Review of PHP Fast & Easy Web Development, 2nd Edition [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

This book is a very good starting point for anyone who wishes to begin programming in PHP.

I picked this book up in hopes of getting somewhat of a grasp of PHP. The book was very successful in presenting appropriate concepts for beginners such as: varibables, arrays and operators. The book also had a few chapters on using MySQL, which is very helpful for anyone who wishes to create full-blown web applications such as shopping carts, forums and news services on their websites.

However, the book was somewhat vague in the amount of content presented. The book is like a giant PHP coding tutorial, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you're not a beginner. For a complete introduction to PHP/MySQL I would suggest buying this book AND PHP/MySQL Web Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thompson. With these two books, a beginner will be on the right path down the complicated road of online applications.

Review of XML Web Services Professional Projects (Paperback)

This book has some good information, but it tries to cover too much.It covers web services created in .NET, Java, and even Perl. Most of the book is related to .NET though.

It is funny that in the intro the authors say they assume you already know XML, but then the first chapter is an intro to XML.Actually, that's one of the reasons I bought the book though.I didn't want to buy a separate XML book.

The other reason I bought the book is that it was on the bargain rack.I wouldn't have paid full price since I am not interested in .NET.

Product Description
Microsoft's .NET Framework acts as a platform for building XML Web services, reusable components that can be shared across multiple Web sites. XML Web Services Professional Projects provides you with information on the basics and intricacies of Web services. It offers coverage of topics such as the SOAP protocol, deploying and publishing XML Web services, and Web service description language. It includes real-world projects and outlines the need for Web services in the upcoming mobile technology and Internet scenario. Case studies help you relate the concepts in the book to situations in your own work environment. Designed for Web developers and IT professionals, this book assumes you are proficient in Internet technologies.

First off, this book is very well written. He has accomplished the difficult; making a computer book that's enjoyable to read.If I were new to eBay or to the online auction arena, I can see where this would help me.Dennis explains the entire process from A to Z.

Now for the downside.Isell daily at eBay, and I was hoping to gain a little more in depthinformation, ie. best times to post, credit cards, taxes, listingstrategies, handling deadbeat bidders, etc.Based on the earlier reviews, this book was supposed to be beneficial to even the most advanced of eBayusers.I did not find that to be the case.

All in all the book wasworth the money. If you are new to eBay, then this is a MUST HAVE.I willhand it off to my father, as he is new to eBay and this should be right uphis alley.

Review of Lotus Notes R 6 Professional Projects [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

Nothing wrong with the book. It just didn't have what I was hoping for in it. Typical software tutorial restating the help info with a new example here and there. It may have been great when it was written in 2003. We still use 6.5 at work.

I bought it used. Seller's description was accurate. Good condition and shipped on time.

Review of Beginning Direct3D Game Programming, Second Edition (Paperback)

I've been waiting a long time for a book like this. I'm a Unix software developer by profession, but only a hobbyist when it comes to PC game programming. Back in the good old days, before Windows and DirectX/DirectWhatever, it was possible for us casual programmers to keep up with the technology and have fun experimenting with graphics and game programming. I simply lost interest when the complexity of the operating system and video hardware started getting in the way.
I've been searching for a good book on Direct3D graphics programming for years and finally found one that delivers what it promises. Wolfgang Engel, the author, obviously understands how frustrating the learning process can be. The content of this book is masterfully structured to give the reader a solid understanding of everything you need to know. It's friendly, informal, humorous, and focused. It's a big book, but it reads fast, and keeps you interested.
The author assumes you know C and maybe a little C++. That's about the only prerequisite you'll need to understand the material

Product Description
With a detailed explanation of vertex and pixel shader programming, coverage of the new Microsoft HLSL (High Level Shader Language), and greater concentration of the fixed function pipeline, the second edition of this popular reference guide will take you farther than you ever imagined! Written by an industry expert, this book will put an end to your struggle to master the concepts. "Beginning Direct3D Game Programming, 2nd Edition" serves as a comprehensive guide for learning DirectX graphics programming. It allows you to start with the basics and ease your way into graphics and animation. As you work your way through the book, however, you'll get a chance to focus on some advanced shader effects to give your games that extra touch of realism.

