more like entrepreneurs, who exploit opportunities to create a new way of doing business, and who use what is termed "incongruous situations" to drive growth strategies in innovative, revolutionary ways. For businesses, this will mean fostering an intrapreneurial effort from within the organization, using the techniques and vision of entrepreneurs and driving change from inside existing corporate models.
One important prescription being suggested is external innovations corporations can use to create value while effecting positive social change and benefits. Jackson and Nelson's suggestion, for instance,to "spread economic opportunity," shows how companies can have a profound and direct effect on economic and social systems, not only in the immediate communities in which they do business, but also beyond with a national and global reach.

A salient example the authors provide is the case study of how BankBoston achieved a startling resurgence in profitability and influence "consistent with values and a concern for purpose beyond profits." The case study describes how the Bank established a new paradigm by beginning to address serious societal concerns, among them the difficulty experienced by inner-city minority residents of obtaining credit and mortgages. BankBoston proactively answered that need by setting up First Community Bank, a bank-within-a-bank designed to address the specific needs of the once-marginalized, largely-minority population of urban Boston.

What has now become Fleet Community Bank since the 1999 merger of Fleet and BankBoston, Jackson and Nelson note, "has grown to 157 inner-city branches, with 1,500 employees in five states. It has $5 billion in deposits, a $14.6 billion commitment to mortgage and small business lending-one of the largest by any bank-and an innovative inner-city investment bank."And the value created for shareholders by embracing values? BankBoston's share price, which in the early 1990s had been as low as three dollars a share, by the late 1990s climbed to $118 a share and saw a market capitalization exceeding $15 billion.

Another innovative principle, "engage in new alliances," calls for shifts in thinking about social responsibility and the way businesses impact on the communities where they operate. Here the authors suggest a change in the way corporations make philanthropic contributions, so that instead of the "stand-alone, one-way transactions" common to traditional corporate giving, `strategic partnerships' are established between the business and the recipient. These relationships are much more dynamic, sustainable, and beneficial-both for the recipient nonprofits and for the businesses who become their sponsors.

The core belief here is that companies concerned with both profit making and providing social benefits-creating value and values-outperform businesses that focus exclusively on financial gains. That view is supported by other studies which looked at the relationship between the financial and social performance of ninety-five companies. Reviewing the findings of that research, Lynne Sharp Payne, a professor at Harvard Business School, wrote "that only 4 of the 95 studies found a negative relationship between social and financial performance. Fifty-five studies found a positive correlation between better financial performance and better social performance."

No one suggests that transforming corporations into socially-responsible entities is an easy task. But each time a Ken Lay walks into a Federal courthouse to answer for grave corporate misconduct, it is yet another compelling argument why companies that do not embrace a strategy for delivering value with values do so at the risk of losing competitive advantage, brand equity, and a leadership role in the global marketplace.

Internet Marketing for Dummies Internet Marketing for Dummies is a must read book for any small business person new to online marketing. There's a lot of hype about marketing on the Internet, but the book's authors Frank Catalano and Bud Smith - do not hype your expectations. I knew that Internet Marketing for Dummies was not going to be another "let down" when I noticed that the authors included many of the online marketing resources that I frequent on a daily basis! Catalano and Smith begin their book by explaining that "Internet marketing" is "marketing" but using the Internet - and this is very important to understand. So many businesses want to rush into "online marketing", but don't have any clue about how even to market at all. The fundamentals of marketing, apply online as well as off line. Internet Marketing for Dummies walks the user through a fast over view of the Internet - explaining what AOl is, as compared to full access to the Internet. This chapter is very helpful for the many small businesses that are really not so sure what the Internet is all about. Chapter 2 and 3 of Internet Marketing for Dummies realy lays in to the nitty gritty of marketing, with a consentration in chapter two on developing an "Internet Marketing Plan" I was very impressed that the authors of this book took a whole chapter to also discuss and help the reader decide their domain name. Your business name, may indeed be "Faulkner, Grade and Berkmenstein" - however, you may wan to try out "greatlawyers.com" for a domain name! There's a lot of gems in Internet Marketing for Dummies , such as a nice section on effectively using email as a marketing tool. On page 155, chapter 8, Internet Marketing for Dummies lists "techniques for gathering visitor information" on your Web site. See, Internet marketing is more than "just" Internet marketing, but its a blend of leveraging your own Web site, reaching out to others, adveritising on Web sites, building an email list and etc. Internet Marketing for Dummies is one of those books you just keep as a guide on your desk and refer to daily. After you've launched some successful online marketing campaigns you'll be a pro and can then refine what you've learned in Internet Marketing for Dummies.