Review of PostgreSQL (Linux) (Paperback)

My expectations might have been set better if the title was something like "Special Edition Teach Yourself Relational Databases Using PostgreSQL in 24 Hours For Dummies".

I think this book is extremely thin on useful relevant content, although not completely without value; nevertheless, the books "PostgreSQL Essential Reference" and "Begininning Databases with PostgreSQL" are available now, and in my opinion they are vastly more useful than this book.

NB: "Practical PostgreSQL" is not out yet as I write this review.

Product Description
This book is perfect for people who use PostgreSQL at work and on their Web site wherever they expose data on the Web using Linux and Apache. It covers the new features of PostgreSQL as well as the PostgreSQL processor, which defines all necessary objects in a database and can be used to get acquainted with SQL and to test ideas and verify joins and queries.

Review of HomeSite 4.5 Fast & Easy Web Development (Paperback)

I'm not completely through this book yet. I like the format and the step-by-step approach with lots of boxes for special notes and cautions. There are a few typos (as mentioned in previous reviews) but, in my opinion, they are minor and did not distract from the subject material.

I am writing this reveiw now because: 1) the www.prima-tech.com site is not working and 2) I wanted to tell readers how to get past a difficulty that I had on page 84.

You need to know the IP address of your PC in order to utilize Personal Web Server while testing your work. There may be other methods, but I did the following: 1) open a MS-DOS window and 2) type "ipconfig" at the c:\windows>" prompt. You can then use this address within your browser (connected or not) to test your work. The author assumed that I already knew how to get and use my IP address. He should include a box on page 84 to explain how to do this for each operating system covered in the book.

Review of PHP/MySQL Programming for the Absolute Beginner (Paperback)

While, of course, focusing on the aspects of PHP and MySQL programming, the first few chapters of the book also make sure to teach the fundamentals of all programming - scope of variables, arrays, the different options for loops, etc. This was extremely helpful to me.With the in-depth example programs and the useful "Challenges" at the end of each chapter, I was programming in PHP from day one.The only problem I had is that he doesn't cover the configuration of PHP much at all, and the example programs on the CD require a certain configuration of PHP that is not standard with installations - so, I had to alter his code in order to see it work on MY computer.

Product Description
If you are new to programming with PHP and MySQL and arelooking for a solid introduction, this is the book for you. Review of Learn HTML In a Weekend, 3rd Edition W/CD (Paperback)

This is the better of Mr. Callihan's two HTML books. The other, Create Your First Webpage (In a Weekend) is quickly outgrown by even novice users. Mr. Callihan's talent is the ability to speak to non-technical people abouta technical subject, and make sense! This book covers much of the samematerial as his "Create...Webpage" book, but goes into frames. With this book, you can definately put up a webpage to be proud of.

Myonly complaint would be that I would have liked more information on tables, frames, and forms from a coding point of view. His frames and forms aretaught using a software code generator.Otherwise, I was quite happy withthe product.

Skip the other book and go straight to this one!

Product Description

Review of Inspired 3D Character Animation (Paperback)

I'm a bit surprised at the bad rap this book has gotten in earlier user reviews.Suggesting to "just read the manual that came with the software" is preposterous -- these comments are often made by people who think that knowing how to set keyframes in a piece of software makes them GOOD animators, and nothing could be further from the truth.A thorough understanding of how the body moves, how the mind thinks, how external forces affect the body, and other sometimes slippery subjects are critical aspects of the good animator's toolset.

While there are no earth-shattering revelations in this book (how many could there be when the animation industry is over 90 years old), the topics discussed in these pages, often illustrated with short exercises, make a good launching pad for people wanting to go from someone who knows how to make a character move, to someone who knows how to make a character come alive.

The book does a good job of relating traditional animation concepts to the 3D medium, and several of the interviews are enlightening. As a college animation instructor and professional computer animator, I find satisfaction in opening this book in my classroom to point out that artists from celebrated studios such as Industrial Light & Magic and Sony Pictures Imageworks are saying the same things that I am telling my students. My Advanced 3D Animation students spend several weeks reading chapters from this book and applying the information through mini-assignments, which I hope lead them to realize all that they must consider in bringing a character to life. This book is not designed to teach something new to the computer animation veteran -- instead, it fulfills its purpose of showing intermediate to advanced level students of animation a path that they need to take in becoming successful character animators.

While the price of this book is a bit steep, there are several pieces of advice that should be in any character animator's mantra. The information can lead to a big payoff if you really absorb it.

Product Description
The art of creating animation is the ability to generate believable characters that have emotion and life. Regardless of your medium good animation comes from the application of solid fundamentals and an extensive body of knowledge. Inspired 3D Character Animation provides you with a comprehensive set of processes and procedures to animating characters in the digital environment. By taking a close look at the day to day activities and practices of veteran film, commercial, and game animators, readers are provided with a look into the processes necessary to implement these ideas into the world of 3D computer graphics software.

Review of ALE, EDI, & IDoc Technologies for SAP, 2nd Edition (Prima Tech's SAP Book Series) (Hardcover)

I've read both the Arvind Nagpal and Rajeev Kasturi books, and I conclude that the Nagpal book is much better for me, a person who has been doing SAP EDI for several years.

I do not know either of these authors.I do not have anything to do with the publishers.I bet this is more than many ofthe reviewers here can say!

I know that sheer bulk is not what we arebuying here, but let's do some numbers to examine one aspect of thecomparison. The Kasturi book starts with 388 pages.Well over 100 pages inthe back are tables out of SAP that we can print any time we want (or savea tree and just pull up a screen).Since I've worked with SAP EDI for afew years, I didn't expect a lot of things to be new to me in the first 3or 4 chapters, but man, there was nothing even moderatly interesting to mein the early part of the book. That left about 150 pages in the middlethat, I'll admit, I only skimmed. But the per-page cost of those fewpossibly valuable pages is quite high! There was a strong ALE / exampleflavor to the book.As if someone wrote about a few of their favoriteimplementations.

Now, the Nagpal book starts with quite a few more pages(786).There is NOT a huge section of this book dedicated to stuff I couldprint out of or look up in SAP.Yes, some of this stuff is 'light' too. And again, I'll admit to skimming a lot of it that I didn't have a pressingneed to know right now.And yes, there are quite a few print-screens inthe book (but I LIKE print-screens).The bottom line is that I, a personwho's been using SAP-EDI quite a while, found the Nagpal title MOREINTERESTING, INFORMATIVE,and found it had MORE INFORMATION than theKasturi book.

Review of Photoshop 6 for Mac Fast & Easy (Fast & Easy) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I recently acquired Photoshop 6 and Dreamweaver with the intention of building my first commercial web site.I have done some design before, and am very experienced in music editing and other software programs.I initially bought the Classroom in a Book series by Adobe and was having trouble following their lines of thinking. This book, although not as comprehensive as the Adobe, is by far better organized and presented. Not only does it follow in a logical order for someone new to the Photoshop environment, it also gives you large pictures with pointers detailing every step of the process.I am in 2 days, far more comfortable on Photoshop than I was with 4 days and the Adobe book. This book is definitely for beginners, and I am sure you will want an additional book or two to fill in the more complex processes that are available. For the price it can't be beat.

Review of Mac Game Programming (Premier Press Game Development Series) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

Since I contributed to this book, I shouldn't rate it. However, I would like to encourage Mac developers to purchase the book to garner further interest from publishers to release more Mac specific programming books. In addition, I would like to inform readers that an error exists in the Project Builder version of the source code that comes with the book. If you load any of the project files on the CD-ROM and try to compile them, the build will fail. This is because the file InfoPlist.strings is not on the CD-ROM with the source code files. Fortunately, the author has a small download to fix the problem. Visit his site for instructions...