Review of The Equity Trader Course (Wiley Trading) (Hardcover)

Seat-of-the-pants trading is history.Data from Neonet, an agency broker, show that over 28 percent of trades in U.S. stock markets are the result of automated trading strategies. The Boston-based Tabb Group forecasts 34 percent annual growth in global money managers' use of trading algorithms.

So, in an industry increasingly governed by computerization, algorithmic trading, and fully electronic markets, an appreciation of the theory and operations of equity trading is critically important.A new book from Bruce Weber, Professor of Information Management at London Business School, along with Professor Robert A. Schwartz of Baruch College in New York, and Reto Francioni, CEO of Deutsche Börse, offers a comprehensive course in equity trading for professional and serious independent traders.

The world's equity trading markets are large, complicated, and constantly evolving. In this new book, The Equity Trader Course, Professor Weber and his co-authors manage to give a comprehensive overview of the final, critical step in turning market ideas into realized profits.Even in the richest and deepest markets in the world, liquidity is costly, and hidden trading costs can erode profits.Salient advice in the book covers how to place orders optimally, how to react to volatility, and ways to avoid moving the market when buying or selling.

The book includes insights into trading, liquidity pools, and markets, and tools to apply when using auctions, submitting limit orders, and measuring trader performance. The role of technical analysis and the advantages of algorithmic trading are covered. Each chapter of the book teaches both novice and experienced traders how to be adaptive and successful in their purchasing and selling decisions. The Equity Trader Course comes with a companion CD containing the TraderEx simulation, which walks readers through the dynamics of various market structures, and the mechanics of trading - from entering orders to monitoring the market, and profitably exiting a position.

Review of The Fast Forward MBA in Marketing (Paperback)

Having graduated with a BBA in Marketing, yet having forgot some of the raw fundamentals, I purchased this book. It helped to brushup on some topics, and I also learned a couple of new tidbits. Some of the material is for academic purposes only with little real-world use and is perhaps a little out-dated. Having said that, I still find it a useful reference for terms and marketing stratagies and a good reference and starting point for topics such as a product's life cycle. Elementary and short.

Review of Warehouse Management Handbook (Hardcover)

I recommend this book primarily for the extensive content. At over 900 pages, this book is enormous. Though you may want more detailed information on certain topics, you will at least find some useful information on virtually every topic related to managing a warehouse. The book is actually a collection of chapters written by different authors. Each chapter can be read independently of the others, which makes this a very good reference book.
Because of the multiple authors, there is some redundancy between chapters and inconsistency in the quality of the content.
If you're responsible for managing a warehouse, you should have this book on your bookshelf.

Review of The One Page Business Plan, Financial Services Edition (Paperback)

I was privileged enough to review an advanced copy. What a great book! Jim Horan is getting better. This is his fourth book in the series and I believe the best one. It differs from his other books, spending more time on evaluating your present practice through a self-assessment section. It also includes a "sage-advice" section from other financial planners. Both were valued additions. The last book, One Page Business Plan for Non-Profits had 117 pages. This one has 100 pages. At first, I felt it was short sample plans, therefore lacking in content. However, in true "Horan" fashion, he has forced you to write your plan, not copy others. His accompanying CD has several great tools for you to use and of course, The One Business Plan template. The highest compliment I can give though is that this book makes YOU write the plan.

Product Description
This edition of the One Page Business Plan Series, The One Page Business Plan - Financial Services Edition, is specifically tailored to professionals in insurance, investment and related industries. Includes tools, templates and examples both in the book and on CD. Easy to complete assessments let you easily learn what's working in your business and what's not!

Review of The Certified Manager of Quality/organizational Excellence Handbook (Hardcover)

I bought the Handbook for a class 2 months before taking the ASQ CMQ/OE exam. This was not enough time to digest this book.I wish I'd been handed this book (or an earlier version) when I started in quality and been told to READ IT! Over the past 10 years I've heard all sorts of topics found here, like what a quality manager is supposed to do, different techniques, etc. They're all here with references on where to go for more information.Ever needed a perfect explanation for a qualtiy topic? It's in there! This is a must for the quality professional's bookshelf! But just don't leave it there on the shelf, READ IT and USE IT!

Product Description
The title of the ASQ certification changed to Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence to reflect the fact that the role of the quality function is continually evolving. Many of the responsibilities for the management of quality are being deployed throughout the organization into other functions. This now requires a much more comprehensive understanding of an organization as a system within the larger system of society. The range of tools and technologies that quality professionals are required to use and/or facilitate is also increasing. The ability to read, interpret, and use financial tools, as well as use the language of cost/profitability when talking to senior management, is more important than ever for quality professionals. In addition to being a peerless reference on quality management, The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence Handbook is the most comprehensive preparatory guide for the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence Exam. The handbook is completely updated to reflect the changes in the 2006 Body of Knowledge (BoK), and the pertinent BoK requirements associated with good quality management practices are shown throughout each section. These BoK requirements represent the range of content and the cognitive level to which multiple choice questions can be presented.Included in appendices are the newly updated Body of Knowledge, an extensive glossary of terms, a list of additional references for further study, and (on an accompanying CD-ROM) sample questions similar to those on the actual exam.

About the Author
Russell T. Westcott is president of R.T. Westcott & Associates, where he guides clients in implementing ISO 9001 quality management systems, applying for Baldrige-type awards, strategic planning, project management, and initiating lean practices. Review of The Law of Tax-Exempt Organizations, 2009 Cumulative Supplement (Paperback)

The nonprofit sector is a huge part of the American economy. Nonprofits range from multinationals to your local little league. While, technically, the same body of tax laws applies to all of them, the level of sophistication varies as dramatically as the size of the nonprofit. And while the big nonprofits can afford to buy expertise, smaller nonprofits have to manage more of the tasks themselves. This book can help.

Hopkins' book is an excellent reference for attorneys and accounts and nonprofit executives with some knowledge of nonprofit tax laws work. It's not likely to be useful to and it's not written for the average volunteer. This is a fairly technical resource, and while nonprofit tax law gets a lot more complicated than Hopkins, this is a very good middle-level resource.

If I have any criticism of Hopkins it's this: in recent editions he has removed important subjects from this reference and spun them off into separate books at equally high prices. Most of the treatment of charitable donations, for example, is now in a different book. Private foundations are now in a different book. Excess benefits transactions are in a different book. You can spend a ton of money on Professor Hopkins. It costs him one star in my rating.

Even so, as a basic entry point, this book is indispensable. I've attended seminars by Prof. Hopkins and read most his books, and he is very knowledgeable and does a good job at the difficult task of translating IRS-speak into comprehensible language. This book should be a part of every nonprofit lawyer and accountant's library.

Product Description
Nonprofit organizations are subject to a complex set of regulations and laws. Written in plain English, this book keeps tax-exempt organizations up-to-date on all current regulations pertaining to tax-exempt organizations. It ensures professionals are well-prepared to make decisions about their organizations? actions and future. It is a definitive one-volume source of information on federal laws by the leading legal authority in the nonprofit sector. This guide is supplemented annually to keep the lawyers and managers of nonprofit organizations on top of the latest nonprofit legal and tax developments.

About the Author
Bruce R.Hopkins is the country's leading authority on tax-exempt organizations and is a lawyer with the firm Polsinelli, Shalton, Welte, P.C. He is also the author of nineteen books, including The Legal Answer Book for Private Foundations, The Legal Answer Book for Nonprofit Organizations; The Law of Tax-Exempt Organizations, 8E; Private Foundations: Tax Law and Compliance, 2E; A Legal Guide to Starting and Managing a Nonprofit Organization, 4E; and The Tax Law of Charitable Giving, 3E, as well as the newsletter Bruce Hopkins' Nonprofit Counsel, all published by Wiley.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