Review of Special Effects Game Programming with DirectX w/CD (The Premier Press Game Development Series) (Paperback)

I've been looking forward to this book for a long time now. I've attended several industry conferences with the author, and he's written numerous articles for our website, so I know him to be both an excellent game programmer and talented writer. I had high expectations for this book, and I'm happy to report that it not only lives up to them, it exceeds them.

This book does two things very well: it provides first-rate coverage of DirectX, and it provides the most extensive coverage of special effects ever put in to a game programming book. I'm going to review each of these aspects of the book separately.
The first half of this book is dedicated to covering the basics of Windows programming, 3D math, and DirectX, and it makes the assumption that you're new to all of these areas. He covers all components of the DirectX API, including DirectAudio, DirectInput, DirectPlay, DirectShow, and of course, DirectGraphics (aka Direct3D), which is where the book really shines. Before this book, I had not encountered a single Direct3D book which I could recommend without reservation. He dedicates 5 hefty chapters to DirectGraphics, including two on texture mapping and one on pixel and vertex shaders (and that doesn't count the second half of the book which provides plenty of examples and advanced techniques). Simply put, this is without question the best book currently on the market from which to learn DirectX, and for that reason alone, it's earned a place at the top of my recommendations list.

Note that even if you aren't new to DirectX, you'll probably find a lot of useful things in the first half of the book which are generally omitted from or glossed over in (most) other books, such as action mapping, DirectShow, and DirectPlay. Even the 3D math section has something to offer, with the most concise and accessible explanation of quaternions that I've come across.

The special effects section of the book is divided into two parts. The first covers 2D effects, including fire, water, image feedback, image warping, clouds, blurs, and transitions. Before you complain about 2D being a thing of the past, note that these effects are intended for use in title screens, or for generating textures to be used in 3D worlds. The second part is, of course, 3D effects, and includes particle systems, explosions, 3D water, guns and projectiles, lens flares, and vertex and pixel shader effects. All of these are presented quite well, but the particle system coverage deserves special mention. It spans almost 100, and takes you all the way from a basic system to a powerful, flexible system controlled through scripts.

Each special effect is accompanied by at least one demo program, which is thoroughly explained in the book. The only downside to this is that the author was only able to focus on a single algorithm for each effect, but he at least mentions some of the alternative approaches, as well as suggestions for improving the techniques he presents. Overall, any game programmer should be able to benefit from the special effects portion of the book, even if you've done some of these things before.

My only real complaint about this book is that it should have been two books. Experienced game programmers will probably find a lot they can use in the special effects portion of the book, but may find the DirectX portion unnecessary. Beginning programmers will definitely benefit from the DirectX portion, but may want to spend some time working on basic game techniques before diving into the special effects portion. But, it's not two books, and as a single volume, it's still worth the price. Also, you should be aware that some of the effects covered in this book require a newer video card to even be able to run the demo program. To get the most out of the book, you'll need a card that at least supports vertex shaders, and preferably pixel shaders as well. Also, if you're not pretty comfortable with C++, you may find yourself struggling with some of the code.

Overall, this book is extremely well-written and easy to read. There's so much that this book has to offer that is difficult, if not impossible, to find elsewhere, I strongly recommend it as a must-have for anyone interested in game programming.

Review of Palm OS Game Programming (Premier Press Game Development Series) (Paperback)

I should have believed the two readers who rated this book with
2 stars. I'm not sure if they found the same errors that I have
found below but I don't think my debug-ROMs on POSE with all
debug options turned on lied to me.

I bought the book based on its Table of Contents. What a fool
I've been!

I tested the first example Chapter3.prc and it gave the
following error after I tapped any of the launchers :

"Found 3 memory leaks for Chapter3(unknown version) Information

concering the leaks can be found in the log file."

Chapter4.prc ran ok.

Chapter6.prc's animated sheep application ran but again when I
tap any of the application launchers:

"Found 12 memory leaks for Chapter6(unknown version). Information
concerning the leaks can be found in the log file."

Chapter7.prc = "Found 31 memory leaks..."

Chapter8.prc ran but provided no way out. Tapping or pressing
the application launcher and hard buttons can't exit the program.

Chapter9's Elastic.prc & Inelastic.prc = "Found 13 memory leaks..."

Chapter10.prc = "Found 19 memory leaks..."

Chapter12.prc = "Chapter12(unknown version) called SysFatalAlert
with the message "DataMgr.c, Line 3362, Null dbID passed".

The book is hypocrital in the sense that it says to turn ON ALL
debugging options and yet I feel the author turned his OFF when
he developed the applications in the book.

Plus the makefile doesn't work using GCC! I assume the makefile
is specific to one of the proprietary tools he used.

I'll still read this book for the theory but I will definitely
write my own game engine. I can't trust his engine.

Next time, I won't buy books with reviews/ratings split two
ways. I wish I could return this book but I can't since
returning it to Amazon will be a costly excercise on my part.

Product Description

You see a device ready to be programmed with an array of exciting games. This book shows you how you can accomplish just that. Beginning with a detailed discusion of how the OS works, you will soon be writing your own programs as you learn about loading and drawing bitmaps, physics, Artificial Intelligence, and many advanced concepts of Palm OS programming. Before beginning, you will need to have a working knowledge of C and C++ as well as some experience using a Palm device, although experience programming a Palm is not required. As you progress though the book, you will develop a game framework that you can use as you create your own games in the future.

Review of Focus On Photon Mapping (Game Development) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I've implemented photon mapping myself in the past, and this book presents one of the worst attempts at "searching in the dark" (pun intended) I've ever seen. The author obviously does NOT understand photon mapping, neither the concepts behind it or nor its proper usage.Even the "sample images" presented lack the quality and correctness of a proper implementation. The author presents ludicrous methods of "improving performance," by reducing the number of photons (which only increases error), and calculating light only at vertices (whats the point of emitting photons at all then?).

Photon mapping is a technique for generating realistic lighting phenomenon, such as diffuse effects, caustics, and soft shadows, efficiently. This book teaches methods that are not only incorrect, but no better than standard, low quality lighting techniques.People who are serious about implementing photon mapping should invest their money in a book that actually teaches the background and methods necessary to understand the technique, not one that blindly tries to pass off sub-standard results as the product of a realistic method.

Product Description
Game developers, now create real-world lighting simulation in your games! This Focus On book isolates the topic of photon mapping, explaining its practical use in C and C++ languages. You will build your existing knowledge with the hands-on approach to implementing this algorithm and applying it to games and graphics applications. Focus On Photon Mapping includes a basic overview on the physics of light to help you visualize and understand how light works before moving on to implementing the simulated lighting techniques.

Review of Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Professional Projects (Paperback)

Be sure that there is nothing professional about this book. It is certainly one of the worst out there. The applications you build in the book are based on code of the lowest quality. Nothing object oriented here. It has nothing to offer to the intermediate user and above and will introduce the beginner to some very bad programming habbits.

Don't be fooled that it 'll let you build a full video kiosk application. The intermediate could do with no effort and the beginner won't understand what and why, simply because it just throws totally basic code and explains nothing. Not even the SQL.

Then half of the content is of (the much ridiculus) style: "Now that we learned this, let's go and learn this"(end of section), next section: "in the previous section we learnd this, now let's go and learn this", or,"figure X shows ..." (figure) "as shown in figure X...". Irritating the least. I just adopts a "tell it to a ten years old" manner but actually says nothing usefull.

Bottom line: just don't buy.

Review of Managing with Microsoft Project 2002 (Miscellaneous) (Paperback)

I have a development background but I found this book hard going. It was a little bit like being given a map and some directions but never being able to reach your destination - there was always something lacking or paragraphs went off at a tangent.I found that there was little logical structurein this book. I had to look for things in the later chapters before everything made sense in the earlier ones. I can't say I will be using this one as a reference. I think there are better ones around.
